There's so many ways to play engineer.
My favourite build order goes:
Overload 2
Incinerate 1-4 (Incineration Blast)
Passive 1-3
Then it should be after Horizon (or close to it), and retrain frequently to take advantage of engineer versatility.

Overload 4 (area)
Incinerate 4 (area)
Mastery 4 (mechanic)
Drone 4 (explosive)
plus
Cryoblast 2
AI hacking 1
Dominate 1
leftovers go anywhere.
First get at least a point in everything (although you can delay AI hacking for a while if you want), then the priority is mastery=incinerate>drone>overload.

My engineer build is like the pervious, only i tend to go more for the heavy skills instead of area effect
As previous poster said, start with a point in everything to get the feel of the skills. From there tweak and customise according to gamplay style.

I also find myself being extra careful with which squadmates I choose for optimal performance.
I think Average Gatsby outlines some of his builds in his "engineering the asylum" vids.

Yep, AI hacking works on mechs, as long as they are down to health. Use it when fighting groups of synthetics to make them fight amongst themselves instead of targeting you.masseffectfan00 wrote...
does ai hacking work on mechs? also isnt attack drone better? and what is the best armor to wear
Attack drone can be better when drones tend to live a fair while, explosive drone is better when the drone dies very quickly. Usually you want to target the drone on the most threatening enemy, though, so I think explosive drone is the better choice.
For armor, I like a visor, capacitator chestplate, amplifier plates, stabilization gauntlets and life support webbings. Blood dragon armor is good too.

Overload 6
Incinerate 6
Attack Drone 10
Cryo Blast 3
AI Hacking 6
Demolisher 10 (<-- Demolisher is called Operative before you select it)
Enhanced Dominate 10
This build is more of a crowd-control master. It's primary strategy is to throw out a drone on one enemy, strip the defences of a separate enemy quickly, throw out a drone again if needed on the first opponent, and then employ either Dominate or AI Hack to control the stripped enemy. Controlled enemy now attacks and draws fire, and then you're pretty much free to stand in the open firing on opponents as they're all busy amongst themselves, and keep using the drone on anyone who's firing at you, and throwing out Overload/Incinerate/Cryo as the opportunity arises, and keep refreshing AI Hack/Dominate as needed.
Pick up the Viper Sniper rifle and sniper rifle training on the collector ship for the ultimate in group carnage.
Take along at least one squadmate able to deal with barriers (Warp/Reave) and you're set.

depends on your playstyle and level.
- play on insanity and insanity ng+ then optimise kill speed and efficiency by dropping cryo and taking dominate and ai hack and respeccing between those and overload and incinerate depending on enemies. Gives you complete control of the battlefield and allows you and your squad to dish out continuous damage without anyone bothering to attack you. Then use weapon of choice to get as close or stay as far back as you like.
- play on easy modes without any shields/armour then use area cryo as its fun.
- like to get physical then use your shoulder pads and cryo with area overload and incinerate to prime enemies.

Incinerate: 4, area
Overload: 4, area
Drone: 4, explosive
Passive: 4, Mechanic
Cryo: 1
Bonus: Squad Warp Ammo. Yep the WAmmo, I like to be mainly independent with my builds which in result, I can pretty much bring whoever I want. I mainly rumble with Zaeed and Garrus or Kasumi and Samara.

I would say that when you encounter enemies of roughly equal threat level, target whichever is closest with your attack drone and shoot the same target, preferably killing it before the drone dies. That way, you can use offensive powers while attacking, and the drone gets to move on to the next target so you don't have to recast it. But if you encounter a boss type enemy and lots of weak lackeys, I'd recommend either keeping the boss busy with the attack drone while you take care of the rest, or concentrate on killing the lackeys with the explosive drone. However, I see attack drone as more versatile overall so I go with that.
If I had to have one build for the whole game (without bonus powers), an NG+ insanity for example, it would be
Overload (10) - Area
Incinerate (10) - Blast
Combat drone (10) - Attack drone
Cryo blast (10) - Full cryo blast
AI hacking (1)
Mastery (10) - Mechanic
