I'd like to know how exactly runes work on weapons.

1- Does same type runes' damage stack, or just the higher counts? If I equip a fire +2 and a fire +3, is the result fire +5 or just the +3 counts?

2- Same as above, but with status effect, like paralyze. Do the chances of paralyzing sum, or just the higher counts?

3- About different type elemental runes. If I equip a +2 lightning and a +2 fire, will both deliver the bonus damage? And if I equip a fire and an ice related, do they annul one another? I know it may sound stupid to ask, but since spell combination effects like Flame Quencher do occurs, I thought it could be the same with runes.

About spells.
I got the Death Syphon spell. wich restore caster's mana from enemies' dead bodies around. The point is that it seems to work just after the battle ended.
I see the blue burst around the caster when she get near dead bodies and get mana, but just when the battle is over.
So basically... what's the point? (since after a battle you immediately regenerate both health and mana)

I wanted to get the Death Magic, but if it works the same, I think it's just useless...

By the way can you keep them both active? What happens when the aura touch a body? Do you get the same amount of mana and health or just one of them randomly?

Thanx in adavnce.

Damage runes do stack. So if you have +5 fire and +3 lightning you will get the effect from both. Likewise if you have +5 fire and a +2 fire you'll get +7 fire. Keep in mind that the floating damage meter won't necessarily exactly match up due to enemy resistances

I'm not sure about paralysis or slow runes. I know they work on a % chance to paralyze or slow so my guess is it goes up to about 100. Check the Dragon Age wiki for details.

In terms of Death Syphon and Death Magic, the short answer is that those spells kind of suck for exactly the reasons you mentioned. For the mana one you tend to get it back by the end of the fight, same for health.

Don't despair however. Virulent walking bomb is hilariously fun and Death Cloud and the Curse of Mortality are also awesome.

The two things that limit your sustainables are your total mana and your mana regen. Some like arcane armor just reserve 30 mana (meaning you can't use that 30 mana). Others like haste reserve mana AND drain mana (haste at a rate of 3 per second). Mana drain is easily offset with +mana regen AND +stamina regen items (stamina and mana are basically the same thing in the game. So that Andurels Blessing which has +1 Stam regen and +1 mana regen actually effectively has +2 mana regen.

Anyway that's more than you asked but I hope that helps.

Yeah, I got Virulent Walking bomb asap, I just wanted it! XD

I had to toy a bit with the IA settings anyway, since it doesn't seem to work very well with the stacked enemies choice.

Thanx for the answers!

For paralysis runes the chance stays the same. I think it is 5%. Higher level runes increase the duration of the paralysis.

Having multiple runes just gives you multiple chances to get under the 5%.

Oh btw, is there someone who confirms that Death Syphon and Magic actually suck so much? Is there someone who had those two work DURING combat and not at the end?

They do suck, and I think only one works at a time. They are supossed to fire off during combat as well. Perhaps you just did not notice it?

Nope, maybe because I tend to keep Morrigan (who uses it) on ranged status...

Probably, you have to be fairly close for it to work.

death syphon does work in combat, and will actually drain mana several times from a single corpse, but that's still not enough to make do without lyrium :/

But I have to be in the middle of the battle... and I dunno if that's a good thing for my Morrigan... I don't even got the defense glyph talent...

Seriously don't bother with those. You'll just annoy yourself. Drink a potion. The mana you are using for the upkeep from either of those spells is better used to cast another offensive spell.

I thought the same... I'm already short of skill with Alistair and Leliana due to sustained... I just need to have Morrigan in the same status and I'm totally busted ^^'

Death siphon and death magic seemed to work for me. I used them on anders and the elf mage in awakening.

I studied death siphon for a while when i was in a battle. When there were a bunch of corpses on the ground i activated it and it gave me some bursts of mana much like death blow for warrior does.

There is however a mention on the wiki: "This spell may require you to move away from a corpse and then reapproach it with the aura in order to actually consume it, generally this occurs only if the spell was initially activated while within range of the corpses."

So unless this bug is fixed the best way to use these spells is to wait until there are a few corpses and then activate them.

Maybe that would do the trick!

I find death magic quite useful and, for me, it does work in combat.

But then I might be using mages slightly differently. One my favorite tactics is to move the mage up close to the tank and then cast Mind Blank to stun the mob.

Given that I play that way ... my mage is always close to the combat, thereby making Death Magic quite useful.

The point is that if I face enemies who are not a threat to my mage so he/she could stay close to the combat, those are enemies I kill quite quickly so that I dun need to heal the mage. ^^'

Precisely. I've never honestly understood what the point of those spells are. They just replicate what you'd use a potion for normally.

yes they work, just not together.

I tend to have morrigan near the front (cone of cold/Mind Blast/etc) stirring things up, so it does help a bit.

Right. But with them on there's little need to do so.

All for a miniscule amount of mana.
