Apologies if there are one or more threads about this issue already, but the search function provides me with no answer.
So, 2 major issues I have found so far, after numerous hours of playing:
1) Randomly, once in a while, the game just comes screeching to a halt, graphics and gameplay wise. This is not triggered by any specific action. I could be hunting darkspawn, completing quests, selling vendor items, etc. The game just sort of stops responding, and everything becomes a slideshow. A restart of the game fixes this issue, so no major loss there, except the fact that the gae will take me back to my last "known" save point.
2) In cutscenes with major characters, the same behavior is exhibited, but not with ALL conversations. For one of my characters, the issue began with the NPC Leliana (which I managed to bull through by being somewhat patient, combined with not really paying attention to any dialogue but the shortest path).
The second, and more serious issue, was in Redcliffe Castle dungeons, with the NPC character (Some Blood Mage) who I cannot converse with even enough to get his name. This is repeatable, as is Leliana (when she decides to join the party at first).
NO other characters that have joined my merry band have exhibited this behavior (Alistair / Morrigan / Sten / Shale / Mabari hound).
Tha game, as it stands, is un-playable for me.
My system is a dual quad-core (8 cores in total), 4 GB of RAM, Windows XP 32 bit, Nvidia 8800 GTX (latest drivers, 191.07), Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy (1 or 2, cannot really remember) X-Fi, and a Logitech G-15 Keyboard with a Logitech MX cordless mouse.
Any ideas?

I used to have similar problems in Fallout 3. This sort of issue almost makes me want to say that Dragon Age has a memory leak and is gradually eating up more and more on you, but then if you haven't heard of the issue anywhere else I really wouldn't know. Try lowering the texture detail or something and seeing if there's an improvement. And also pay attention to how long you have to play before the issue starts again.

See, that's the real issue... the random gameplay slowdown I can understand with a memory leak. But with the character conversations, the problem is reproducible EVERY time, even on a fresh reboot + launch of the game. Heck, I even did a re-install, after cleaning up all the Bioware directories and registry entries (pertaining to ANY game). And the issue still continues.
I am going to roll a new character, and see if the mage issue happens from the beginning, or if it just for the original character. Will update as more infor comes along.
Thanks!

Update:
Woes continue. New character creation and initial dialogue are fine.
Moving back to original character causes issues. I am beginning to suspect more and more that this is a lip-synch issue, what with every sentence beginning fine, and then simply stopping.
I am quite frustrated.
=(

Okay... update 2:
End of harrowing, after defeating the demon, when "mouse" asks to posess me, that conversation is getting stuck as well now.
*sigh*
Off to the shelf this broken game goes (unless someone can suggest something) until there is a known fix / workaround.

Have a thread with a similar problem further down. For me it began after Toolset + Patch 1.01a Installation. Have you one of those installed?
Btw. I have no solution but do not want to remove the patch...

Yes, both of them installed. But just like you, I do not want to remove them.
The toolset is installed, but the SQL Server service and the VSS writer service is turned off.
So for all intents and purposes, the game is pristine. I have no "custom" content at all.

Word on this. Same issue just started plaguing me about an hour or two ago.

Okay... I am hopelessly in love with this game, and its concept, and so am doing a FULL reinstall now... got rid of the toolset (but kept DB engine and files), deleted the game, made sure it was GONE from the HDD and the registry, and am installing YET again.
This time, however, before even launching, I will install the patch and the toolset, and see if pre-loading things makes any difference. I sure hope it does, though... I sure do... because going postal is against the EULA, it seems!
But then again, on the flip side (game is installing, can you tell?
) I am not sure what else to do if this fails.
I have no clue if/how I can disable lip-synch, and see if it solves the problem or not.
Anyone know how to disable lip-synch?

**Yawn!**
Been a long day of testing, but seems like I got some results somewhere.
First off, environment: I removed the entire toolset (including MSSQL Engine, etc), then the game, and then cleaned out the directories for the game itself, and all my settings and saves as well.
Next step was to clean out the registry of anything Bioware related. I confined my search to this, and am hoping that the good folk from Bioware have restricted all their registries to the same spot.
Lastly, good ol' defrag and reboot.
Load up: Began by loading the game straight out. Custom install (to install on a drive other than C:\\). Immidiately after, installed the patch, and the toolset engine, including the MSSQL engine and assoicated database and structures therein.
First Launch: All proceeded well. Settings were set up as before, all detail, AA to 8x (to recreate previous environment). Then downloaded the DLC (I have every item), but then DESELECTED all installed content. This was the first, and only deviation.
Creation of character: Chose a random human male mage, and off I went to get harrowed... or whatever. Finished that without incident, then went on to the Lothering step, where I got to talk to a very chatty Leliana. I was surprised that there was NO stuttering in game this time!

Immidiately logged out, and created another toon to verify results. I created a generic dwarf, and went on to finish their intro, and still the same results! I am elated!
Tomorrow (errr.... later on today, I meant), I will try to do the human and the elf beginnings, and see where it leads me. After that, some new characters with enabled DLC, and we shall see, as the blind man said.
If one of you folks would be kind enough to go through and verify whether disabling the DLC (Disable in in the "Installed" section of the DLC page by un-checking the box next to it) helps with the issue by creating a new character after disable, it would be a tremendous help. But for now, I must sleep! Work in 4 hours or so...
Good luck to anyone who tries!

Had the very same problem with conversations in Redcliffe. The dialogue with Bann Teagan actually got stuck for a whopping 3 minutes every single time (even after a clean reboot).
I first thought the game had crashed and noticed by pure chance it it would recover after several minutes.
Had some more dialogue hiccups (several seconds to almost half a minute, but none as extended as the one with Bann teagan), all in the Redcliffe module so far.
Not a single issue after leaving Redcliffe, it appeared *before* I patched (and after as well). Don't have the toolset installed either.

I had the suspicion myself that the DLCs are responsible for these "crashes". I'm very curious whether you're going to crash again when playing with the optional content. I actually have to try this out myself later today, if anyone has the time and patience to do that before me, by all means

It is one of the DLCs, ay least for me.
Right now i'm activating them to find the culprit. It does not seem to be one of the big ones (Warden Keep or Stone Prisoner).

Now that was... fascinating. Disabling them all, loading the save, saving again and finally enabling let me do the conversation with Leliana without a slowdown.
Whatever... I'm going to test this now for some hours.
