How effective is the shotgun Infiltrator compared to a Widow Infiltrator? I've never played as one and this looks way more entertaining than sniping people all of the time.

Well, you still have a sniper rifle ... it just adds another option.

Sure, the mantis isn't the widow, but hey ... you have a shotgun ... those foes better think twice about encroaching on your position.

Pfft, those foes should be more worried about me encroaching their position

Anyway, yeah one should keep in mind that just because they're carrying a shotgun, doesn't mean they should forget about that sniper rifle on their back. In the same vein, those carrying a Widow are doing themselves a disservice if they forget about their SMG and the possibility of using Cloak aggressively with it.

This game encourages bold, aggressive action, and punishes conservative action. It's quite shocking how little fire you can take charging forward recklessly, while being conservative you can lose all your shielding just by popping out of cover for one headshot. It's like the enemy is a pro at shooting someone far away in cover, but gets panicky and stupid when you suddenly show up out of nowhere with a shotgun (or SMG) in your hands (which is quite understandable).

An Infiltrator with a shotgun should still snipe when it's more sensible though. And an Infiltrator with a Widow should still use cloak aggressively whenever they can. An Infiltrator taking these things to heart will IMO be more effective than the majority of Infiltrators who do nothing but cloaksnipe all day and run away whenever foes get close. Taking the Widow tends to breed too much laziness and caution. It puts stars into peoples eyes that blinds them to all the opportunities they have to flank or charge with their SMG or Heavy Pistol. A Widow Infiltrator can be very effective and versatile but only if they get over their Widow worship and realise there's more to the Infiltrator than sniping.

Taking the shotgun somewhat forces that idea into your head. It makes you feel obliged to use it, and in using it you learn how much you've been missing out on if, up until then, you haven't used Cloak aggressively at all (after you get over the learning curve, that is!). I honestly found this playstyle quite punishing and frustrating at first, due to not knowing the level layouts well enough, and still playing too cautiously (and because I'm a bit of a crap shot). The breakthrough came when one time on Miranda's loyalty mission I said 'screw it,' got in touch with my inner Ork and charged straight at the Eclipse Heavy. A few minutes and much screaming of WAAAAGH later, I realised the fight was over much sooner than usual, with far fewer enemies spawned and I'd barely taken a scratch the whole time. Later I learned that you can get pretty decent results doing the same thing with an SMG, and now cruc1al shows what point blank Heavy Pistols can do.

That's one reason why I like to encourage people to try the shotgun route. Even if you decide later that you really want the Widow back, taking shotguns forces you to learn (if you didn't already know) when and how to cloak aggressively so that you can do so with your SMG (Tempest is better for this btw) or Heavy Pistol. Whether you stick to the shotgun path or not, learning it makes you a better Infiltrator.

As for which choice is better, well... I prefer the extra ammo that comes with using the Viper and having an extra gun. Moreover, to me having more firepower up close matters more than having it at long range, since at long range it's not as big a deal if the enemy lives longer, but you want the enemies that are in your face to die RIGHT NOW. That's just me though. And my opinion may be coloured by my attachment to the shotgun.

Hmm .. interesting.

Personally, I'm hooked on the shuriken machine pistol .. frankly, if I had a shotgun, I'd still use the shuriken most of the time. I mean, I do that with the vanguard ... guess I'm happy enough with the shuriken and carnifex up close.

I'd like to go the shotgun route, I've tried it before .. it's amusing enough. However, having 4 weapons and no weapon hotkeys = a little too irritating.

@ cruc1al:

Thanks for the vids! I have been playing a Sentinel (first time) based upon the instructions you gave though I chose warp ammo instead of the shield and thus far, it's a TON of fun to play. I hate to say it but I almost enjoy this style of combat better than my loved Infiltrator class. I also really liked that Adapt video you made and even watched it a few times to get a good idea of your combat rotations (just made an Adept as well).

I was wondering though, do you have any plans to do an example of a Soldier on insanity? I've never really played one all that much for ME2 as they kind of appear somewhat boring.

I disagree entirely with the notion that this game punishes conservative play. IMO, the only real way to die in this game is if you are at close range with enemies. If you stay behind cover and don't advance it is nearly impossible to die.  If you have shields and you take more damage then you have shielding, then you get a small period of time in which you don't take damage. There is even a sound effect to let you know. Just drop back behind cover and wait for your shields to regen.  Nothing in the game can instantly kill you at range, so being conservative and staying behind cover has much smaller chance of death compared to getting up close.

For instance, compare an infiltrator who snipes to a charging vanguard. Both can deal significant damage, a conservative infiltrator is rarely in danger of dying while a vanguard can end up dead in a heart beat.

To me this is why these videos here are so impressive, aggressive gameplay is not the easy way out but if you pull it off you look good.

I'm planning to do solo videos for all classes... I've been practicing vanguard solo play, and it's not too bad, but it just tends to get into a stereotypical charge spamfest. That can be fun to watch but to be honest there are plenty of videos like that in the Vanguard Tips and Tricks thread. Therefore I've tried to mix up the Vanguard by concentrating on using pull and SMG to conserve ammo, and using shockwave (still have to figure out if it's actually useful or not...)

Soldier can be fun too, especially if you play it extra aggressively. What I like to do is storm towards an enemy with my shotgun, put up the AR to minimize damage taken during the charge and then blast them in the face. Another thing that's fun is stripping defenses with the Vindicator, popping a cryo heavy pistol shot to everyone with AR on, and getting up close with the shotgun to finish. We'll see how the video turns out, as I haven't yet decided which map I'm going to play. Suggestions? I don't want to do Collector ship again ;)

Engineer is probably going to be the toughest class for solo play, because it's even less of a damage dealer than Adept (no pull damage boost, no insta-kills with throw).

Ok, I have to say that even though this vid is really funny to watch, there is just something "wrong" about an Infiltrator using shotguns to wack someone.  Seriously, not sniping someone in the head is blasphemy according to the Infiltrator Code of Honor.  Cruc1al, you're skills are impressive but though you're Shep might have ownd the Collectors in this vid, he's still going to hell for not dishing out the sniper!

Considered using the freeze-kick?
Granted I've only done it accidentally so far, but if you run into frozen foes, they can go flying.

Drone, shoot off multiple foes' defenses, full cryo blast, then boot 'em off platforms.

Cyro freeze gives a huge damage bonus.

Sucks that you have to take a squadmate to the loyalty missions... :/. I'd love to do tali's mission solo as engineer :D. I'm not going to do haestrom again either, it's just too easy. I just tested vanguard and soldier on it and it was so easy it was boring. Maybe I've played this game a bit too much lol.

Yeah, Thane recruitment sounds pretty good. Or Horizon, it's always fun. Apart from that, there's not much to choose from, unless I want to do some of the low-level pre-horizon recruitments. Grunt recruitment with vanguard, maybe?

Update. This one's for the Vanguard fans!

It's not all charge spam-fest, but there's a fair bit of that too. Oh and there's rock'n roll ;D .. Hope you enjoy it.

There's really nothing else to do than take the krogan one by one, kill the ymir (which takes ages), then charge Jedore. Of course you could mix it up by charging jedore first or at least before you take down the ymir, but still, it's a predictable fight. It's also one of the easiest fights on Korlus imo.

Yeah. I have the end fight in one of my early videos, but it's easily the most non-entertaining part.

Awesome video though! I had a huge smile on my face the whole time.

I Heavy Charged an Eclipse Vanguard Jack had Pulled just last night and she did fly.  Strangely though, she did land with a little bit of health left.  I figured, just as you mention, cause of the force but...

Yeah. Pulled targets go flying when you charge them just like with the pull-throw combo. It's also great to pull an enemy next to a wall and charge-smash him onto the wall... As you see in the video, the charge at 4:38 took about half of the blue suns legionnaire's health.
