I just started an Orlesian rogue character.  I gave her 32 strength so she can carry fairly good armor, and I gave I think 36 dexterity, and the rest (not much) to cunning and constitution.

I read a few pages on the dragon age wiki, http://dragonage.wik...Dragon_Age_Wiki regarding rogues. And it seems like cunning is for armor penetration and strength is still strength. I plan on being a rogue with dual weapons (one in each hand), I have two longswords (I believe they're called) since I acquired the dual weapon mastery talent. I plan on using stealth with backstabs as often as i can; but will likely have to fight face to face a lot as well (as you all know). Which way should I spec my character for optimum performance when at the high levels.

Strength gives you better attack, increasing your chance to hit enemies, especially when fighting face -to-face.

Cunning will improve your lockpicking (not very important, but...) and some of your specilization talents. assassins have a talent that improves the damage of their backstabs proportionally to their cunning score. Bard songs become more potent with your cunning score to.

So basically there is no clearly 'better' way, it depends how you want to play your character, and who goes with him. I can give one advice though : don't raise both strength and cunning. Choose one now and stick to it.

If you want to wield something other than daggers, you might want to put some points into STR.

Most longswords require 24-40 strength. Frankly, I don't get the lack of "dueling swords" in this game that would be more logical for rogues (like sabers & rapiers) ... (which you would also expect to be quicker, lighter, and have lower str requirements) ... if you want to be a sword & dagger rogue (as opposed to double dagger), at the moment, you've pretty much got to put some points in STR.

Sigrun shocked me by starting out with a STR of 40 in my game ... well, good for her fighting with double axes, or axe & sword, I suppose.

If you don't mind being a munchkin, you can pre-buff with strength gear to wear anything you want.

There are only 3 cases when you need cunning for a rogue (and they are usually related) :

1. You don't want to spend points in lockpick and coercion skills.

2. you are using assassin or/and bard specs (their talents are cunning based, so you betted pump it).

3. you are using lethality, which means cunning is used instead of str to calculate dmg (mainly used to kick out the str of a dagger-dex-assassin build, so you can focus on your dex/cun).

Other than that (which is the standard rogue build, btw), cunning is not better than another stat, if you are using you rogue as a barbarian (see sigrun build, which kicks ass imo), using a regular str/dex dual weapon build is fine (not as overpowered as the dw dagger mementum assassin or the dex archer, but you can finish awakening pretty easily).

So far I'm using two daggers, and various assassin abilites and just unlocked bard. I have 22 strength, 40 dexterity, 23 constitution and the rest in cunning which I think is 40 or so. I'm doing pretty good backstabbing damage, averaging about 55-80 damage. Is this damage because of the cunning, the dexterity or the strength? I can just buy another manual of focus if I've screwed her up.

She does, she hit about 400 a few times. I wonder how to do this.

Ive read on this forum it was with heartseeker. Apparently she can hit for even more (about 1000) with that skill. Unfortunately though I never managed that. MySigrun never hit for more than 150 or even less and was, therefore, rarely in the team. I found her sort of useless, to be honest....

Cunning all the way. You'll have enough dex and str to hit everytime on a backstab. Also almost all the damage increasing talents for a rogue work with cunning. Finally, of all the dps calcs cunning dagger/dagger clearly wins out.

With flicker available now and 100% increased backstab damage dagger...there's just no competition.

Not to mention if you get speed caped with momentum and a few intensifying/momentum runes...you can kill anything in 1 backstab...

Update:

Shes a beast, she hits so fast and often that the damage accumulated from backstabs or the talents really make strong opponents fall quickly. A lot of this is due to my main dagger having two fire runes of +5 for each which is then combined by Ander's flaming weapons. Numbers are constantly flying about when Lilly Bourreau lives up to her name; bourreau in French is killer or tormentor I've been told. I'm surprised how much fun I'm having backstabbing people and darkspawn lol, I actually thought having to backstab often was a weakness in terms of surviving battles and outlasting opponents but its probably the most fun and most advantageous things you can do. Other than Leilana or Nathaniel as archers, I never really gave rogues enough credit and in past games I'd have Sigrun, and Zevran sit out a lot more often than warriors or mages.
