So I’m bored for a new debate topic!

It always bugs me how people go on about how Kaidan was whining, or Thane was emo, or the way people roll their eyes at the concept of helping a character work through something.

It’s like no characters can talk about themselves or their pasts without being accused of whining.

And heaven forbid they have problems or issues like real people. That just irritates us even more, apparently. And if they TALK about those things? WHINER.

I think those things make for well developed characters. Characters without backstory are boring. I’d much prefer that to Jacob, who won’t talk to you about jack sh*t and therefore has nothing of value to his character’s name at all.

I'm interested to know what exactly people define as whining, and when exactly it becomes irritating.

Because they are male and they aren't the stereo-typical testosterone fueled 'tough action guy'. Most male gamers relate more to someone like Garrus b/c he's your typical 'man's man', dumb jock meathead that they like in their action movies and games.

Guys like Thane and Kaidan are more sensitive and thoughtful and are hence sissy-whiner babies. Also, the gals like them so there's some jealousy there.

I personally prefer Thane and Kaidan to Garrus as characters, but I'm not a guy so....

I dont mind them complaining about 1 or 2 things, but damn whatever I do you critisize yet you havent got a spine to make your own choices, I am on about Kaiden and Jacob btw. The only time Jacob didnt complain was when I left him to die.

You're kinda generalising here, women on this forum moan about the male LI and characters whining too much in my experiance, everybody has a diferent opinion.

But it's not just the men! Apparently Jack's a whiner too, and any and all people with "daddy issues"...

Or issues at all!

I know.  But he's Garrus and he's a badass!!  He doesn't talk about feelings when he's whining...just revenge and calibrations.

Just kill me off in the suicide mission.

It's a sure fire way to get rid of all whiners. Yep.

In fact the Omega 4 relay is sometimes referred to as WHINER-B-GONE.

I never really heard Jack criticized for whining, if so, it's not much....it's mostly Thane and especially Kaidan.

It's fine that they have problems, but they're supposed to do the proper sensible thing and bury it deep down, smother it in alcohol and let it slowly eat away at their soul until they're nothing but a hollow shell of the being they once were or alternatively explode into violent rage only stopping when they're put down.  Anything else is just insane.

Now I don't consider any of the characters (male or female) whiners because none of them bring these things up unless you do (loyalty missions excluded).  That's like me walking up to someone with a limp, asking them what happened, and then calling them a whiner when they start talking about what happened.

This is alternately the funniest and most reasonable post I've read in a while.

... And the first paragraph is a clinical diagnosis of my entire family's behavior pattern. How do you know these things? Are you the Shadow Broker?!

Last I checked the amount of whining about characters has been pretty evenly spread among people.  As your post so helpfully illustrates.

Thane: "My son became an assassin, because I wasn't there for him. My mistakes may cost him his life."

Shepard: "stfu emo lol"

Kaidan: "We were sent to a special training camp where the instructors treated us like crap. My L2 implants also give me migraines."

Shepard: "stop whining ****, my mom makes me clean up my room, much worse"

I didn't think Kaidan was a whiner. He even said he didn't want to whine (poor Sbarge for getting those roles). So, if anything, its the player that insists he spill it all out. In fact, I thought Kaidan's voice acting gave him a bit of quietly dangerous air. I even suspected him of being capable of treachery because of this.

I'm okay with Jacob. Guy's got issues he doesn't want to share and is generally annoyed at you for making him share it. I think we're lucky that he doesn't go, "With all due respect, Commander, stop whining that I should share my life story with you."

Garrus was too emo. He's by no means a whiner, but really should learn some confidence. And Thane's too kick-ass to be affected by any "whining."

hmm... I like Thane but Alistair is a whiner through and through.  What makes Thane different? he noticed Shepard and reacted to what Shepard did.  Alistair constantly complains about this that, or some other thing, and if you are a male? that is all there is.  If you are female? he makes some romantic gestures that seem nice until you realize he is a whiner.

I admit that it may be tough for sensitive guys to pull it off but to hopefully gather some perspective here it is like the football jock bully.  I am sure every bully has some sad story about what lead them to be that way but they still make the choice to be that way, regardless of their history.  They can choose to do something against the grain.

Similarly, a sensitive guy turns emo when they forward this absurd notion that their life is crap when they have it a whole lot better than the majority of life elsewhere.  I have no idea why anyone thinks Kaidan is a whiner though because to me he lacked any real depth.  He had no mission and you have to seriously dig to get any information from him.  If you are a woman? you only get the option of leading him on or telling him to shut up... I have yet to find a middle ground with him... in contrast Ashley is fairly easy to just be friends with... Maybe its just me though.  *shrugs*

And the whole guys are jealous of sensitive heroes falls flat with me at least because, like I said, I liked Thane a lot.  In contrast to ME1 I loved the fact that as a guy you could become a good friend with him.  Garrus? the game kinda assumes you are good friends with him though his "mission" is incredibly lame in ME1... in comparison.  And in ME2 he acts like he does not much like male Shepard outside of his mission.  He is constantly telling me "can it wait? I have some calibrations to do"  I mean, he tells me one or two stories... unless you are a woman Shepard and then he is all suave and debonaire... which may seem sweet until you realize he is a whiner like Alistair.

I would pay a lot of credits to be able to find a cure for Thane, because my male Shepard thinks his son needs him... and Thane is one of the people Shepard would trust his life with.  Garrus? not so much, despite how the game assumes you are such good BFFs.
