[Cayenne Firepepper]

HI guys,

I just thought I would try to find out if there are others out there having innocent player names rejected because they are considered profanity.

Well, as you can gather, it has happened to me.

I have been naming some characters after different types of wine.  One is a "cute" little elf girl, with a blond pony-tail and pointed ears.  Her name, to go along with the wine theme, and the color of her hair, was to be "Chardonnay."

Now that seems innocent enough to me.  But no, she was rejected.  Can you believe it, "Chardonnay" is considered by BioWare to be profaine.

I live in wine country, and I have never heard of anyone thinking the word "Chardonnay" was any kind of profanity, given, producers of certain red wines, and ale-drinking dwarfs may disagree.

I am calling upon the devs, Chris, for a voice of reason.  Let me name my character Chardonnay.  Do you guys have something against white wines?  After all, I do have a character named after a dark red wine, "Merlot."  However, she has dark red hair.

Is Cabernet Savignon profane, also?  How about Savignon Blanc, or  Riesling?  Would you ban Gewurztraminer?

How abouit the Zinfandels, reds, blushes, or whites?  Do you have something against Syrah, or Pinot Noir?

I could go on, but I hope you get the point.  Banning poor little Chardonnay is an act of ridiculousness.

Is it really that big of a deal? I mean, I understand your point in how its ridiculous that name is deemed to be using profanity, but you can always just make up another name.

Yes, Mavestino, perhaps I will try "Woody." Remember the Walter Lantz character, Woody Woodpecker? Probably banned in Boston....

Try with some other wine stuffs, see if they are filtered



And it might be just a name...until you try it and that it rejects it then it becomes the most important name ever, and you absolutely want to use it

hahaha, I haven't had an issue with it, but some of my character names really come from nowhere and the others are common names, so I guess I'm fine.

But if it helps, the only wine I know of the ones you've listed is Chardonnay, so it makes sense, in a way

I kinda think it's a little profane. Why would you drink chardonnay when you could be drinking a nice Chilean sauv blanc? But, I guess that doesn't make as nice of a name.



Can you not name the character that, or just not upload it?

And yet, all day, on most TV stations, people of all ages see, adds that extol the virtues of Cialis and Viagra, to help erectile dysfunction - that is to cause erections.

And I can't use the name "Chardonnay" In a game rated M-17+...?  This is just silly

Erm, I really think you're making this out to be way too big of an issue now.



Bioware likely installed an automatic checker for words or phrases they think would be profane. It's well within their rights to filter out anything they want. There are always problems with this kind of system, but it sure beats having to examine every name individually.



I understand it's a little ridiculous at times, but, come on, is the name THAT important to you?

Why filter the game at all? If they want to filter online content, that's their business, but it seems silly to filter names in a single player game.

I honestly agree.
But it is their decision, and it's not going to change now, so what can really be done about it?

I can create and save the character, but not upload. Upload rejects. When rejected, I must revert to Control, Alt, Delete, to leave the screen....

Nah, it's just uber chavvy. Other Chav names like Chelsea can come across as quite offenssive too .

NO, it is not all that important to me. I can use other names and other characters. But I think they are silly for what they have done with Chardonnay!  I thought it was a pretty name, and did not see the vulgarity of it.

I just thought with her coloring, and her name, she would be fun on the forums.

Oh I agree that there's nothing profane about it but I personaly hope there won't be too many blinged up chavs ruining Thedas with their oversized jewelery and burbery baseball caps put on backwards. I haven't had any character names yet but I make most of mine up, or uise good historical ones that fit well and seem to belong that we all enjoyed in our bedtime stories as children.

Just change the o to an e and it should be fine and not affect anything. Anyway she is lovely and when people say you mispelled it you can explain why.

Lol, Boones Farm,...ha ha.  Hmmm... "Shiraz" has a nice ring to it and seems to suit her.  Although it is a dark red.  But, then, so is the character's complexion...Sounds a bit exotic, and just might be the replacement to use.  I had considered Sangria, but Shiraz seems better - Thanks

It may be the fact that "Chardonnay" is an alcohol reference, and we wouldn't want to mislead the impressionable youth would we? All the violence you can't stomach gets an o.k. from the E.S.R.B., but sex and drugs are right out.
