Do Warden's Keep and Return to Ostagar right after Lothering. They are still not challenging enough but at least you get some nice items early in the game. On the other hand, if you do any of the DLCs with a high level character it is a piece of cake and you are missing some of the best items for the majority of the game. Besides, it makes much more sense storywise to return to Ostagar as soon as possible.

You can do it at anytime up to the final battle. Depending on when you go and what companions you take you will get different responses. Certain companions cannot be obtained until after a certain event, so you would have to be higher level in that case.
But right after Lothering around level 7-9 is a good time.

The problem with doing the DLC early is that you get leveled items instead of the high-end ones... which makes all that premium loot of yours useless once you get the standard stuff (Wade's armour, Ageless, etc.) later on.

For RtO, the best dialog options come up with Alistair and Wynne in your party. Ergo, you should do RtO after you've acquired Wynne from the Circle of Magi quest. Also, Loghain is a very interesting party member option; the dialog between him and Wynne is scything!!!

I'd say any. This DLC(in fact, any DLCs) isn't particularly interesting challenging or interesting, but I think you do get better gear if you get there later.

I disagree, I think the DLC does add to the story and I also like the gear you get

You get excellent gear in RtO though this forum (no spoilers) prevents me from listing them. Furthermore, this RtO gear can be retained when you go to play Awakenings with your imported character.

I try to do the DLC later, however I seem to do it too soon still, as I am still getting a low-end mix of equipment at lvl 18, my opinion, the higher the level, the better.

I went after Lothering, Connor and the cleansing the circle. Difficulty was fine, gear was awesome and it fit amazingly well with my "story".

That was for RtO; I went to Warden's Keep before I went to the Circle, but after Lothering and the initial phase of Redcliffe. Shale I got right after Lothering though I hardly use her.

Return to Ostagar was too easy...sucks had to pay $5 for it...too bad Bioware doesn't give out free DLC like Valve does!!!

True enough but if you have Soldiers Peak DLC, if you sell the gear to the vendor there, he will upgrade the tier on those items for a fee. So as i do all the dlc stuff first, then at around level 17 or 18 mostly depending on stats i make a trip to Soldiers Peak to get the items upgraded, so i get uber gear through out the entire game.

Hm, I was saving Ostagar for the *secret companion*

So you guys are saying I should go there right away with Alistair and Wynne?

RtO stuff doesn't seem to scale the same way. The weapons have always been tier 5 for me no matter what level I went at, for example. OTOH, Warden's Peak definitely masively scales.

Alistair, Wynne and Leiliana make a good group for RtO, except for the weird convo at the end.

I've gone with a high level character for all the DLCs. That way I ended up with tier 9 or 10 armour. I also think getting the DLC armour early means your characters won't change much through the game as it tends to be better than other sets.

I went early on, just after Lothering. I found it really nice. I liked the story part of it. Nice DLC, cause I've been using the items from there since. Actually, I think this was my favorite DLC to date, maybe because I did it just after the in-game Ostagar part.

i would say mid game, after you have completed 2 main storylines. This way you can have winnie in party for the lore, and don't get those beautiful items too late.

Hint: if you'd like some really nice mage equipment, don't open the mage's chest in normal ostagar, but leave it for when you'll go to return to ostagar

Do it both ways on different playthroughs, if you want to get all the pertinent chatter.

As for the items, on the PC you can use just about any merchant to "relevel" them—just save (to undo the sell in case the items do not level for you yet), sell the RtO items, leave the area, come back, and buy back anything that has hit tier 7.  Leave the area, come back again, and repeat.  It may take a few trips (and if the items aren't leveling to tier 7, you may just have to try again in a few levels; reload that save you made and be on about your business).  (On the console versions if you have WK I believe the party chest there can relevel these items, for considerably less cost.)

The best reason to do RtO late is what Avalla'ch was referencing, IMHO.

Valaz: I personally enjoyed it; there are some threads that the game ties up although by no means are you missing anything by not having it. I thought it was well done and it was nice to see Ostagar again...

You get some nice pieces of armour too that if you're a DAO lore nut, you'll definitely want your hands on :)
