Judging by the fact that the PC Collectors Edition is still widely available in Brand New condition for $60, I'd say that the PC sales must've been terrible.

Not really, I own Halo 2 Collectors Edition was easy avaible YEARS after it was released as the normal edition was long gone.

Collectors Editions do not really sell.

Tell that to the Xbox 360 Version of Mass Effect 2: Collector's Edition.

Is it just me, or does it almost seem like certain people here are offended by the idea that the game sold 6.6 Million copies?

They certainly arguing against it alot...

Naw its not you, theres a lot of sad angry people on these boards who seem determined to run Bioware/EA down at every oppertunity. Posted Image

Where did VGChartz get that 6.6m figure from?

The 6.6 million shipped figure was from a Bioware press release, which I quoted at the start of the thread.

VGChartz lists ME2 as having sold 1.7 million on the 360, worldwide. That's sold, not shipped.

So-
  • Either VGChartz are massively off, along with NPD.
  • VGChartz and NPD are spot on, and there are millions of unsold copies lying about on store shelves.
  • The PC version has sold enormously.
  • A combination of the above.
Anyhow, ignore the VGChartz reference, it was just to provide some context. All I wanted to know was whether Bioware could confirm whether the 6.6 million shipped relates entirely to ME2, or, as has been speculated, it's a figure for both ME1 and ME2.

Personally, I'd be delighted if it's sold that many- it's a great game and thoroughly deserves it, also it would tend to indicate that PC games still sell very well. It's just that, based on some third party data, it looks unlikely.

We should get some good numbers in a couple weeks when EA releases their next financial statement. The bragged about their FIFA '10 sales in the last one and I expect to see some ME2 and DA:O numbers in this one. It is ok to lie to the trade journals about you sales. Lying to your investors is frowned upon. See Goldman Sachs today.

The link is dead.

A+ for journalistic flamboyance and numbers one will not find in a legal report.

I almost hope it isn't true. I would like if the sales numbers told them that they went into the wrong direction with ME 2.

OFF TOPIC

Anyway is the Japanese release of ME 1 pretty much the same as it was when it was released in the Western Territories or did they adjust the interface/clean up the engine so it would run properly?

I hear Shepard has giant blond hair. And a lot of belts. ;)

And they made very female character quite younger!

6.6 mil? Thats how much money they got. But if you remove the expenses of making, you will end up with 500000-1mil $.

Compare that to 1.2 billion dollars that Call of Duty MW2 got.

Which is hillarious, because MW2 is awful.
Hype, hype, hype.

[*]As I said before NPD and VG are off. Way off. NPD routinely changes their numbers and Bioware already called them out for messing up the sales of "ME1". NPD only covers about 60% of the U.S. retailers (and U.S. alone, not world wide) and they don't cover a lot of the biggest retailers like Wal-Mart. So, NPD and VG aren't reliable.

Yeah, these are logical posts. Mass Effect 2 should've sold less when people realized the story wasn't as grand as the first game's story EVEN THOUGH THEY HADN'T PLAYED IT YET.

I know they're not reliable. However, they're also generally not milions of units out. If NPD was, no-one would use them. VGChartz pretty much makes up figures, but generally refines them once publically available data is released.

Seriously, what's the matter with people on this thread? First it gets derailed by someone posting Wii and PS3 boxes, then it seems to obsess on whether VGChartz is accurate or not.

Let's get back to basics-

Bioware have stated that ME2 has shipped 6.6 million units. Is this true?

That's all I wanted to know.

Ever heard of independent sources?

Press releases are just that, Bill Clintion also made a public statement that he "did not had sex with that women" and then later we found out Bill Clintion thinks that Oral Sex does not qualify as sex.

Companies press releases are not about truth, its about showing the company in the positive light as possible and that is why you have thing as "shipped" instead of "sold" and even when they say sold they usually mean  "sold to retailers" and not "sold BY retailers".

And lets not talk about the so called "gaming media" as for a long time they have no credibility whatsoever.

Very well, since that is a press release from Bioware, I have no further doubt the 6.6 million figure, so far as Bioware is able to determine, is correct then.

Mudface67:

Something weird is going on with the quoting so I'll just say it here.

It's kinda hard not to be off by millions when you only have hard numbers for 60% of the retailers in one country in the entire world. Companies generally don't use NPD, they give out their own numbers. The only people that obsess and randomly quote NPD as the gospel are console fanboys trying to one up each other.

And VG and NPD being inaccurate is directly tied to the topic, which is how much "ME2" sold. Someone quoted them as proof 6.6 million was wrong, which doesn't make any sense.

Lastly, to answer your question, no one knows but Bioware.

wow, i hope 6.6 million units is true. I know ME2 sold 2million+ units in its first 2 weeks, so 6million, while extremely impressive, is possible.

i personally am skeptical because i think if bioware was making such record breaking sales numbers they would be making official announcements to the world about how awesome ME2 is selling.

regardless of the current sales numbers, congratulations to the biowares!

if 6.6 million units were sold, we'd have some nice FREE DLC right now.......

6.6 million sounds about right. Xbox 360, PC Store sales, and Digital Distribution.

Considering it sold 2 million in the first week that seems very likely.

How is anyone able to independently verify the sales figure, unless an industrial spy is sent to check it out, or a hacker break into Bioware's corporate network and snoop around their marketing department database, or someone sues Bioware and subpoena their sales figures?

Bioware could be lying, but I doubt companies have a habit of announcing imaginary figures nor is there much incentive in doing so. It's too easy for some dissatisfied employee to come up and say, "They're lying! It's only x million!"

Well I am not scouring the Net looking up info on Bioware or the good doctors.
It is a press release, not exactly known for accuracy...Hell I can't even tell what the 6.6 million number is referencing. Is it talking sold copies or shipped copies?
Is supposed to be good? Is that an improvement from the other games?
Well it is just a press release afterall.

Wrong direction? What you and the very few call a wrong direction is what most of us call an improvement with a few minor setbacks that could easily be improved in ME 3.
