When you first meet Jack. She rips 2 heavy mech's to shreds on her own. When you first see Thane, he effortlessly clears a room full of Eclipse Mercs. BUT. When they join you can they repeat such actions? Like hell can they. I find that Jack and Thane are two squad members that die constantly, what happened to their awesomeness when they joined Shepard?

To be fair on this one though, Garrus did get fff'd by a gunship and Legion was ass raped by a bunch of Husks.

Let's not forget Kasumi's awesome ability to jump onto a gunship and take out its shield. Where did that go?

cutscenes, not the same thing as gameplay.

People cant see the difference between the "Awesome character this is why you bothered recruiting the psycho ****" cutscene and gameplay balance?

Would you really want to play that much if Jack could kill 4 heavy mechs in 2 seconds without a gun?

What would Shepard do? Carry her drink?

The problem is that if the character isn't actually awesome, it's just a cheat and bad writing that *hurts* immersion instead of improving it.  That scene could have been drastically improved by making it one Ymir and two Lokis, and having the Ymir crushed by falling rubble or otherwise incapacitated by an explosion and letting Jack take care of the two remaining Lokis, which is plausible on normal difficulty.

And Tali forgot how to throw grenades in the first game.

this has been an issue since the dawn of gaming.

before squad-mates join you in any game they're almost always stronger.

OR enemies that are big bosses but become friends later on...characters are always more powerful when they're fighting you it seems.

I can only think of one game (Lunar: Silver Star Story) where someone (Ghaleon) joined your party with all the powers they were supposed to have (yay, free levels!). Of course, it was only a temporary party member, and when you run into him again, he turns out to be a boss who kicks your behind the first time you meet him. And an agonizingly long boss fight if you happen to forget something before going up to meet him (stupid ocarina).

I gotta say, it's hilarious that you can recruit her and do her loyalty mission *before* Garrus' recruitment mission.

You can only imagine Shep going: "WTF was so different between *that* gunship and one you took out?  Oh, right, you weren't emotionally invested."

Seriously, they should've done something about the DLC characters' mission triggering later in the game... Oh well.

I don't remember Garrus loyalty mission gunship had a shield even on insanity... Only armor...

I ve got only a problem with Jack recuitment mission...  2 Ymirs solo ?  Breaking armored walls and doors like they are paper ? WTF ??? Ridiculous... They should have done it another way.

Another game with a character staying as powerful in your team : Final Fantasy Tactics (the PSone version) with Orlandu... Playing with him was like cheating...

I have to agree with the OP on this one. I have lots of minor issues with the game but overall it is easily one of my favorite games of all time. If I didn't like it so much this wouldn't bother me. But this is my biggest annoyance in the entire game. Worse than planet scanning, squad members standing on top of crates wide open in the middle of firefights or the fact that I can't have a friendly conversation with a member of the opposite sex without starting a romance option.

Would it be that difficult to make cut scenes where the bad guys were actually tough? This is supposed to be the "dark" middle episode of the trilogy. Yet fighting for Patriarch I give a roundhouse kick to gut and two shots from a gun and have two dead Krogan. When I fight one for real I can unload two thermal clips into a rushing Krogan and not drop it. That's the biggest immersion breaker in the game for me. Fortunately I can skip them all.

I don't actually want my squad to behave like they do in the cutscenes. As someone noted above that would get boring fast. I want my cutscenes to represent the difficulty of the gameplay. Show me unload a clip at Krogan and have to turn and run.
