Is hardening in Dragon Age really necessary?

The problem with Alistair is that my characters rarely believe that everyone is just out for themselves. Sure, a lot of people, but not everyone. As for Leiliana--more justified, but a lot of the other answers make sense: "evil doesn't worry about being good", for example.

instead of hardening I wish you could "lighten" Morrigan. get her to say something nice for once...

BTW, although she's not a party NPC, I also wish there was a path to "soften" or "lighten" Anora.

I wouldn't like that. The whole point of the Morrigan romance is that she's this strong-willed woman that you're never sure whether or not you can fully trust. She's got her own goals and her own agenda - some softness and vulnerability manages to creep through showing that she doubts herself, but it's not going to make her turn away from what she wants to do.

CybAnt1 I think you hit the nail on its head.

On my very first play through, (I surmise) I accidentally did not harden Alistair and I played an Elf Rogue. I had declined Leliana (whom my rogue really liked) for this chap, but I ended up alone in the end. I'll always remember this play through because apart from the fact that it was my first, I truly felt sad in the end... partly that the game was over (yes I'm weird like that, I feel melancholy even when I finish reading a book, knowing that I won't ever hear of the characters again) but because my rogue, after all she'd done, she was alone. Her friends left her for Orlais, for kingship, for the Deep Roads.

Sure, there was the glory and the peace, but it was very bittersweet. Now that I know, I can tailor the endings to my suiting. Will they be as impacting? Probably not. Nevertheless, I will still enjoy them.

Apart from it making all Alistair fangirls keep their man in a very... unhealthy way. No.

The inter-companions banter changes if Al/Lel becomes hardened. Also I think Lel stops giggling so much.

Nah, she still giggles.

If I remember correctly, you can give the hardening line to Alistair and he'll ponder it for a while. Eventually he'll come to camp and be like "Yeah, I really should make decisions for myself"

At which point you can (or can't? I can't remember if it reversed the hardening, but I'm pretty sure it did) tell him to go back to doing what he's told, to which he'll be submissive.

It reminds me of the inspirational speech Bart gives to principal Skinners in the Simpsons:

Bart: All your life, you’ve been doing what other people tell you to do -- your mother, the army, Superintendent Chalmers. Just this once, man, stand up for yourself.

Skinner: Yes, Bart

Edna: Come on, Seymour

Skinner: Yes, Edna

And then after a moment

Skinner: Wait! We're not going anywhere! I'm going to do what Bart should have told me to do a long time ago!

The Alistair hardening dialog has never made any sense to me. Alistair lacks confidence in his abilities and may indeed need to look out for his own interests more, but I can't recall him ever striking me as excessively trustful of other people. If anything (think of his reactions to pretty much all your companions except Wynne), he tends to expect the worst of people...Goldanna aside. And who could possibly have predicted that Goldanna would not only not be interested in meeting her half-brother, but be too stupid to take advantage of him in a meaningful way. It would have made for a much more interesting sub-quest if Goldanna had pretended to be sweet to him and then betrayed the party's location to Loghain, resulting in an ambush.

Incidentally, this thread really needs to be moved to a forum where spoilers allowed, since it's pretty much impossible to discuss this without spoilers.

I'm a wuss. I hardened Alistair once just so we could become King and Queen and I never did it again. I have him remain a Grey Warden now.

I consider the whole idea of hardening foolish. I dont try to manipulate other people in reallife and I dont try it in a game.

Plus, IF I tried to manipulate people in a game, it would have been more tricky than one such dialogue.

Of course, there are those who are doing this just to go for a threesome or foursome with a certain pirate, which makes it even more shameful....

Ive really got to say, that I enjoyed DA:O more than ME2. The party members are so much more dynamic than they seem in ME2. The aspect of hardening party members adds another level that can influence action in later parts of the game. I love having my actions have trickle down affects on my game play.

Having them lead to a foursome, well thats just extra.
