 Linky:- thegameraccess.com/interviews/360/bioware-mass-effect-3-will-track-1000-decisions

A few comments on some of the comments:

Q: You said that the development team was able to track 700 choices from Mass Effect and incorporate them into Mass Effect 2. And, you plan to have more than 1,000 decisions tracked for Mass Effect 3. Why?

A: When you think about hundreds of choices, your selection is going make your experience different from somebody else's. And we try to think of those scenarios as water cooler moments. We want something interesting to come out it. Then you realize that the experience you're getting is customized to the game you're playing.

There we have it folks... expect about 950 emails in ME3 then

Q: Mass Effect 3 was announced some time ago. But your work on ME2 showed that while the decision structure carried over, the story itself is fairly separate from the first game. Why is that?

A: All of the the Mass Effect titles standalone. The beginning of Mass Effect 2 is really meant to let players experience Mass Effect for the first time. We really want to look at Mass Effect 3 as a standalone title where the ending is going to feel satisfying.

I really, REALLY wish they wouldn't treat ME3 this way. I think this is one of the things that did so much damage to ME2 in the first place: that it was too separate and independent from the original, and catered too much for the newcomer and not enough for the people who played the original. If the game had actually been treated like the proper second act to a trilogy and BioWare weren't too concerned with alienating and confusing newcomers then it could have been so much more, and perhaps some of those choices that felt like they didn't even carry any weight could have been more substantial. If you come into the third act of something without seeing the previous two its your own damn fault if you're confused, and I think by making the game too standalone that BioWare are once again going to miss out on the potential for greatness and we're going to end up with more weak and shallow consequences following through that really have no true impact all over again.

Oh how i wish i could configure Shepard mailbox filters right about now -_-;;

As for the ME games being standalone? What ever happened to mass effect being a triology - its like we are getting two sequals instead of a whole trilogy. Sure we are getting 3 games but at this rate the games will have one of the most vague triology story overaches i have seen - or well there might be worse that i have fortunetly repressed from my memory but still.

Losing more and more fate in BioWare by every new statement sadly -_-;

Edit for clarification: You can make a triology that is directly interdependant but at the same time can alow new people to pick up any of the parts - especialy with a videogame - it however takes more effort. It is the seeming lack of effort on this regard that makes me irritated. Note: seemingly - i have no idea what goes on inside BioWare so i can only go by what i can see.

Casey Hudson:

Ah yes, "consequences". We have dismissed that claim

I didn't really except anything more from BioWare, but I really wish I was leading the leading the ME3 team

BioWare is infamous for making little to no consequences for your choices, so why should they change now ?

I knew exactly what to expect from ME2, so I wasn't disappointed at all, while people that trusted BioWare were disappointed

D: ME3 Standalone!?

NOOOO!!!!

Well default shepard sucks anyways.

Guess I'll put on the "bad plot" hat.

Edit: Its like with Return of the Jedi. You NEED to see the parts before it to know WTF is going on!

This worries me slightly as well. It's highly unlikely that someone is going to buy ME3 that hasn't played either ME1 or ME2. ME3 should not be a standalone title, it should be a continuation of ME2 that picks up where the story was left.

But he does follow it with something that sounds encouraging.....
".....for people who played the first two games, is that the third is really
the fruition of all the choices you made
. So in a way, Mass Effect 2
was the most difficult to make because we had to not only bring in
things you've done before but think about what's coming for the future.
Now it's really about how things come to a conclusion."

I still have confidence ME3 is going to be as awesome as it should be.

Even more of a reason I probably won't get ME3 at release or get the collectors edition. Just watch they make Garrus and Tali NPC's and bring back Ashely and Kaiden and a whole knew slew of characters.

Oh god. I really hope they don't spend a whole lot of time catering to newcomers. I mean come on, if somebody starts a treilogy at the third and final entry, they should be at a disadvantage.

thanks for the interview link and i see your point, but all the games have to standalone for newcomers to the trilogy, as much as keep continuity for the existing fans - that was the whole point of the "death" sequence in me2 (which worked well).

Reading that Mass Effect 3 aims to be a "standalone experience" makes me shiver... okay, Mass Effect 2 "rebooting" I can understand. But if they pull it off again for the new players, I'd be awfully disappointed.

Really, what kind people buy only the third-part of a story-heavy RPG series, anyway?!...

For ****s sake, so I assume that everyone in ME2 dies and I have a new crew, any who survived are stuck with ****ty camos. Bioware you have fans, why do you try to swap us for new guys... Where is the this is an outrage pic *searches*

I am very worried as well.  I thought this whole trilogy was built on the idea that "your choices really matter."  By making Mass Effect 3 a standalone title, I lose faith in seeing how that's possible.

UNLESS they refer to standalone as "you can complete it and understand it if you haven't played the first two, but if you have, your choices will have a VERY big impact on how the story will play out compared to the default."  I could square with that.  Oh, and I'm still of the firm stance that all ME2 and ME1 characters should return in BIG roles unless Bioware gives a good reason why they won't.

They can make the game somewhat accessable to newcommers without making the game into a stand alone. People can watch Return of the Jedi without watching New Hope and Empire. You dont get all the plot points - and to be honest its a trilogy you shouldnt get everything if you jump in at the end - but you can get the basics enough to enjoy the ride in part atleast.

As for the death sequence in ME2, it works for some people. I personaly found it cheap especialy when all it ended up being was a convinient plot device to railroad me into following down a narrow track. But the fault there lies more with how they used it rather then the death sequence in and of itself.

Well there definetly is a disconnect between what they told us in the past and what they actually did with ME2 and it looks like it will be exactly the same for ME3. Dont really hold up much hope for the game to be anything other than what we got with ME2 which was an average game at best. Casey just does not seem to be able to connect the dots about what made ME1 the game it was and why there seems to be so much dissatisfaction with his handling of the way the game has been progressing. Dont think I'll be pre-ordering ME3 but will wait for the 4 week mark or so and see what the players say about the game.

taking your point - all 3 star wars films are also standalone as well. so it just depends how it's done. i think it's pretty obvious mass effect 2 did this well, i have no doubt 3 will, too.

Uh... there's just going to be a default version again where everyone's dead so that new players aren't confronted with too many characters that act like they should know them. Problem solved.

The real issue to me is that a lot of your decisions in both ME2 have far-reaching political consequences (I can't discuss this in the no spoilers forum, but take, for example, the "bad" ending to Tali's loyalty quest and what she says about how it affects the flotilla or the situation on Tuchanka) that basically HAVE TO have a real impact on what happens in ME3 or the story will completely collapse on itself. Even as someone who actually happens to think ME2 worked just fine and dandy, I can't see how they're not going to retcon half of this out of the timeline and/or just pretend it didn't happen. When the characters talk about this stuff in ME2, it's explained in fairly good detail, and depending on what you did over the course of the two game, your galaxy can be a totally different place now. I can only hope the extensive dialogue about these things is in there because they've already got plans how to implement these things in ME3.

Well, people should not overreact to the whole "standalone" thing. ME3 will continue the story ofcourse.
However, ME2 and interviews like this now show that BioWare focused alot on attracting new customers where fans of the first game or BioWare games in general where of lesser importance. From a financial point of view this makes a lot of sense, because fans would probably buy the next game anyway since they want to see the story continued and expect something similar as what came before (like the first Mass Effect). But I dont know...I wouldnt really feel comfortable treating loyal fans as objects and numbers in a marketing strategy.
