It worked fine, I completed 2 playthroughs but suddently when I wanted to start it  today, it crashed. I tried it several times and it was always the same.
Launcher --> Start Game --> the first sound of the opening video and then nothing... --> black screen and no reaction to controls

This may help. It worked for me, even though I didn't need the me2 hot fix for me2 to work on my system.

If you have a 2000 and up radeon video card download the hot fix for me2 here.

http://support.amd.c...-Crossfire.aspx

If you already tired the me2 hot fix. Open your mass effect launcher, click configure, at the top under configuration utility, click re-scan your system.

I'm seeing a similar problem with a down load Mass Effect off of Steam. I'm running a nVidia GeForce 9400 GT video card. So far I've tried down loading the thing three times this weekend and each time I get the same results as Jack.

Have you changed any drivers since your last playthrough?

If you have Vista or W7 make sure you run it in XP compatible mode even if you never had to do that before.

It is Windows XP. And the drivers were not changed. I played ME 2 constantly in the last time, then wanted to create a new character and start in ME1 and it didn't start.
I just deleted it and installed it again, but the same thing, where the bioware and ea vids should be there is just a black screen.

Edit: spelling

Been looking threw the forums at Steam and several people have had the same problem there. I've tried a number of the fixes listed there and nothings worked yet.
This includes updating window, DirectX drivers, running every thing as and admin. So far the only thing I have left to try is uni-stalling/reinstalling Steam.
From what I gather I'm getting the Black Screen Issue at launch rather then when I get to the elevator, the map or trying to save.

Edit:
Working fine now. Something in the +30 pages of QQing worked. Not sure since it was all update drivers a-g, Run functions x y then preform z and use tool p! in combo with shuting the system off over night got it to work today. Just hope that what ever it was keeps it working.

I've looked in the German forum and googled it and the standard solution is to start the .exe as admin. It does not work with some however, EA support even told someone to reinstall the whole system.
I'd try it with the admin thing first but the stupid thing is that shortly after making this PC the person responsible forgot the admin password.

Looks like reinstalling the system it is for me...
Sucks. A lot.

Edit: I recovered the password, however starting the .exe from the /binaries/ folder as administrator didn't help either. I can not undertand how it can be technically possible that a game that worked stops working even though no changes were made to the system.

Don't forget that Microsoft wants you to let them change your OS however they feel like changing it; that's what the automatic updates permission they want amounts to.  That's why I always disallow any automatic, and then set a restore point before going to manually collect those updates I think I need, not necessarily those they think I should accept.

But the thing is that the PC i run the games on does not have a internet connection. So the last time i had it connected was when I was installing Mass Effect the first time.

I know you're talking about ME1. But I think the ME2 hot fix is needed for ME1 if they're installed on the same computer.

I had ME1 stop working on my computer, after I installed a new radeon 4890 video card. I never installed the ME2 hot fix because ME2 worked. I tried for 2 nights to get ME1 to work.

Then I installed the ME2 hot fix but it still didn't work. It did not make sense that it wasn't working.

So I opened the ME1 launcher like I was going to play the game and clicked on 'configure'. It went to a different screen and at the top of that screen was 'configuration utility'. I clicked that and got a drop drop list that had 're-scan your system' in the list. I re-scanned my system, closed the launcher and re-started ME1.

The game kept working past the 'hit any key' loadscreen and I loaded the saved game I was playing. I ended up starting a new game because I wanted a engineer instead of a sentinel. It's working fine now on my computer. The above is what I did to get my game to work. I hope you can get your game working soon.

ETA:

I have a ME1 store bought game.

Steam games would very likely have to be fixed by steam. The one game I have with steam is updated when I go into the on-line mode and steam automatically updates the king's bounty armored princess game. Then I go back into the off-line mode and play the game.
