Bloodmage can also be bought as a book after the Landsmeet from "Wonders of Thedas" in Denerim.

Hmm, is this when you rescue Connor (the Arl's son) or later when saving the Arl himself? (I went into the Fade with Morrigan since my main is a warrior, and she didn't really feel like negotiating much with the demoness as far as i could tell )

Connor. If you sent Morrigan you're screwed, basically.
But like I mentioned, you can also get it in the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest (So Arl himself).

Yes, apparently kolgrim offers the blood mage specialization if you are a mage and have not obtained it already via Connor's Demon.

Are you sure it's down to approval rating? for instance alistair wont teach me templar and he is at 61 approval, whilst morrigan is all to happy to teach me shapeshifting and she is only at 20... i think there might either be something more to it or the different characters require VASTLY different approval to open up.

Probably related to how far you are in their personal story too. I have already received Bard from Leliana at rating 40 or so (And am a Mage) but neither of the others want to help me out yet. Damn Wynne.

I doubt this is the case - she refuses to teach me shapeshifting, and always has.  This is with 40, 60, 80, and 100 approval, before completing her grimoire quest, after completing the grimoire quest, before sleeping with her, after sleeping with her, before sleeping with Lilliana, after sleeping with Lilliana, and after deciding between the two in favor of Lilliana.  Also didn't work when I pulled up an old save and went down the romance line with Morrigan to the point of talking about being in love with one another.

My guess is it's tied to a fairly early conversation tree that I either missed of fubared.

Just got that Arcane Warrior unlocked. Most interesting 'specialization unlock', thus far. Now the question is if I'll take it...

Yeah there seem to be something else influencing it as i just unlocked shapeshifter with even worse condition than you describe.
Morrigan is +8, i haven't given much thought about her as i'm getting friendly with Leliana which always seem to react opposite to Morrigan. Though i have enquired abit about her mother as i found that interesting. After Lothering , i have only done Redcliff castle up until you choose Connors fate. I chose the magi option and went to camp. When i went to talk with Morrigan she could teach me shapeshifting...well if i had been a magi, but anyway i still unlocked it.

Except for talking about her mother abit there really is nothing else that would influence her to let me learn shapeshifting.

Here i was hoping to do a speed dash through the forest to unlock the arcane warrior, apparently it wont be that easy -.-
sigh, least i know where to get it now lol
Edit:  so my party i think now was around 6-7ish, and i was getting trampled in that forest of werewolves, i guess that part really isnt gonna be that easy.(i was nearing wanting to go ahead and re roll a fresh rogue after getting that time in to get a feel for him but after realizing arcane warrior spec was there) well i guess that portion just wont be an easy breeze to unlock. I was hoping to have that one rdy to go when i create a mage(sittin in spell selection now) Luckily this game is quite fun so i guess it shouldnt hurt to badly starting without immediate access to AW.. i hope

ok im having trouble finding the phylactary in the that room, went everywhere inside and hovered over everything and still nothing.

I never had a chance to learn Blood Mage from the desire demon in the redcliffe questline.. can someone give me details?

Loghain can also teach you Champion with high enough approval.
