This is awesome news, but I'm going to wait. I want to see BW or MS confirm it before I risk my saves/XBL.

It seems like its pretty safe to me; but it would be nice to get a comment from Bioware to know for sure.

not to sound negative. i don't think there is anything illegal about modifying save files BUT i also doubt we'd ever get an official green light from either MS or BW.

BioWare will never comment on this but I've used this since late february  for ME2, used another, harder and more limited modding method for ME2 since early february and I've done similar things for a couple of years in another game and nobody has been banned over this as far as I know. There are plenty of other forums out there discussing how to Mod ME2 though none as comprehensive as this that I know of. Why? Because this is a single player game and I'm mostly 99.9999% sure Microsoft can't even track or detect the changes of values in individual saves for single player games. To my knowledge they never acted against the modding of saves for single player games.

Things that WILL get you banned: modding multiplayer games, your XBL profile(gamerscore, achievements, avatar stuff, MS points etc), modding your 360's hardware or adding software that doesn't belong on the 360.

Bioware doesn't always go out of their way to make their games easy to mod; but they've never been against modding, so I doubt they'd have an issue with it.  In addition there was some talk back when they released Dragon Age about the potential of making some user created mods available to console gamers, so I doubt they'd have an issue with this at all.   As for Microsoft they generally freak out about major modifications which add new functionality (like rigging a 360 to run an operating system) or any mods for cheating over Xbox Live or attempts to get free Microsoft points; but something like this really doesn't threaten their interests in any conceivable way.  Besides a number of forum posts I've read were by people who've been running these sorts of mods on other 360 games for some time and they haven't had any problems.

Quick question for XBox 360 users (I only have the PC version):

Are the extra dialogue files for Thane, Samara, Tali and Legion in earlier missions still on the disc?

Hard to say since no one has had the ability to look at the files on the 360 disc until now; but I would assume so.  Since they're still in the PC version and both versions have two discs, logic would dictate that Bioware simply had better things to do than remove the files, so they're probably still there.

You said we can modify our choices. That pleases me.

Is there a way to modify gender on an import?

You can mod your gender at any time BUT be very carefull because you need to import a female shepard face on your character too. The way to do this is create a brad new female Shepard, open the save in the save editor and go to the toolbox tab. There you'll see a button that says export. Click that button and carefully choose a place you'll remember to save the appearence file. Now open the character whose gender you want to change in the save editor, place a checkmark in the box next to which you see the words "is female". Once that is done go to the toolbox tab and press the import button and find the file you saved when you exported and open it. Once you are done with that you can proceed to end the mod as you usually would(see opening post).

Samara has dialogue for Jack, Mordin and Grunt's mission, that I can confirm, but no dialogue for the dead turian plague victim that tried to "claw his way out" - She just says something regarding no enemies and all your team holster their weapons, kinda weird.

EDIT:
Mordin also has dialogue for curing Samara when you get to him.

Modding for any purposes, be it for online or offline play, is in direct violation of the ToS. Even having a custom theme installed could get you busted. A THEME!

Technically speaking yes but to my knowledge Microsoft has never proseccuted anyone for modding the save of a single player game. I am also quite sure 99.99999% they aren't even capable of detecting the changes to the saves because all you are changing are values in a save with no trace of the software that changed those values on your 360. As far as the game, the console and XBL are concerned nothing is out of order. Do you even know what your save looks like? It's nothing but a mad mix of raw numbers that doesn't affect anyone or anything except you and isn't visible to anyone but you. Here's a screenshot of an open save file: http://i41.tinypic.com/2j46f60.jpg and BTW YES I used to mod ME2 just like that prior to getting the ME2 save editor......it's just more of a noghtmare but possible though far more limited.

The game just reads numbers and applies them completely oblivious and as far as the game is concerned they are completely normal. MS probably could build a program to crack down on modded single player saves but that would cost a lot of money and then abnormalities in single player saves also happen due to uncontrollable glitches and they have no interest in punishing player that keep to themselves and don't affect anyone else. Why? Because we are still customers that spend money on their products so if we don't hurt anyone in multiplayer or Microsoft's income then they have no reason to crack down on us. Now a theme DOES hurt MS financially because if you make your own you're not buying.

Does anyone know why I can't transfer any of my saves? If I try to copy any of my six character files to my memory card or flash drive it says "Can't Transfer Item: This item can't be transferred between storage devices."

That is strange. My 360 allows me to freely copy and tansfer saves between storage devices. Do you have the latest dashboard update?

Yup. I have the current update, my memory card and flash drive are both formatted and accepting saves from other games, but not ME2. This is infuriating!

Make sure you move the file, copying won't work

I was able to copy today just fine but moving it will also work as you can simply create a backup of your unmodded save somewhere on your PC to retreive later should you end up corrupting your save while modding.

Yeah I got the hair mod to work. I messed up on the gibbed save editor the first time it looked like. I did it three times to make sure with one character, 2 times it worked while the third my characters face is all screwed up! LOL

Only a mild inconvinience as I have two previous saves to work on.

Pretty sweet!

Sweet! Got it working. My femshep has a cool new hairstyle and millions of credits and resources. Thanks and a million internets to everyone involved in bringing this find to us!

I was actually considering buying the PC version just to use these mods. Saved me a bunch of money. So happy right now :)

Yea, ME2 save games can't simply be copied on the XBox, only move them.  BioWare actually responded to our questions about that in one of the forums (forget which one).  It has something to do with their new save system and not having more than one of the same save available at any one time (which could happen if you copied the save game to memory card).   Or something like that.  ME1 you could do it, but not with ME2.

I picked up Datel's XBox360 Xport (using the newest version of the software available on the site) and haven't looked back since.  I can backup my entire XBox HD or memory cards to my computer with it.  The software gives you access to all the files on the HD or memory card just as if you were looking at a HD with windows explorer.

Is there any way to use this to alter your location/progress in the game? For example, if you wanted modify a save in which you've been stuck on the final fight on Insanity Horizon for so long you've given up, to instead load up something closer to the end of the game?

Alternatively, is there any way to use this to lower the difficulty you're playing on, while having the game still believe you've been on the higher difficulty the entire time? For example, if you were stuck on Insanity Horizon, lowered the difficulty, completed it, saved, then modified that save, is it possible to reinstate whatever flag might have been there to indicate it was on Insanity the entire time?

And yes, I realise how sucky this makes me sound. That's not an illusion, it's because I suck. I've learned to cope.

This sounds really great and I thank you for the info; but I've got just one question.

Will downloading it void my warranty or get the Microsoft hit squad on my tail? They've been getting pretty hardcore about console modding these days and I don't want to risk adding anything if there is a chance that the next Microsoft patch will delete my account in retribution for my desire to mod my game.

MS rarely does anything other than banning resigners/KVs. Or banning you for modding achievments. Or if your like me premently banning you for modding a picture of Spongebob to your fileshare. That's reasonable.

@op wtf man? modio? game tuts ripped some much to make that.

There is a setting shown under the Gibbed ME2 editor that looks like it tells the game if you've changed your difficulty level.  So it's possible you could set it to a lower level, get by that one mission and then set it back to Insanity and then uncheck that setting so the game doesn't know.

Never tried it, so don't really know.
