Just got this game, and I'm running into problems. Win 7 x64 Intel i5 Dual-core w/ ATI Radeon Sapphire HD 5750

When I go to create a character, everything looks normal at first.  Except some race/class combinations when chosen make the character preview dissapear... Like a Dwarf Fighter, either commoner or royal... I can't see anything. Then if I choose to continue anyway to stat selection, I click the arrows to allocate my available stat points. The number of points I have left to spend goes down appropriately, but the stats I put them into don't go up at all or anything.

What is wrong?!
