have a feeling the SB was an AI developed by the protheans to gather intel on all the races they were studying, but as some AI's do, it evolved past it's original function and started collecting ungodly amounts of info. Now it's up to Liara, the prothean archeologist, to destroy the last and only source of info on the protheans

Aria is undoubtedly Aleena. There are just so many hints. First the 'mercenary leanings' bit, then the 'not the first krogan I've pissed off' bit, "Sometimes you'd rather disappear...than be forced to kill someone," and last but not least, "better luck next time." Three strikes and you're out, and Aria's given us four.

As for the Illusive Man, I highly doubt he's the Shadow Broker. In the Mass Effect Redemption comic, you can clearly see that everything the Illusive Man did was to try and recover Shepard's body, for better or worse. The Shadow Broker was painted as a distinctly *separate* entity that wanted to sell Shepard's corpse to the Collectors. The Illusive Man playing both of his own aliases against each other makes no sense.

This theory about the TIM being the Shadow Broker could hold some ground. As the Shadow Broker he is privy to all the important knowledge being thrown about, and as TIM he could implement it. When questioning Miranda about Cerberus, she says it is very well funded, the Shadow Broker would be very rich. Also with TIM may have been using his alter ego( if it is true) to learn more about the collectors when he tries to sell Shepards body to them( wouldn't actually do it in end).

It is a very interesting theory I say, too bad we have to wait years before ME3

Definitely agree with Aria being Aleena....So much of her conversation, though vague, with Shep points to it....."This excercise with Patriarc???  A Footnote.  Not even the first Krogan I've pissed off."  And then where she mentions that it is just best to disappear then kill someone.

As far as the Shadow Broker goes....I think he/she/it, is a Reaper.....Vigil mentioned that once the Reapers had control of the Citadel, they had access to ALL of their census data, and ALL information regarding their where abouts....The only exception being Ilos.  And to boot....The Shadow Broker only sells info to the highest bidder without affecting any balance of power....thus playing along the lines of following the path of existense that the reapers control for those that use their technology...(Mass Relays, Citadel, etc.)  Be interesting to see how this plays out in ME3, no doubt. :P

Who is Liara's friend that got "captured" during her taking Shepard from the Shadow Broker?  (Just asking)

Seems hugely unlikely but more likely than the TIM theory anyway, that Old man Lawson is the Shadow Broker

Highly doubtful.  If it were true, Miranda would have told Liara.

Maybe she didn't know? Her father used her as a tool, it's not like he would've told her everything. Some mercs and so on hint during the loyalty mission and maybe herself in dialog that he's the richest man in the galaxy. There could be more to it therefore.

SB = AI / REAPER? Possible...but unlikely. If I keep the "morals" of the SB in mind that wouldn't make sense with the "maintain balance policy". I go with the in-game assumption: A group (network) of powerful people.

TIM = SB? No, makes little to no sense because TIM hints that the SB is a rival. And as far as I know the SB had deals with the collectors regarding Shepard's dead body.

It doesn't make little to no sense, it makes no sense whatsoever.

I mean, come on, people, half of the plot of Mass Effect Redemption was Liara working tentatively with the Illusive Man...to stop what the Shadow Broker was going to do.

Why in God's name would TIM build up this alias that would take decades to pull together then go ahead and waste its potential by pitting his own alias against himself? Not to mention that doing this would be pissing off Liara for no reason at all? This would only make sense in a world where TIM was either schizophrenic or pulling a SERIOUSLY convoluted Xanatos Gambit on the Collectors.

The Shadow Broker is definitely a Prothean A.I. cuz yes, that gives Liara a purpose in your team. It is probably the scientists that broke the Keeper Connection, just because that fills in their story, but the Protheans had centuries to set up endgame plans, so it could be a much more intricate story than we can guess at.

However... It's more realistic to think it was an A.I. from some other race because, as a blanket answer in the ME universe, "the Protheans did it" is only second to "the Reapers did it" and it gets a little boring after a while.

Well, that's easy to say now that you know what he is. I personally think an AI made sense--with the amount of information juggled by the Broker, it seemed impossible that one person took care of it. And a group of people would lead to all sorts of messes.
