Hmm. The game is difficult, yeah. Then again I'm not use to this specific play style. I've been playing Bioware games since the first KOTOR...and...well...

This is my favorite Bioware game thus far. I adore the game. Am I getting my butt handed to me on normal? Yeah. So? I regroup, replan the fight and try again. It's not what I expected, but I enjoy it. The plot is cool, the characters are excellent, and I enjoy the graphics and game play. The game seems like a success to me.

Sorry, OurSacrifice, I don't agree with you. And saying that all the people who are saying it's great have never played a Bioware game before Mass Effect? Idiotic generalization.

Anywho, I'm going to go enjoy my game now. :D

Yeah, OP is stupid.

Quoting the DA:O manual:

Easy:
"This setting is best suited to players who are new to role playing games or expect to play combat in real-time rather than pausing often to plan tactics."

Normal:
"It requires moderate use of tactical pausing to plan actions during combat."

And then the OP comes in and cries about how he has to pause to the game and micro his characters on to win on normal difficulty, and doesn't want to play on easy difficulty.

Facepalm.

What an idiot.

But instead of playing on easy, he wants normal dumbed down to his level. Of course, then normal will be too easy for normal players who do use pausing and micro so that difficulty level would be ruined, and of course if normal is easier people would be complaining that normal is too easy and hard is too hard so you'd have to dumb down hard, too.

Good read from the manual there, I actually didn't read it myself. I probably should since they took the time to put it together! I'm just making this post for the fun of it. I heard about this new RPG only about a month or so before it came out, I decided to preorder the collectors edition cause I'm a sucker for a cloth map (got an ultima 7 cloth map, hehe) so I didn't even really know what game to expect in all honesty, I've played NeverWinter Nights 2, its not too bad, I haven't played it all the way to the end, I liked the graphics in it, when I booted up Dragon Age, I had no idea what to expect really, I have to say the only thing I would like would be to be able to zoom in more on my character, everything else for me has been damn fun and epic and damn frustrating trying to figure out some of the battles but it was worth it all in the end, this game ranks up there for me, the story is quite epic and the cinematics are great.
I don't really believe in RPG credentials or anything but for those that seem to do,

I've played all the original Ultima games, favourite had to be number 7 for me,
Bauldurs Gate 1, Neverwinter Nights, Diablo, Diablo 2, Oblivion, Fallout 3, and too many others I can't remember,

all games are different in their own way, Dragon age is just fun for me, sorry to those that aren't enjoying it, maybe you'll like their next game better
in response to OPs statement, I disagree completely I find the combat in the game challenging fun and enjoyable.

I am playing on Hard, and I almost never need to pause or micromanage anything. I usually just control the rogue to keep her stabbing people in the back.

You need 1 tank, 1 healer, + 2 anything.

Set your healer tactics to heal and rejuvenate appropriately.

Set everyone else to use potions if health < 25 and to kill the mob that has the LEAST amount of hit points.

Works like a charm.

If there is one BIG problem in the combat (and this is for the xbox360 -version only) is that when pause/menu is toggled, you cannot give orders to several characters. It only works when the button is held down.

It would be nice if this would be patched. Otherwise, I love the combat. Tactics feel like Gambits in FFXII, which I also loved. They are like orders given BEFORE the battle. Ingenious.

This is a tactical combat game. Many of the encounters requires careful planning. You should have known that before you bought the game.

Sorry you bought the wrong game.

I learned to play and time stuns well to defeat most of my foes...

I think the combat is interesting. It's challenging on normal, and that's fine for me. You have to be intelligent with your scripting choices, and if you're too lazy to make a good script for your other party members, just go with the simple default ones like Defender, Scrapper, Healer.

Got to say i really like the combat, sure its hard and if u run with the wrong setup off chars ur in problem. My chars are in no way perfectly build. But i still mange to win most fights, even tho manny are very close calls. What i learned so far, is if theirs mages in the attackers, make damn sure u take them out fast.

Only thing i miss from NWN is the chance to in pause be able to put more then 1 task.

Didnt bother reading all these posts, but I play on hard and beat the entire game, and only once did I have to run my tank around while my ranged party members whittled it down, and that was a fight against a dragon.

First, you should learn to read before you ever once try to call someone an idiot. Not once, in this entire thread did I ever comment on *not* wanting to pause. I do not, however, want to be forced to pause every couple of seconds, and per the manual you quoted moderate pausing does not equal a slideshow presentation of combat because of the excessive pausing required.

Thanks for helping me out though, you further proved my point that the combat in this game is broken because it can't even follow the rules spelled out in the manual.

Console version of hard is more similar to the PC version of normal - per the video reviews the PC game is by default more difficult for whatever reason.  You should have read the thread because it was discussed.

Actually, it was the "L2P" people, not those that are simply stating the game is "great".  It was a focused generalization which gave room for exclusions by not saying "all", not a sweeping one.

Once you learn to play the game better you won't be pausing every couple of seconds like you claim. Keep trying. You'll get there.

This game = BG with better graphics. When defeating Sarevok in BG1 in did the run around till blue in the face thing but in BGII I learned how to do it properly. This game isn't any different, although I'm no fan of the tactical system.

Friend of mine had big trouble with the final fight of the beginning (in the tower) and used the kiting, I however brought him down with ease. Learn to use your cc. And lets face it, AI will always suck to some degree.

i'm not reading pages of drivel just to refute the OP whose main argument was this was nothing like the IE games.

bull****. this is almost exactly like them. as someone who has a bg2 override folder over 300mb in size (for comparison, unmodded bg2 -- all files/folders -- is around 50), the AI was far worse in the IE games and was the primary motivation for me getting into modding.

not just similar: exact.

* pull off attackers vs immunes/resists

* yank dumb NPCs standing in AoE spells

* run mages/archers away from enemies trying to melee them

* spell select and target your mages in between them using some minor default attack

the list goes on and on. i have no idea what IE games you played, but if you don't think DAO and those are alike, i'll give you my address and you can send me what it is you're smoking.

The AI routine and its customizability is THE BEST i have ever seen (in contrast to an unexpanded NWN2 wich really, really sucked: rogues running into traps in combat and healers not being able to cast auto-heals, etc). However working with AI scripts is not everybodys cup of tea.

For tactical group management you need tactics. You have to stride a careful balance here and this is no easy thing. Or to follow the advice of the master:

I highly recommend you explore a bit more the possible tactics you could use in fights because I didn't have to use the "running around tactic" in this game a single time, playing in normal of course. Haven't played in hard yet. Almost in every fight you have to identify which is the most dangerous character, usually a mage like in BG, and put it down as quickly as possible (petrify and stone fist is a combo that works with most of them for example and takes two seconds) and the rest of the enemies are always fairly manageable.

Try this before rejecting the game because in my opinion is one of the best I've ever played and I loved BG series.

Good luck mate!

1) If you KNOW there are immunities nothing stops you from altering their behaviour. You can tell them HOW to engage and change behaviour on the fly.

2) There are lots of tactics wich include NOT STANDING in AOE but leaving it.

3) Interestingly i don't set up my ranged chars to run from enemys. But rather i script some defensive behaviour (weaken spell if meleed as an example) and set up my tank to draw away enemys from my ranged characters. You can also make them run but i wonder: is this useful? Won't the enemy follow you on your heels?

4) Whoa, hold. I can tell them EXACTLY when to use what spell choosing from a huge list of conditionsand it works like a charm. The only complaint i have is the LIMIT for "AI commands" is set by character development and you have to actually skill it. I think it should be maxed right from scratch because enhancing AI behaviour is not a good way of char progression. The AI should be up to spec right from the start.

So none off your points remain valid i fear. I think your problem is you have been not very succesful at setting up behaviour settings or you have not even tried it. Because what you describe here is the DEFAULT setting for the AI. It can be vastly twaked however and THAT is where you really see a huge difference to... anything on the market. I do not think there is a game wich allows more freedom in setting behaviour patterns. And it is (to me) done in a VERY accesible way.

I wonder... could it be a difference between the 360 and the PC version? What are you using? 360?

The combat in Dragon Age is exceptional, by far the best of any RPG to this date. It has everything really, tonnes of abilities, looks pretty, and requires a lot of tactical thought; such as where to position your party members.

Edit: I should add, I play the PC version on normal with the patch. I have about 25 hours play time and have had about 3 game overs in that time, but each time I could see what went wrong and the second attempt worked.

I'm almost certain there must be differences in whatever the people here experience. There is for sure a difference between 360 and PC, that's official, but maybe also between PC versions. First off, I didn't patch up to 1.01 yet because of the play-button bug I'd rather avoid. On "normal" I'm having nightmarish times very often, some encounters were completely impossible for me. And no, I'm not an action gamer and yes, I played D&D games on hardcore, and yes, I micromanage every fart my party members do. If someone who has experienced the exact same encounters as I did at the exact same level, and still calls me a whiner and tells me to L2P, there is either something completely different in his game, or he's a show-off and only trying to insult, period. In DA:O, on normal difficulty, I've had some of the most frustrating battles I've ever seen in my gaming life, talk about constantly reloading and micromanaging a random encounter for more than 4 hours.

are you dense?  i was showing the similarities between the IE games' AI and DAO, nothing more.  some of my bg2 scripts are 5000+ lines of code.  i'm all set here but thanks :)  (for the record i completely agree with "free" tactics slots;  that i have to waste battle planning space just so they'll use a healing potion is pathetic.  many gripes about that, so little time).

===========

a few other things are at play here, though:  all of these enemies are virtual unknowns.  i'm just now starting to notice which creatures have physical damage resistances.  also, some enemy are mobbers (they'll just cluster around whoever's closest) and others are unbelievably skittish (changing targets with nearly every attack).  all these unknowns can make an otherwise evenly matched battle overwhelmingly frustrating.  finally, not all of these battles are precisely scaled.  what was impossible at level 5 might be a joke at level 15, whereas other fights will be more consistently challenging regardless of when encountered.

hmm only thing i can add to his statement which contributes to him.. is that i prefer a added combat setup as in kotor to add up to 4 consequtive actions to one player. - taunt target - shield block - assault - etc. but this guy just play complain about the fact he cant rush in and just win by easy and watch how his 4 heros steamroll 10 mobs.

i love to play tactics with stronger then average players against bigger groups of normal man like guards and stuff.

plus the fact that a misstake also costs u ur live in a dungeon is great..... a mage being overwhelmd by a werewolves is a critical moment for the start of a combat... u cant allow mistakes like that....so tactic is a must.

love the normal/hard mode in this game....

I bought mine through Steam, so 1.01 was done automatically.  I noticed no difference on normal, despite the claims that party members are supposed to do more damage on normal now.

It's by far the most frustrating combat experience ever developed by Bioware.  They obviously know the combat is flawed because they patched the game 2 days after release to try and make it easier.  There will clearly be another patch at some point to further correct the broken mechanics in "normal" vs the other difficulty levels.
