I was using 169.25 and the updating software windows provides(searches on the net) didn't find the newest driver.

195.62 is out and works wonders. Got rid of the stuttering and occasional crash.

I'm using a laptop with the chipset NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS - it runs smoothly on Medium detail, Medium textures, no anti-aliasing.

You are a lucky one with that card.  The 8600 cards SHOULD BE  working, and yet many of them are not.  An 8400m is a terrible junker (it's an actual card, but not even as good as ATI's current video chips) really shouldn't perform at all well, it's so far below minimum.

The drivers seem to be problematic with 8600s.

Yeah, I was very, very pleased that the game runs as well as it does.  I wasn't sure what to expect with the 8400M - I was prepared for the worst.  I'm stuck on this laptop for now, and won't be getting any sort of gaming-quality computer until I'm done with law school (one more semester).  I started on Low/Low, and eventually bumped things up Medium/Medium.  Changing either setting to High gets me running noticeably slower though, but that's nothing for me to complain about.  FYI, my processor is a 1.8 Ghz Core 2 Duo (T7100), and I have 4 gb of RAM installed (Windows 7 64 bit).  My native resolution is 1280 x 800.

I have the NVIDIA 8600GT with 512MB Dedicated DDR2 VRAM (Driver 195.62). My system is:

HP Pavilion Elite m9250f

Intel Core 2 Quad

Vista Ultimate 64-Bit

RAM 4GB DDR2

HD 1TB (2 HD's @ 7200RPM) in a RAID 0

Works without a hiccup or a burp! This setup has been nothing short of spectacular. I would suggest as others have, check to ensure your NVIDIA drivers are up to date. the 195.62 was just released on Nov 26th. Must stay ontop of that..........

Good Luck ~~ Gunny

On Win XP SP3 I got better results with 182.50 than with 195.62 (8600M gt, drivers from laptopvideo2go.com). Smoother gameplay and no crashes. Don't hate me if it doesn't work for you.
