How much did that pistol collection set you back?

I'd say half of them were handed down to us by my grandfather.

Other half we bought...but it's hard to say. They were bought over time. Definitely a pretty penny though since they were all bought new.

Well just about anything can be (and has) been used for what you were thinking they were used for.

Now, how do I know your thinking what I'm think you think I'm thinking?

Anyway everyone needs a way to keep themselfs happy during the zombie apocalypse

Pistols are the better looking option when you put it that way.  But as far as the assault rifle - Are we talking a full on assault rifle or more of a SMG?  And if full on assault, bull-pup style or not?

Depends. If I get whatever I want then I would choose a bullpup. More compact, easier to swing around,  just as easy to maintain, and saves room. Less of a chance of it catching on something when scurrying thru tight spaces to make my escape.

That's what I was thinking for the compact and better ease of doing CQB.  But I thought they were harder to maintain because of the design.  Huh.  Learned something new today!  ^_^

I have 10 rifles, 2 for me 8 for my buddies, a short double barrel 12 gauge coachgun with 6 spare rounds for 00 plated buckshot on a side sattle,  two scoped rifles, four muzzleloaders and...I dont know how much ammo....

I also have two swiss M75 gas masks with 5 new NBC rated filters, a tactical vest containing 8 spare magazines, a glock field knife, a 20'' machete strapped on its back,  spare parts, oil and and a repair set for my main rifle, rationed food, a binocular, a compass, snap-lightsticks, water can, first aid-kit, a lighter, a multi tool, a solar powered flashlight......

In my locker there is a CCE-camo one-piece suit, german military boots, combat gloves and a M1 helmet.

I'd keep my head low, I would only shoot zombies if I cant outrun them or they cornered me, I would only move at night and would search shelter for the day. Supplies can be gathered from unarmed survivors or abandoned shelter, I'd get the hell out of the city ASAP. Avoiding big cities is a very good idea,  I would ****** off into the wilds and would only look for occupied areas if I am low on supplies. I would look for determined strong people to form a gang.

Well it does depends entirely on the rifle.  Like taking the normal full sized AR. You could throw a AK-47 in mud then roll it around in kitty litter and it will still fire. Do the same with a M-16 and your going to have to fully strip it down and clean everything.

I am no gun nut by far so I can not pull out which ones are better then the others. I do know a few and that is their opinions. Since it is a hypothetical thread I just say I would take the best one suited to my desires.

Bullpups are great but have a big disadvantage, they are slow to reload. I know this because I was in the Austrian military service, we use the Steyr AUG aka. Sturmgewehr 77 5.56. Its really short and handy, but its weight is in its ''butt'' which makes it slip from your shoulder easily.

If you want a true Zombie rifle get a FN-FAL in 7.62x51. Much more oomph and range than 5.56. The Paratrooper FAL is great, very short and it has a folding stock.

True.  I was just thinking because the way a bullpup is designed that it's harder to field strip, period.

That is very true. I only have 1 experiance with a bullpup (was a steyr AUG. Very nice gun.) but I am a big guy so I did not really notice a difficulty with keeping it on my shoulder.
Never had a FN-FL but that is a damned big bullet. I'd venture to say that is about a .308.

All in all I think I would be most comfortable with a M-4. I know the gun very well. I will be hitting what I want up to 100 yards.  They are zombies so most likely I am not going to need something armor piercing (lets hope they never figure out kevlar helmets) so if I want some good damage the possibility of using a deforming round (hollowpoint for example) would work. And they have a lot of neat toys to go with them.

I've used the FN-FAL for a year in the army, and let me tell this: That thing is a CANNON! Strong, powerful, precise, and almost as sturdy as an ak-47

Yes the FN FAL is chambered in 7.62x51 which is .308. - 20 round magazine, 22'' barrel. 147 grain bullet leaves the muzzle at about 2850 fp/s, accurate out to 800yds. I did some tests, the .308 147 grain will penetrate 15'' trees and 5'' brick walls.

The great thing about the FN FAL is it is as reliable as the AK47 but its a much better high quality and accurate design.

I dont like the m4, it does not use a gas piston which means the hot dirty gasses get directly blown into the action to operate the bolt. Hot gasses = fouling + oil = bad fouling. Its dirty and it must be cleaned. The FN-FAL uses a gas piston keeping the action clean, it also runs completely dry and you dont have to clean it at all.it also has a adjustable gas system so you can use many different bullet weights and ammo types. ranging from 110 grain to 200 grain.

Its only downside is its darned heavy and LONG. Its a clumsy weapon. Mounting a scope is also difficult.

Well you can not put them all on there at the same time :P
Theres a lot of redundancy among them.
About the only ones I would be needing are the X2 scope, a night vision one, folding stock, and the Drum Magizine.

Edit: Woldan.

True and I would prefer that M-4 for the ease of use and customability.  It is something that needs to be cleaned but thats a 10 minute process if I need to do it fast. If I have some down time then I could do a full clean on it. It is the apocolypse I need something to occupy my mind to not go insane :)

Also with it being such a popular and common weapon here in the U.S.A. I would have little problems finding replacements from any gun store, walmart, or homes.

It would also be something rather situational. I would be hoping that I would not need it an avoid situations that the zombies see me so far out.

THere are so many factors that would come into play for the zombie apocolypse that its hard to say how it would exactly go down.

P.S.
Goddamn that is a cannon. Even if a vest stopped it I would be walking away with some messed up ribs. I am sure of that.

Nah..I'm just gonna hide under my bed. :) hehe

I actually don't believe anything of note will happen. But if you note world news, there's been a helluva lot of large earthquakes these past few months. I live close to a fault, and there is an 80 per cent chance we'll get an earthquake the size of perhaps Chile's last one, in the next 50 years. Scientists can't seem to pin it down closer in time than that.

But then again, from the time I was a small child ..we have had earthquakes here, Vancouver Island..BC. Smallish earthquakes...that make your bed bounce up and down, and knock over empty garbage cans outside. hehe

They have been predicting for forever..that someday Vancouver Island will sink beneath the waves, but I have a hunch it won't happen in my lifetime. And I am not going to sit there and worry about it.

If it happens...it happens.

If you think apocalypse-like scenarios wont happen in the future, look back , history tells another story.  From the 50's to the late 80's we were one step away from a nuclear holocaust destroying and polluting the whole world.
