Anyone else have trouble with the last fight on Grunt's recruit mission. Rocket spam, charging krogab and a YMIR mech. I seem to have more trouble with this than Horizon or the Collector Ship.
Dominate a Krogan (if you have that power - which I would suggest). They seem to spawn one by one, so as long as you have one under your control not only will it tank the YMIR (you can have your squadmates take pot-shots at Jedore if you like), it will also prevents Krogan respawns.
Hardest fight I was in up to now (I'm just before reaper IFF) was the Horizon end battle... Still weak powers and no heavy bone weave made it very tough for my engineer.

Its a conversation option some time after your meal if I recall correctly. They still died on that playthrough.
That huge spawning husk side mission is one of my faves! If you take a shotgun assault sentinel on insanity you can practically just punch your way through the level. Its incredible the punishment you can take!

anyone know if scions can be dominated? i've never tried.
No, as they are dead once their only defense (armour) is down.

charging on the collectors platforms
That fight on the Collector ship was the worst. It may not have cost me that many more "loading" screens than some other battles, but there were so many times where I died through no real fault of my own.
Charge fails, suicidal teammates, HORRIBLE Harbinger spawns, sporadic to non-existent ammo drops. Its probably the worst designed fight in the game. Its not even challenging, just frustrating.

Also, the last part of Mordin's recruitment mission if you do the vents in the wrong order. I always forget how, but if you do them in the right order, it's only half as hard. Otherwise, you've got the heavies pelleting you from so far away that you're totally f**ked if you don't have a sniper rifle, and when you've taken out about half of them, Krogans and Pyros charging left and right. Gah.
Generally, these difficulty spikes are one of the very few things that really bug me about ME2. I'm fine with the main quest missions being noticeably harder because you SHOULD be scared of going up against the Collectors, but after a few playthroughs, it just kind of seems that once I'm past Horizon, the rest will be a piece of cake. And that's what, halfway into the game that it's the hardest?

The battle that is consistently hard for me is Jacks recruitmeent mission. Each time I have been low in level and really struggle on the part of the battle with the Mech.

So far the most difficult battle has been Horizon with the two Scions. I died a dozen times over and only had 2 medigel for the inevitable death of the squadmates. I finally took to running to the right side of the battlefield, using the Arc Projector like mad on the husks. Once the Scions had creeped their way to my position, I cloaked and ran to the cover on the left side of the battlefield. Took so long for the Scions to creep back my way, I was able to gun them down first.
The platforms on the Collector ship were a bit of a chore. If the scion's shockwave didn't take me out, Harbinger's inevitable flanking did. It was one of the few times I really took charge on directing my squadmates to specific points of cover as well. I don't know what my eventual strategy was for that section, but it didn't take me as long to get through it as it did Horizon. Maybe because I had the Widow by then.

* Disabled Collector Vessel Platform Fight - This thing is a cakewalk with the Widow.
* Horizon - Take out both Scions before actually entering the area, and the initial wave of husks doesn't spawn. Sniper Rifle and Adrenaline Rush make this easy.
* The Pyro around the corner in the Maintainence Tunnel in Garrus' Recruit - hop the last barricade and launch a Grenade at the Vorcha you can see. The Splash damage hits the Pyro and knocks it over, so run up to the barricade and launch grenades at the thing until it's dead.
* 180 Mechs - Annoying, but not undoable. Patience is key. I didn't do all 180, though. I moved forward far enough to trigger the YMIR Mech, took it out, then ran to the Shuttle to end the mission.
Honestly, the hardest part is figuring out a strategy. Once you've got it down, it's cakewalk.

The Eclipse Smuggled cargo mission that Aria gives you after you give her the datapad you find. On insanity, its really tough to kill the YMIR mechs before they destroy all 20 crates. I've play through instanity 3 times so far, and each time I get left with 4-6 crates, unless I make the difficulty easier. Even then, I can only save about 15.
I managed 13 using the Widow. Start off by pegging the first one you see as you come around the corner. Take it out, then go after the one near the Power Cell, then go after the last one. Requires some speed, and some power, but it can be done.

The trick with this one is to immediately storm all the way over to the pillar at the far end and take cover behind that. He can't hit you with his flamethrower there, and you can just pop in and out of cover and take him out. If you try to take cover on the other side or behind the barricade, it's extra crispy Shepshep time, every time.

Do you guys take Thane? He's a monster with a sniper rifle on those platforms. It almost feels like he's the star of that show and I'm just there to draw aggro off him.
