Don't trust firearms. Too many problems. May jam. Would use but always keep blunt instrument on hand at all times. Be it hockey stick, baseball bat, golf club, cricket bat. Whatever I can find.
Only if you do not know how to keep one well maintained. Oh and guess what? That butt of my pistol is pretty damn blunt and hard.

And only those who are Crazy Prepared would have a working knowlege for guns of all types incase of a Zombie Apocalypse. And I'm excluding the military on purpose. Besides, I'd still rather have a blunt instrument of some kind on hand for when the gun runs out of ammo and/or breaks

FYI guns are not that complicated. Building a computer is more complicated and I have taught 60 year olds to do that in a day.
Of course you suddenly exclude the military since it ruins your point but what about ex-military, police, security, hunters, and anyone that has ever learned to use a gun on their free time?
I will just repeat myself. A gun is a blunt instrument. Why burden yourself with more weight when you do no need to?

You must be kidding. It depends oh sooooooooo much on the firearm itself. I know a guy with a testing project with his FN-FAL, he never lubed the gun, he never cleaned it, he uses crap ammo and guess what? He approaches the 10.000 rounds mark without a single stoppage/jam etc. The barrel is GONE, its ugly, its rusty but it still flings rounds at targets with 2850 fp/s no matter the dirt and crap in it.
And you have to learn how to solve jams, its called ''tap-rack- rack-bang''. If a jam occurs tap the magazine with your palm, operate the bolt twice, (ejecting the jammed round and the first one from the magazine) and shoot some more zombies. If done properly it shouldn't take more than 3 seconds.
And firearms are just great. Can you kill enemies at 800 yards with your meele weapons / bow / crossbow? Can you kill 20 zombies in 10 seconds? Can you kill zombies behind cover like cars or brick walls?
A trained marksman has a combat effectiveness you wouldn't believe. A skilled marksman keeps you & zombies at bay at 800 yards.

Now that you mention it... It would be interesting to reevaluate the force multipliers in a zombie confrontation. The Woldan wrote...

I have to agree with Woldan. If there were zombies coming for me, I'd want some kind of gun. Getting up close and personal with a zombie, even if wielding a huge sword, does not sound like a particularly good idea to me.

anyway, i have a new theorie:
wat if these zombies arent mindless, they are dead bodies controled by demons and thus as smart as these demons. they could learn how to use weapons, how to drive a car, etc.
now, they are able to win a big battle and loads of guns and a few tanks are scattered around. the demons turn the dead soldiers into zombies and they take the guns and tanks.
what do you do?
edit: a picture to show what your up against (more or less)

thing with a spear is that, impale a single zombie with it and its useless when your driven inot a corner (wich is usually when your throw in your last resort)The Woldan wrote...
Yes, even the slightest scratch will infect you, so lets keep zombies away as far as possible. Sword is a last ditch weapon, if you run out of ammo it still beats fists. But a more effective meele weapon would be a spear or a halberd. It takes little effort to wield it effectively and it still keeps them several arm lengths away from your body.

No it doesn't but lets just look at the fact that guns do run out of ammo. In a CQB situation I'd much rather have melee weapons then having to reload a gun. Besides you don't need to kill the zombie in melee - disabling it so it can't move as fast or grab you is just as good. The objective is survival. Fleeing an area while disabling zombies works just as well, imo. That's why for my weaponary I'm including dual kukris on top of any guns.
