It may be the fact that "Chardonnay" is an alcohol reference, and we wouldn't want to mislead the impressionable youth would we? All the violence you can't stomach gets an o.k. from the E.S.R.B., but sex and drugs are right out.

actually it's just drugs that are a no no now apparently, notice the "partial nudity" and "sexual themes" bit on the E.S.R.B screen (and the unsubtle clips in the various trailers) :pinched:

Good point, you know I didn't notice that until you pointed it out. On another note as it is a single player game why don't they just stop you uploading the character or * out the bit of the name their software thinks is profane when you upload?

Quite possibly because it is a brand name of a well known product, same as Coca Cola..or whatever.

There are repercussions for gaming companies if trade names (or brand names I guess) are used without permission from their owners, at least thats the way I understand it.

Same as folks ..(I see this quite often and its rather comical)  yelling on a forum about how someone stole their name ie: Drizzt, when it wasn't theirs to begin with.

Or..there's the other possibility...Chardonnay is after all a French wine..ie: French name, perhaps the game doesn't recognize it as a name...don't know you probably would have to direct that question at the powers that be.

New game, to pass the time until November ...

Keep trying different names to try to trigger the profane filter and whoever reports the greatest number of hits, wins.

Nice catch. I bet you're good at those word find games too.

hOnOr wrote...

Why filter the game at all? If they want to filter online content, that's their business, but it seems silly to filter names in a single player game.

They're not filtering the name in the single player game, they're filtering the names you can upload to the social site.

Maybe you should change your name to "Chablis","Shiraz", or even "Pinot Grigio"?
"Boons Farm Concord Grape Wine"
?

BluesMan 1956,

Lol, Boones Farm,...ha ha.  Hmmm... "Shiraz" has a nice ring to it and seems to suit her.  Although it is a dark red.  But, then, so is the character's complexion...Sounds a bit exotic, and just might be the replacement to use.  I had considered Sangria, but Shiraz seems better - Thanks

I was amazed when I couldn't upload Chardonnay, because someone may pick out the phrase "hard on" from it, however, there was no problem uploading "Woody."

BioWare, on this issue, I still think you are silly.

like Shiraz (the name -- the Aussie stuff is bleah).

But for a white, I dunno -- Verdicchio?  Marsanne?  Ughi Blanc?  Auxerrois?  OK, OK...

I suggest Jerez (sherry).

How about C'ardhonay?

In all honesty, it's this kind of sensureship I appreciate less than others.

It's a minor thing and on such a offensive scale, I think most people are above naming their creations Hitler-chan or Urine and penis-face

You've never played much online, have you...

I'm assuming this is some sort of test run for the Star Wars name filters.  I don't envy the guys who have to implement that.

So what?
What's with the over-protectivness. I really couldn't care less how someone name their character, especially in a single-player game.

I have, I just like to think highly of this community. :P

You know, I thought it was going to fall all to bits and pieces as soon as we got the social site, but for the most part, things are actually hanging pretty neatly together.

Wish the devs had some free time to chat more though, I think they feared this site as much as some of our most skeptical community members.

Me neither, especially not after the "gay, lesbian filter" fiasco. <_<

So basically they're not stopping you from creating, naming and saving your character, but just stopping you from uploading its information online. If that's the case I don't see why you're making such a fuss about it. (And considering Bioware owns the rights to the game they could infact add cencorship to the namecreation in the singleplayer if they wanted to, but that's besides the point here.) But before you go blustering about at me, I do agree that rejecting your character name is silly, given the relevant meaning to it, But its not THIS big off an issue.

Although the whole "hardon" thing inside the name might actually be what triggered the rejection since the automatic rejection systems in use search for all "bannable" words both as part off the name or as the name on a whole. Id advise contacting Bioware through the proper channels, explaining the situation and your intention with the name. And maybe they can do something to make your character "accepted"

chardonnay. Now lets break that down c.hard.on.nay. See there's the problem. It screened your name and found that the middle of your name would be disagreeable heh.

Seems the name filter is ambitious indeed!

Again, thanks guys for all your comments. I was still wondering of other folks had the same type issue with character names.

And as I said before, it is not a big deal. I just thought the name fit the character, and was disappointed when I couldn't upload it. I can still have that char in my stand alone game, if I want.
I just thought it would be fun to have Chardonnay do things on the forums. She is not even my avatar...

Again, on the censorship of this particular name, BioWare comes across as silly, to me. Especially considering the MA-17+ rating for the game. Chardonnay = Profane? I just thought it was a pretty name.

Please don't misunderstand me. I am thankful that we were given the opportunity to play with the Character Creation ahead of game release. This gives us and BioWare a chance to learn a few things about the process.

Opps, can I use the word ahead, it can be broken down...lol

maybe it's an objection too "C(See), Hard on?  Nay!" and took it as an endorsement of erectile dysfunction medication?  Or as an anti-procreation message?

I doubt you would.  Your avatar suggests a prudish nature that would instinctively avoid such a social faux pas!
