I'm pretty sure Sten will have some respect for Cailan due to him fighting on the frontlines.
There's that dialogue he has with Loghain where he questions why Loghain would abandon his men at Ostagar
If Cailen survived somehow and was a compainion....

Hey at least Cammen knows when to ****ing listen to those wiser then him. It's not much, but it's a lot when compared to Cailan.

Both my PCs liked Cailan. He's charismatic.
My HNM PC thought Cailan was dutiful and suited to lead.
My DCF PC expected something like a Dwarven noble, but didn't have any bones to pick with the cordial and friendly Cailan.
