The "theory" is that she likes to assert her own dominance, so retreating to her own quarters (or Shepard's) would not give her that satisfaction.  

As Kasumi said (paraphrase): "Really Shepard?  Engineering?  Right there where Tali works?  Tell me, how genetically modified is she because...wow!"

From that, some people (including myself) have started thinking that her choice to clear out engineering was nothing more than a simple power play, intended to demonstrate to the crew who's boss.
