So I was playing through Mass Effect 2 for the 4th time earlier today and it struck me.

Wow, this is a really really great game.

I'm blown away by the production values, the story, the character development(Thane has got to be one of my all time favorite characters), and inredibly fun gameplay.

Mass Effect 2 kinda reminds me of the feeling I had when resident evil 4 came out in early 2005.  I was so blown away by that time that I pretty much declared it game of the year already even though it came out in January.

So, with that said, do you guys think that Mass Effect 2 will be the game of the year?  What other games coming out do you think could be competitive?

I've already written off Final Fantasy XIII.  Sure it's gotten some good reviews but the reception of it has been pretty mixed and for good reason.  It's linear, melodramtic, and the narrative flat out sucks.  Sure that is subjective but there are enough people out there who agree with me to make Final Fantasy XIII's chances of being GOTY pretty slim.

I'm really really looking forward to Deus Ex 3.  Deus Ex is my favorite game of all time and the fact that the development team behind Deus Ex 3 has stated that they're using the first game as a model for Deus Ex 3(larger levels, skill system, more RPG elements etc) is very good news.

Also, Fallout New Vegas looks pretty cool as does Alpha Protocol.

Nope, people will forget about it because it was a January release. Most likely it will be my game of the year unless the next Zelda is really good or Reach exceeds expectations.

I hope it does, and I think it has a really good chance of being GOTY too, with the games released so far. But it might have some competition with Bad Company 2. Oh, and if Starcraft 2 ever gets released in 2010...ouch.

It's the best game I've played so far this year, but 2010 isn't over yet so I cannot really make a decision since half its competition hasn't been released yet.

On a serious note, I'm putting my money on Starcraft 2 as game of the year, Although ME 2 comes real close in my heart. Battlefield Bad company? It's addictive, yes... But Game of the year material? It's buggy as ****...


COD MW2? Maybe... but I doubt it.

I think Blizzard...err I mean Activision's decision to sell the game's three campaigns individually at 60 dollars a piece or 100 dollars for the collector's edition may backfire on them.

They do seem though to make it a whole full complete game with a lot of support. I have faith that they are going to make a good game.

Blizzard has A VERY good track record for this. Hell, they are still supporting Warcraft 3.

Starcraft is one of the best games of all time.

Starcraft 2 is going to have trouble stacking up .. but if it does, hell yes it will pwn everything.

Huh... Yea that... Both statements...

Might have to take a look at the new splinter cell, might be surprising, no off the roof reviews, but nothing much bad either... Might be a contender if quality is lacking in other games... Might not beat ME 2 though, still... Looking forward...

I think we can safely write off Splinter Cell Conviction as a contender. It's a decent game but it's campaign is only 5-7 hours long.

Regardless of how good Blizzard's support is for their old games, I think that releasing the game in three different packages at 60 dollars each is just poor for consumer relations and I think it will hurt the game's reviews.
Considering how long Blizzard's development cycles are. We may not even get to see all of Starcraft 2 until 2015 or longer.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be great but it looks like more of the same.

It's a contender. Still too early to say. As far as a game with a great story where you make all the decisions for the characters another original title Heavy Rain is also a strong contender. GOW3 might get a nod, but I rented it and its really over-rated. Mass Effect 2 will almost certainly be the best Xbox 360 game released this year. Unfortunately for PC owners, ME2 has to contend with Starcraft II, which is the sequel to the best selling game of all time. So I'd say best game on 360 this year.
