Garrus was too emo. He really should learn some confidence. And Thane's too kick-ass to be affected by any whining.

Yeah, he's such a wimp. He'd never be the kind of guy who would go off the grid and raise a vigilante team in the ass hole of the galaxy. Definitely not the type to respond to injustice with physical violence and anger to the point of obsession.

On-topic, my definition of whining goes something like [(unrealistic expectations + inflated sense of self-importance) x how often you're forced to listen to it]/skill of voice actor.

VA skill is on a scale of 0-1 (consider eloquence and comprehensibility as an alternative for non-voice-acted mediums), and how often you're forced to listen is not optional conversations, it's stuff in cutscenes that you must watch to see the game progress.

So I don't really consider any of the Mass Effect characters whiny. Dull, yes. Whiny, no.

No one character in ME really whines so people need to stop whining about it so others will stop whining about their whining about it.

I approve of this formula.

I don't think he's a wimp. But I do think he lacks confidence in his conversations with Shep. That whole "Now they're dead. Shows what I know" line really irks me and just made his whole character uncharacteristically emo. Team's dead. Sulking's unprofessional for someone who's as cool as Garrus.

Applying enormousmoonboots' formula, no one whines. Not Jack, not Kaidan, not Thane, not anyone else.

I'm glad we have reached this conclusion. This thread has proved productive against the forces of whining about whining.

What's the actual definition of emo?

I think complaints about whining just reflect how little some people care about some characters. All the issues they deal with are pretty danged big deals, and you'd have to be pretty monstrous to blow them off for feeling bad about them in real life. I don't think that's necessarily the fault of the characters, just an indication of how people feel about them. And I do think male characters get a shorter amount of leeway for feeling bad about their terrible situations, for whatever reason.  It's pretty unfair.

Garrus ME 2 = Alistair except Garrus ends up being a bit more rational than Alistair ends up (Spoilers for DA, you know what I'm talking about)

(I secretly created this thread to create a never ending chain of whining).

See, first characters “whine”.

Then people whine about the “whining”.

Then I whine about the people whining about whining.

Then you whine about my whining about people whining about whining.

Then others whine about your whining about my whining about people whining about whining.

End result: we’re all whiners.

IT’S MAGIC.

Sulking? Seriously? He's a little subdued because the only people he's had non-murderous interactions with for the past two years all just died, indirectly because of him, and he was sitting practically on top of their bodies for two days. You'd be a ray of sunshine after that?

And I honestly have no idea where you're getting sulking, because the very first thing he does after getting his face duct-taped back together is go see you and make jokes.

Are you just unaware of the meanings of the words 'emo' and 'confident'?

So he should just be "Welp, sucks for them!  Let's go to the suicide mission, new team!"

The change in his emotional state from before and after the loyalty mission gave more weight to its importance, imho.  He's not still kicking himself afterwards.  Though unfortunately you don't get a very good sense of that with MaleSheps since he runs out of things to say so quickly. :c

Yea, I know. I edited the post because I realized that too. And I believe I know what the words mean, yes. It's not an opinion you share, but it is not a new opinion either. Chill-ax.

No way. I'd say that's TOO callous. Somewhere in between...

Italics = spoiler

"Fairly similar situation except Alistair wasn't in charge
.  Also Alistair is very sarcastic but a little bit unstable emotionally compared to Garrus.  So personality wise they aren't that similar but the situation and how it affected them is.

I loved Alistair. My female character always romanced him.

People say he whined, but I've never thought so. I found him hilarious, sweet, and romantic. He grieved over Duncan (his mentor) like a real person, it's true, and didn't get over it quickly, but his voice actor carried off his character so well for me this felt completely realistic and even gave his character new depth for me.

It's all really down to opinion.

Alistair is willing to show a lot more vulnerability than Garrus. And consequently, Alistair gets called a whiner a lot more than Garrus, too. Though again, it's something that is better balanced out with happier conversations if you're playing female Warden/female Shepard.

Kaidan literally says he doesn't want to be a whiner, and that he's moved on from the past and is focused on the mission (this is why the parallel with Jacob is drawn so much, because Jacob basically doesn't say anything about his past ever). Shepard has to keep questioning him about it before he opens up. It doesn't seem like an experience he was particularly proud of, you force him to tell you about it, and then you call him a whiner.
