I've been woundering what SMG would suit my partners at all for a while. Anyone have some data showing which SMG works best for your AI partners? The AI only seems to short burst with the Locust, but shoots a crazy amount of bullets from what I have noticed.

I outfit my squad with the Tempest. I like the performance they have with it and they do not have a problem with the accuracy. Actually, depending on the class, I prefer the Tempest more.

Tempest does more damage and your allies are just as accurate with it. The Locust has a modifier which makes it more effective against armor though, so if you're willing to switch out the weapons at the start of each mission the best approach is to give your allies the Tempest on missions where you're mainly fighting enemies with shields or barriers while giving them the Locust is better for missions where your enemies mainly use armor.

So the Tempest is better against shields, barriers, and health; while the Locust is better against armor.  Accordingly, if you're fighting Bloodpack mercs, Husks and Scions, FENRIS and LOKI mechs, Varren or Klixen, or Gunships then the Locust has the edge while the Tempest has the edge against everything else including Praetorians (since their barriers are a bigger problem than their armor.).

Personally I just equip all my allies with the Tempest except for Mordin since I almost always use Mordin on missions where I'm fighting armored enemies so that I can make the most of his incinerate power.

In the hands of the player, the Tempest is actually a superior gun at close range or for taking down the shields or barriers of YMIR mechs or Praetorians since they are so damn big that they're hard to miss which is further amplified by the fact that the Tempest also has a greater damage bonus against shields and barriers than the Locust.  Plus, the Tempest is a really fun gun to use even if it's not as effective as the Locust.

For reference the estimated DPS for a fully upgraded Tempest is...

221 DPS against health and armor and 369 DPS against shields and barriers.

While the estimated DPS for a fully upgraded Locust is...

204 DPS against health, 238 damage against armor, and 306 DPS against shields and barriers.

NOTE:   The DPS estimates assume 100% accuracy and thus fail to account for the Locust's superior accuracy in the hands of the player; however the DPS estimates still hold true for your allies since they are equally accurate with either SMG.

Uh, there's no reason to give squadmates the Locust. Against armor they should use the carnifex heavy pistol, against anything else - the tempest.

Plus, the Tempest is sporting a nice pool of ammo, which I use a lot of.  On 1 of my Sentinels I use the Vindy for mid to long range and the Tempest for the close to mid range.  A very effective combo for me.  The other Sentinel I use the Locust for the mid to long and a shottie for the close range.  I prefer the AR/SMG mix myself.

It is not true that squadmates are equally accurate with both SMGs. While your squadmates are not affected by recoil, their accuracy with Tempest still suffers from its inherently larger spread.
