[Ecael]

It looks like Chris Priestly is starting to "clean up" the forum by removing some sticky threads and locking support threads, but that only moves the problem to another subforum. I updated this thread to show what a character subforum should look like - organized, easily accessible and fair for all 17 squadmates.

This topic was created for the purpose of discussing three things:

1. The effect of support threads on influencing a character's return in ME3
2. A separate organized character support forum
3. A method of Adblocking specific threads that can make the forum feel disorganized

My idea is this:

I. Make a subforum: Mass Effect Character Romance and Support Discussion (Spoilers Warning)

II. The first 17 character threads would be moved, alphabetized and stickied, while other threads will remain non-stickied.

(I used the titles from the squad pages, but only 5-6 of them have actual titles...)

That means others have to sift through the other support threads in order to get theirs. It makes it easier for them too if the thread was always in the same place. It also makes it fair on the other squadmate threads (Morinth, Grunt, Wrex) that do not get constantly bumped to the front page.

NOTE: My AdBlock filter is only half-functional at the moment because the support threads have new URLs. The anti-character threads and meme threads here in the Campaign Forum are still blocked, however.

This does not prevent you from visiting your favorite support thread - it only prevents their text from appearing on the front page. Also, it only works when you are *logged in*. If you are not logged in, you will still see them. If you're posting on this forum, you should already have an account anyway.

INSTRUCTIONS:
To do this, you need Adblock Plus and Element Hiding Helper:

Import the filter list I uploaded here and Append the changes to Adblock.

The Mass Effect 2 Characters, classes and Builds (Spoilers allowed) subforum was made later than the other forums for that reason, but it's become more of a Gameplay discussion forum than anything else.

Point one: I don't think they serve any purpose other than as a place for fans to socialize.

AdBlock removed the ability to block entire webpages a while ago (which would have been also useful). I don't think you can use AdBlock to remove the frame that holds the thread title, either. I wish I could though.

Gotta say, I'd support a move, too. It's amazing how bare the first page becomes without all the character threads.



I wonder if moving them out of the fastest-moving forum (admittedly I dunno how fast the DA ones go) would slow down the growth of some of the more frantic character threads?

It's pretty disappointing that this and the other forum isn't used properly. I'm surprised most of the character discussion or "post your shepard" threads don't get more "characters, classes, and builds forum is that way!" posts.

Perusing the other forum, it consists of mostly gameplay discussions as you've pointed out. A lot of repetition with questions like "I'm this class, which power compliments it best." 

...would anyone freak out if a mod went around and moved threads to their respective forums?

It happens.  I've seen quite a few threads over here that start with the lines "WHY ISN'T THIS IN THE SPOILERS FORUM?!"

On 2. Definitely. I am sick and tired of the first ten threads on the spoilers forum being Character support, and then half of the others on the front page are support threads too. Plus, half of the responses in the support threads are a variation of good night/morning.

I think the sheer size of each thread and how each one keeps getting bumped into different spots on the forum prevents other people from wanting to join in on the conversation. If anything, moving it into a subforum and into a spot where it remains static will encourage newcomers.

This forum is the most active as it is -- even if all the support threads were moved to its own section, this forum would still move twice as fast as any other BioWare forum here.

The people discussing gameplay in that forum would be infuriated by the invasion of threads, I'd guess.

I still use Proxomitron with Adblock and NoScript (Proxomitron is old, I know), so I didn't even know the signatures were animated GIFs until I turned off Proxomitron temporarily one day.

No way. They [hint]need[/hint] it to be public.

Actually, even removing these thread to a separate (less popular) forum will hurt some of them.
