Or maybe I skipped something. Because I feel completely unprepared to take on the fights I've been thrown in so early in the game. I mean this is edging on not being fun, I'm getting killed by random encounters. I got the feeling that being a mage made it harder but even the rogue I rolled had a hard time through the opening.

Well I suppose that's better then it being "too soft".

I get the feeling that easy would be too easy.

And while I'm complaining, the inventory is too small.

Well... just try it. If it IS too easy then bump it back.

And you're right. The inventory limit makes me want to scream. Thank **** for the chest that comes with Warden's Keep!

Well turn it up to nightmare and become a beefcake!

To be honest I found that made was the easiest class to play, just give them heal, maybe even regeneration, and go easy on mana so you can stop people dying, other classes seem to have to make do with poultices until at least level 7 which is a pain.

I felt the game gets easier as you play more and level up. The earlier levels are always hardest. Now I feel like my warrior can solo anything without requiring heals.

hm.. that would be my answer when actually talking to someone, no doubt. not very helpful when aiming to take the wind out of somebodies sails and keep it short though ;)

Couple of points:

1) Easy is fairly easy; I used it on my first play through and I found some fights challenging although taht was mainly because I had no idea how to spec and gear my characters.

2) Normal is a good setting, although it is also easy. If you are playing on Hard/Nightmare and finding it too hard then I have nothing for you.

3) The inventory sucks; you can spend cash on backpacks or you can cheat  like me and get the mod that sets it to the maximum inventory limit. The first backpack is available from the Ostagar quartermaster.

Hard is the best setting, IMO. Friendly fire should do the same amount of damage as it would to your enemies.

TC, just work on your tactics, use pause a lot, and push on through until you get some more levels, which gives you more flexibility, especially as a mage. Give yourself Heal and try to get spells that have some aspect of Crowd Control in their effects, such as Cone of Cold, or Glyph of Paralysis. Consider getting the Respec mod, which lets you respec your NPC squadmates to your specifications (for example, it lets you work towards giving Alistair Shield Wall instead of that crappy anti-arrow sustainable ability).

The game was damn hard for me too when i first started playing, but now i feel even hard is too easy, i often find myself checking if the difficulty really is hard after killing a bunch of enemies effortlesly. Just keep at it, you'll get the hang of it sooner or later.

Have a tank, Alistair will do, that is supposed to take the most beating, get healing spells, or a dedicated healer who keeps him up and taking a beating, while other party members do the damage. Threathen and Taunt to keep the enemies interested in him, and shield wall to increase his durability.

Also, the tactics help a lot. You need to understand the abilities, and at what situations it's best to use them, to set them efficiently, but if you ignore them completely your non-controlled party members aren't of much use.

If anything, I would suggest you at least keep a proper party. I would say have yourself (don't know your class), Alistair (only if your not a shield warrior), Morrigan, and Wynne. Having two mages always puts you at an advantage since they are overpowered. At the beginning, though, it is a bit difficult because you don't get the crowd control that mages can offer. I would say keep a lot of poultices which Morrigan can make for cheap.

I actually think nightmare is the proper difficulty for the game. I mean the enemies resist a lot of spells, and you get that whole friendly fire damage.

I struggled with the small inventory for almost half the game, and then I had the bright idea of googling "dragon age origins inventory expanded mod".

Might want to try that, if you're feeling frustrated by inventory management... ^_^

As for me, I've found the "normal" difficulty providing just the right level of challenge for my first playthough. I don't think crpgs should be so easy that just rushing in head long to every encounter wouldn't often result in getting your ass handed to you.

For difficult battles, if there are many enemies, you might want to tell your party to hold position behind some corner, then goad the enemy to follow you into the ambush... that's a good way of breaking up very large groups of enemies too, as you can often get only a portion of the enemy to follow, kill them off, and THEN rush in to finish the rest.

Since this was my first single player RPG (coming from Age of Conan, my first RPG ever), I did my first playthrough on "easy" so combat wouldn't get in the way of enjoying the story (my primary interest in a game like this). But I still found it fairly challenging, given that I'd never tried a combat system like this before.

However, at a certain point towards the end of the game, everything got a lot easier and I could literally kill regular darkspawn mobs in one strike. And I was kind of disappointed... Even the bosses melted away in front of me, and I no longer had to worry much about tactics.

So my question is: was I the victim of a bug that turned all mobs into wimps, or had I actually been playing the game at a harder difficulty up to that point, even though my settings said "Easy"? How easy is "Easy" really supposed to be? I always found that I had to pause a lot and plan tactics, or my guys and gals would just get reduced to a pulp in a matter of seconds. I assumed I was just an amateur, and certainly not the "tactical genius" the "Nightmare" setting claims to require ;)

I'm also pretty sure that my mage's Cone of Cold froze my tank on more than one occasion, so friendly fire was definitely an issue... So maybe the game's difficulty isn't always what it claims to be on the settings screen?

I started up a new guy last night, and will try "Hard" this time. I haven't been in any fights yet, but I'm very curious about the difficulty this time. Should be fun! I definitely had a blast playing this game the first time, and love it :)

LOL
You can hold what, 70 items initially regardless of weight, AND within that limit you can hold multiples of the same item. What's wrong with that?
It means you get to some points where you have plan what you pick up, what you destroy, and what you return for. So you have to think.
Maybe that's what you don't like. :P ;)

Here is how I mastered the game:

First run: Normal, Elf Mage. I died 999999999 times and cried myself to sleep every night, but in the end I made it through.

Second Run: Hard, Dwarf Warrior: By now I knew the game and it was much easier, I almost felt like it was too easy.

Edit: Bad English

Third run: Nightmare, Elven Rouge: It was the quickest and easiest rungthrough of them all.

All you need is to brace yourself with patience, never change to easy the difficulty and expect to die at every random encounter at least once. Eventually it will get easier by themselves.

You won't take any damage, but the effects will still affect your party.

Hm... It does incapacitate my tank, though, but ok ;)

I have not confirmed this, but I also believe that acid flasks and bombs damaged my characters. I certainly felt like I needed to be careful with my AoE damage.
