I've been working on that bridge for an hour now.  I could use hints.  Do I need to use 3 of my group members always to keep the pieces of the bridge solid?

No you need three to keep two solid at a time on the right hand side two tiles keep the whole bridge visible the third runs around making it solid one square at a time

remember you need one button on -each side- to keep them solid, having overlaps on one side will not make them solid.
