The squishy drones can actually be used to your advantage with Explosive Drone. This deals damage upon impact. Since these drones can be summoned rather quickly, Explosive Drones can still serve the role of distrators as well.

The purpose of the engineer is to focus on distracting enemies and stripping defenses. Your squadmates will do most of the killing; so choosing them wisely helps immensely. If you're looking to dish out tons of damage yourself, then engineer is not for you.

Their abilities are anything but useless... They just cater to a more specific playstyle and are quite specialized. My engineer insanity run is going very well, and I find it's a powerhouse at later levels, though early on it was quite hard.

Agreed.  I just finished my insanity run with an engineer.  At first, it was hella rough.  Heavy incinerate, Demolisher specialization, and maxed out combat drone are key, IMO.  I also chose area reave as my bonus power.  Collectors don't have a chance with this configuration plus Thane (squad shredder ammo) and Samara (heavy reave).

drones are meant to get people out of cover and to distract the big mechs

your squad power should be an ammo power, as you already have many cooldowns.

sit in the back and throw fireballs

The drones are priceless, especially for the bigger enemies....everything but the praetorians......but that is what the Cain is for.

I am about to do the reaper iff with my insanity engineer and it has been quite a lot of fun ****ing around with Krogan by spamming drones.

An Engineer with Dominate is one of the strongest class picks in the game. It's all in how you choose to play it. You can't play them like a soldier.

Drone is one of the most amazing CC abilities in the game since you don't need to strip defenses for it to work.

I'm a big fan of dominate as well, that combined with the drone and AI hacking can really turn a battle in your favor, as it throws enemy flanking plans off completely, they just fall into disarray. Even 1 point in it is enough IMO.

I've played through insanity with every class and I think engineer was the easiest one. Abuse the drone.

One of the most useful things I did was drone spam on my engineer. You can keep scions, Harbinger, and others locked down for as long as you want because the cooldown is so short. If you want more CC, hit up AI Hacking and possibly Dominate. Engineers are probably the best class for CC, followed by Adepts. I still *personally* prefer the CC of Adepts. :)

I am playing an engi right now,  I personally think the Engineer is one of the best skill sets available. The drone is such an awesome crowd-control device, which i think the extremely brief cool down timer on the drone makes the skill Overpowered.

Heavy Incinerate is a great skill that does tons of damage against armor and health. I like to give my engi Armor-piercing ammo as a bonus skill. The Locust makes me really enjoy the firefights with the engi too.

Just finished the game with my Engineer.

The drones are actually really useful as a distraction.   Whether you launch them into a mob of husks, at Harbinger, or Geth Troopers, the mobs will always turn to attach the drone as they are the closest target.  By the time they have done this, kill  the drone and turned to face you again, you are able to deploy a new one.

With this tactic, the explosive drones are the way to go in my opnion as they do the most damage this way.

While the drones are doing all this distracting, I am usually throwing Jack's Shockwaves through the husks, Throw fields on the Collectors on the floating platforms, or warps and overloads with abandon.

I left Engineers to my last run, cause I thought they would be squishy..... but with the Arc Projector, the Locust Submachinegune from Kozumi's DLC quest, it was a walk in the park.

My favourite quest was actually the Geth Spacestation quest for Legion.  I had Legion, Tali and my Engineer Shep.  Three Drones, and Three AI Hackers....... none of the Geth made it up to our floor..... all were anhiliated facing drones.    Image IPB

Haha, I did this too and actually saved my N7 Missions for last so I could use Tali and Legion.  The game got really easy with this group, even against Barrier defenses.  I use squad WAmmo as my bonus.

What kind of drone do you use with Tali and Legion?  I went attack on all 3 and was impressed with the results.  They were almost never destroyed due to the enemy having to deal with 6 targets.  Plus, did you have problems deploying your squad's drones?  Sometimes there was a huge delay.

I found that Drone, Cyro, AP/Warp ammo & Medi-Gel cuz their a bit squishy was all my eningeer needed to walk thu insanity with no micro-managing off the squad.
I hate the crap squad AI so just leave them alone & if they die they die<_<

Engineer on Insanity basically played like any other class on normal. The drone is Just. That. Good.

Learn where to drop that thing and you push enemies out of cover.

Drop it behind Harbinger or YMIR and you may as well not even be there. You can shoot at either of them at will. It even takes a Scion off your back for a bit.

By the time they kill it (and eat its explosive damage) you're ready to drop another one.

The explosive damage can knock back groups of enemies for a second, giving you a nice, occasional breather.

An Engineer was my first Insanity run and, quite frankly, the class made it pretty effortless.

I finished insanity with the engineer and I gotta say, once you get your skills and drone running, you'll breeze through. And I didn't even use the explosive one, I used the attack drone, which I found to be pretty resilient overall. area overload + area incinerate + area cryo and you own everybody in the game (just remember to bring someone to take care of the barriers :D ).

I kinda have middling feelings about engineers. They're great for crowd control, but other classes feel like they get the job done faster (soldier and infiltrator are the only other ones I've tried). But, I'm kinda midway through and haven't gotten all my aoe's going. So that might change later. Infiltrator is kinda amusing: cloak, headshot, move on. Or if it's a boss fight: cloak, shoot/distract big units from team, repeat. Solder just goes into matrix mode and unloads an AR clip (straightforward and a little boring).

Amendment (engineers have great aoe, mediocre focused damage):
I'm getting to the point where engineers are really good. Maxed out incinerate, drone, and specialty. I few more points to max out overload. I find engineers one of the trickier/more technical classes to play well. They're not very good at killing units early to mid game and rely heavily on squadmates for that duration. For some battles, it may be helpful to drastically rearrange skills to effectively counter the enemies with limited skill points. At the later, levels, it feels like I'm clearing out rooms of guys, though the boss battles take time, usually because my squadmates die and aren't worth resurecting.
That being said, you can drone-spam a YMR mech to death, it just isn't fun.

Wahoo, I ended up using explosive drones all round.  I found that the attack version died quite quick, and I felt that it therefore didnt give off enough damage.   Because the drones can be resent so quick, I just let all those little explosions do the work.  The blast also seems to give a short electrical knockback, that makes mobs take one or two steps backwards which buys you more time to throw in more shots.   I seem to do quite nicely with the heavy pistol and the Arc Projector as my weapons of choice.

I think that Incernate might be my all time favourite biotic attack though.  Booyah!   Image IPB

You should try three characters with maxed area overload on a geth level. It's so cheap, it's not even funny. Which makes me wonder, if quarians are predominantly an engineer/tech race, how the hell did they lose to the geth? Overload spam on Tali's recruit level ftw ><..
