I know you can do 2 out 3 main missions to continue to Virmire, I never done the minimum so Is it possible to not recruit Liara in ME1?
if so is does that effect interactions in ME2?

One of the few times in the game time actually passes when you do missions. Turns out that while you've been gallivanting around the galaxy, Liara's been sitting there in stasis, staring at the wall. Pick her up near the end and she thinks you're a hallucination.Ray Joel Oh wrote...

Something about "I guess you didn't need me" or something similar.
Well, if you do Feros, Noveria, and then go to Therum, she'll think you're a hallucination induced from her being in that bubble for so long. Keeps it up for a while, too.

Its worth doing (or seeing) once just to see the scene.

Then in my second playthrough when I went to Therum first, I was surprised to get a different response.
Funny how that goes.

I don't understand why just doing Therum last rather than first or second suddenly makes her think you're a hallucination.

You can still recruit them just don't visit Liara.Sir Ulrich Von Lichenstien wrote...
One other thing to point out is that thanks to Kasumi and Zaeed, if you want to, you don't have to have any interaction with her in ME2, course, this comes at the cost of not being able to recruit Thane or Samara, but wouldn't suprise me if there are some people that wouldn't mind that
