there's part of the problem right there. to simulate someone searching the nexus:
"hmm, random persons morphs, random person, OMFG PETEHOG's MORPHS."
hurts an artist's pride and self-confidence when people automatically jump to the popular stuff, because its popular.

Okay I missed this before but. You know its possible to like Petehog because their work happens to be hands down the best I've seen right? Popularity is sometimes deserved and in Petehog's case it is very much so. I don't like Petehog's work simply because it was made by them but because from what I've seen its *good*.

You know, I was actually thinking of releasing a preset mod of some of my characters. But I won't do it now.

Honestly, I can see why VirusCat is upset, and reading some of this has a competetive nature to it. If I was in Viruscat's position I might feel a bit miffed.

@ VirusCat - I just want to point out that your designs are not inferior in any way to Petehog's or anyone elses. Simply different in style. You are getting quite a reputation on here as one of our top designers, and I think your style is unique and lovely. I try to take a purely objective viewpoint on everyone's work regardless of who the author is.

@ LadyAly - Thanks! I'm having a good time, but the chinese internet speed is retarded, and I can't see any pictures that are uploaded via imageshack coz it's been blocked. Very frustrating when you're trying to comment on peoples designs! But at least I can post here anyway...

Ryzaki: Without a doubt, Petehog has some of the best designs I've seen, they just aren't always my cup of tea. His popularity is deserved, I'll give you (and him) that. Not sure I understand your last sentence, though.

Hi mochen! do they let you see stuff off of photobucket? that's the main one I use, maybe other people could switch?

Hey YH!

Yeah photobucket seems to work. But I don't want everyone to change just because of me!

If someone more popular releases something, people will be drawn to that and not notice the "little guy in the corner that no one knows". I know that by experience and it isn't fun to stand in the shadow of someone.

This is not necessarily true; often people who will pick something that is not the 'most popular' choice will do so with belief they're being more refined/savvy compared to the masses, and the very fact their choice isn't the most popular one gives them extra enjoyment they wouldn't get otherwise. Think of the PC-Apple thing, for example. Posted Image

For the very little it's worth, i was planning to pick up your mod when it's done simply because i appreciate it's slight and nice modifications to the default presets rather than complete redesigns.

I meant to say it was good. Really good. :D I've been waiting for Petehog to release presets since the 4th version of DA Redesigned.

@mochen awww... I have heard here in Germany in the News of this problem. I'm glad to use tinypic - its anyway much faster as imageshack.

About the whole *problem* before - There is truth in all statements - but I really can second tmp7704.
Plus if I want ALL (( yes I'm greedy ;P )) I write my own chargenmorph - I'm still thankfully for that hint Mlaii00 gave me once :)

My personal thinking is especially the different style form our Top people -- VirusCat, Mochen, Presence and Petehog -- (( yes thats my Top 4 - all equal on TOP btw. )) deserves respect and makes so much fun to use it.
For example - I'm very creative  and I write sometimes - The Story I write on the board - well it is simple mine - and I don't care much if I get NO feedback at all. Its a Idea I liked to realize. And , yes, if I get feedback I smile  - we all need sometimes strokes for our precious little souls:? Makes this any sense ???

BAH - to early for my sleepy head to start a philosophic digression.

@VirusCat..

I'm pretty envious now, ha. I gave up on trying to make female presets just because I didn't think any of them looked good enough. Yours look great! I'm just gonna leave my preset mod males only, haha... I can't compete with what you've created, and honestly, I don't want to, I love your newer female presets.

@Forlorn:  Your dwarf is beautiful imo.  Very smoky eyes.  Reminds me of Petehog's female style a bit.

I'm not a fan of that hairstyle personally, but it's not bad on her :)

Not to put oil on the fire, but I like Mochen's work better than Viruscat's work. They are not on "equal" level.

I do realize that everyone designs very differently. But there is definitely a difference between talent and style.

I don't know...anyway..I think this whole thing got out of hand real fast. Here's my take...I think Petehog did all this intentionally. He knows what he's doing.

It didn't happen by accident.

He made the presets after Viruscat made hers. And it was no coincidence.

Not too long ago, Viruscat made a Loghain. Then Mochen made her version of Loghain. And then not too long after that, Petehog made his own.

I think it's sort of a "don't fuk with me" kind of a response but in a subtle way.

None of this would cause a stir if he wasn't good.

I think it's just the way that modding goes though. Long time ago, when Dragon Age popped out, there was a guy who made the first body mod..a guy named Newbypower. Then shortly after him, some other person came along and made his mod better than he did..his name was adrianagi.

I guess what I'm trying to say..I can see both sides. But you can't get mad at someone for that. There's nothing particularly wrong going wrong.

This isn't "ninjaing" because "ninjaiing" is when you steal something. There's no "stealing" going on.

This is business.

Someone makes a product. Someone makes it better. You can't get mad at them over that. You just either move on or you beat out the competition.

That's life.

Well - Now you PUT oil to the al ready nearly dead fire *shakes head* I really try not to be harsh after this post  - :sick:

Anyway - I have my opinion that all artists deserve a good treatment.
If we want to show it its a very easy way to do so. DL the Mod you like, give endorsement and vote for it, too.
For me this is closed now ... Fini ! End !

@Forlorn Your dwarf is cute- but this hairstyle :unsure: I don't like the thin long hair on other races - but to see it on a dwarf -.-

Wow... I see that I missed quite the discussion going on here! Although I must say I'm quite glad that I actually 'missed' it... :mellow:

Anyways, you brave toolset-using folk out there, I need your help! I finally managed to get the toolset up and running, but I have not a clue on how to use it. The Wiki isn't helping much either, I'm afraid, since it's all about building areas and inserting doors and items and whatnot. Can someone give me a hint on where I can find a good tutorial on character creation? Any tips would be really appreciated!!

[That I got the toolset running was sheer luck, since obviously I have no idea what I'm doing. Now I'm sitting before a blank, light-blue screen, without a clue on what to do next. Trust me, it's really depressing...]

@ mochen: China, is it? Whereabouts? :) I spent four months in Beijing a couple of years ago... good times.... B)

placing the morph on a toon is a decent bit more daunting the first time.

(http://social.biowar.../index/176308/1) its the first section, headed in blue, and the actual placing starts at #7.

you're welcome :)

when you save the morph, you'll need the race and gender as a prefix ie hf or dm. I always save morphs as RaceGender_name of character_alt or something similar (ef_rhaelyn_alt.mor for my rogue). that should basically be it for toon creation in the toolset.

...oh, what's that? this is a character show-off thread? how 'bout them characters huh? :bandit:

Oh my.... I think it'll take quite a while before I start posting my first characters here. The toolset is so confusing when you're not used to it!

But yes, I'll definitely post my first design. In a month or so, probably...^^

@LadyAly: PM's on the way! :)

@Ryzaki
The big deal was that is happened to soon after I released mine.
There is mostly mods that replaces one or 2 presets with something completely different. Or mods like Pretty Faces where I think all the presets look too much alike. Then we have the extreeeme preset mods like Fascinating Faces that makes the presets into something I'd say is over the top.
Then we have really good mods like Atoms Unique Presets. But since that's for males only and uses tattoos and such, I don't feel like we're on the same page. Not even if he did make females. They would still be something "more" than mine.
I figured I could make a preset mod where I tried to keep my own personal touch, of course, but also make sure I tried to keep the presets different... but still neutral. It's a hard balance, and I felt good about it, until I tried to talk about it here and Petehog started to post a dwarf when I showed my dwarf-preset and an elf when I showed my elf-presets. And then... even making his own preset at the same time I do. It's not the fact that he wants to make it, it's the timing. He's free to release what he wants, but I think he sorta stole my thunder.

Yes his popularity is deserved. Have we ever said somethign else? I'm not saying people would download only cause he has many endorsements, but because he's made his mod to fit the public. He's popular, he's good... and I can't really see my mod being "needed" if he releases one with the same base idea.

@Forlorn
Except for the hair I adooooore her :3
Nice work ^^

@mochen
Aww, your presets would be amazing ^^ You can do stuff I can't!
And thanks for the kind words <3

@tmp7704
Thank you :) The Male elves can strafe away a little from the not-complete redesignes I'm afraid. They are HARD to make O_O

@LadyAly
If I would write a story, I would do it cause it's fun. It's creative, it's nice to give the character a complete personality and such. It would be fun to the end. Making presets is fun until you have to start making sure everything is where it should be in the download, and making comparision screenshots and such. It's stops being fun there, but I try to think that I mada people a favor by releasing these things. It's just that without comments, the work feels a bit... lost.

@AtomRobot87
Nononono, I won't allow you NOT to make them! Make them as you made the males. Use the tats and the unique faces and such and make whatever you want. It's different enough from min that people will be happy to use both!

@i4gotmyid
That's harsh. mochen might be your fav, but that doesn't make her better than everyone else objectively, does it?
I love mochens work too, just as I adore Presence work just as much. They might make different style but the love and time behind their work is equal, and they are equally good.
Well, you might be right about "business", but I find it so much better to have a bit of respect for other modders, especially since we do this for free.

@Caladhiel
Yay, you got it up and running after all :D I look forward to see stuff you've made ^^ It's really hard to work with in the beginning, but soon you'll just LOVE the options you get with it :D

Agree with your top 4. But my personal fav is mochen. The others are all awesome of course, but what really impressed me is mochen's npc designs, she has managed to keep the original feel of all the characters, yet still you wouldn't mistake her work for anyone elses. That's talent!

+100 approval rating for viruscats presets btw, solid work! I'll be giving them a try soon!

@ i4gotmyid and meathook - Thank you so much for the support! I hope my designs have in some way inspired you both, that would make me happy to know :)

I think me and VirusCat redesigning npc's was a coincidence. I was planning on doing it a while ago.

@ VirusCat - Maybe when I get back home I will have a go at releasing my presets... but that won't be for a few weeks, hopefully the timing won't clash with anyone.

@ Caladhiel - Beijing? cool. I am in Wuhan, it's not particularly well known outside China. But it is a huge place, with plenty of things to keep me busy!

@ LadyAly - hehe, makes me wish I used tinypic for my signature collage, because I can't see it now!

@ YH - Indeed, mwhaha!

@mochen and peeps

The NPC-redesigning was for me never meant to be released. So for me it was just extremely interesting to see the huge differences in mochens and my take on the NPCs, while I think both of us really managed to keep the personality of the character + our own styles. Creds to us, mochen ;)
