Short answer: yes.
Longer answer can actually be explained in this particularly relevant video: Video Games and the Female Audience.

My opinion has not changed from what I posted on page two of this thread. At this rate it seems like trying to bail out a sinking ship with a spoon. The video was entertaining however and I respect the sentiment. I'm just too far past a point of believing that approach to design will ever become commonplace.

Seagloom, I might agree with you if the videogame industry was, say, a century old. But it isn't. It's young, and more than capable of evolving. The fact that it is socially acceptable to be a girl gamer at all is a clear indicator of how far we've come.

Contrary to the video's examination, it is not solely a problem of the video game industry. It is a convention of fantasy and sci-fi across mediums. The writers of that video brought up booth babes. That is an example of how widespread sexualization is. For there to truly be long term change, it would need to move away from that across the board.

Why would they ban him for showing his artwork?

I've got to add here that i think that if a female is annoyed by things like Red Sonjas armour and too much "cleavage and leg" in games i think it is out of jealously.

Easy to say, but we dont have to deal with that crap, so it is like me reviewing FF 13 when i have never played it but walked through the room while my brother did.

If you havent experienced it how can you know?

Hmm... In a way, I think that's possibly an answer, rather than the answer. Some women think it's objectification, some think it's sexist, some don't give a rat's backside...  You can't say that every woman bothered by Red Sonja is jealous. Some will be, yeah, but not all women.
Would you say men who are bothered by adverts of men who are uncovered apart from their gentleman's area are just jealous? Put it this way; aside from his bank balance, I'm not jealous of David Beckham.

There's a lot of ongoing conventions in society (such as scantily clad women in games), and I don't think we're talking a matter of objectification or anything. We're talking marketing. What sells better than anything else? Sex, of course.

Erm...That's a convention of humanity that is NOT soley related to the fantasy and sci-fi mediums. Sex sells. It always has. That won't change. And it isn't just women. As the guy in the video pointed out...All video game characters tend to be paragons of physical perfection. Just look at all the fan girls who excrete *squee!* juice every time they so much as hear the name "Cloud Strife"! No, you don't see sexy men at the game conventions, but that is because women are not yet a large enough percentage of "core gamers". It's not yet profitable to hire sexy shirtless male models.

I do not see the percentage growing enough to make that viable in my lifetime. You say it is a convention of humanity. That's great. It just reinforces my belief that it will not change any time soon, if ever. Every single woman I have met with the exception of my niece and one of my close friends dismisses video games as childish or sexist trash. I know that opinion is not universal based on these forums alone, but the games industry is probably still a looooong way from catering to both genders. Even if there were as many women into "core games" as men, it would not mean the convention of scantily clad women with huge chests will vanish. The industry would want to continue catering to men... and *that* is my overall point. Sexualized imagery is not going anywhere as long as most men find it appealing.

No, it isn't. Because sex sells. Whether one likes it or not (I'm non-plussed about it, appealing to my gentleman's area is like trying to get a fish's attention), it's a marketing strategy that's worked for many, many years.

Funnily enough, my 45(ish) year old mother doesn't give a monkey's uncle about stuff like this, and I say good on her. If you don't like that art style, don't support the people who use it and it's as simple as that.

As for "catering to men"? Conan. I'll leave it at that.

I don´t see the problem with "legs and cleavage". I mean, sometimes it´s a bit ridiculous, but would you honestly prefer the women in games to be fat and ugly?

No, I agree completely. I'm saying that more sexualized imagery will be appearing for both genders. Equality in degradation!(?) Image IPB

Also: Every day after class ends, I see all the boys and girls pull out their iPhones and play games or text. Some of the games are pretty time intesive, too...I have some RPGs on my iPod Touch, so I honestly wonder how many girls download these games with "Daaaw, cute icons!" without realizing what the hell they are. Like this? I'm one of those who likes their women in enhancing yet decent armor. You know, it accentuates features but it's not ****ty or ridiculous. Sort of like the Combat Armor in Fallout 3.

Point taken. I must have missed that before. My experience is not the same as yours. Perhaps because most women I meet in daily life are in their late thirties or older. The texting and iPhone game craze hasn't penetrated that demographic in my town. Your anecdote saddens me. :pinched:

You can just download stuff by hitting the handy little install button. You don't even have to read a description. The cute pictures draw plenty of people in, I bet. Image IPB

Why is sexualized imagery per se degrading? I´d say it´s only degrading if it´s forced on people who don´t want to show certain parts of their physiology, and as long as characters in games don´t actually have a personaity themselves I can´t see why it would be degrading.
