Hello everyone. I've been tweaking my elves lately and I think I'm improving, I'm looking for feedback on any of the following. Warning : wallofpics.

By order of creation:
  • Lydiel, city rogue, already posted before, minor changes around the chin/jaw area, more noticeably, testing a new eye texture (was default texture with veridium shield tint...).
Posted ImagePosted Image
  • The unoriginally default-named Neria, magi. The basic idea is to 'kinda' use the typical drow color palette but the comparison ends here, she's a do-gooder healer mage. Has gone through different iterations, I've decided to go back to the older version for now. Initially when I created her I didn't have any character-enhancing mods, so I was using one of the default hairstyles (Cauthrien ponytail) and the werewolf eye texture, then I changed the hair to the Jaheira style because it was too awesome to not give it a try, and used a pink eye color. Basically, I think with the tribal tatoo and the color scheme she already has enough special features to look different from everyone else, and the other design was maybe trying too hard. I've included character portraits to make a comparison.
Posted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted Image
  • Likewise default-name Theron, a rather classical dalish rogue, but I think it works well. Basically Tolkien meets Braveheart.
Posted ImagePosted Image
  • Albino boy-ish city warrior Alan. To give a try to the dagger&shield dex build. He ended up inheriting the pink eye texture I had made for Neria, another reason why I wanted to go back to the first Neria design, I like not reusing the same settings between different characters if I can. Lighting is a little bad here because the only hard save I had is in the tower of Ishal...
Posted ImagePosted Image
  • Finally, noble-looking Dalish warrior Elvalia. Was initially using the default eye texture with default teal tint, which looks way too saturated IMO. I ended up using a custom texture here. It looks lighter than I expected but I guess it actually looks good that way ?

_Loc_N_lol_: Welcome Lydiel, Adorable but Deadly #... Um... Is it 4 now?

Neria rocks! She looks interestingly different, yet cute, sweet, & compassionate at the same time!

'Braveheart' Theron looks like Hero potential.

Alan looks like a charismatic, likable guy! Maybe he can eventually become a charismatic leader.

Elvalia, please spit out the Ham. Don't hold it in your Mouth for your Pic.

Petehog: You did great with that Legionnaire, but I can see that horrid side-effect on the Cheek area caused by the Beard. Is it impossible to do anything about it even in the Toolset?

My Avatar Representative started out with a Beard in the original Build, & he spent months looking like a skull-headed elder. I sought to fix that once I could deal with him in-game or in the Toolset, but it took so long to build my new Computer, that I ran outta patience & switched to Stubble. I can't imagine my Main with a Beard anymore. I dunno if Beards are worth the trouble until BioWare finds a way for Beards to 'hug' the Face just like how Stubble does, instead of it's current looking like a Prop Shop Beard.

There is a wierd issue where if you choose a particular beard style, it will place the cheeks at a certain shape despite the fact that I did not instruct it to do so. Even if I remove the beard, change the cheeks and then place the beard back, it will give it an odd shape.

Loc_n_Lol: best version of Lydiel yet, I think. Can't necessarily think of anything for Neria, Theron, or Alan. On Elvalia, I'd narrow-ify the nostrils a bit and tweak something on the cheeks / jaw. otherwise all solid designs :)

I would say the easiest races to design are definitely female and male elves.

Eh I dunno about that. To me humans are the easiest (because the reference material is right there, everywhere, and you get more options to toy with unique shapes, features, and mods), then dwarf and elf males, then dwarf and elf females. To each their own opinion. :P
Anyway, that's one tough and mean looking dwarf you got there. Of course the problem with male dwarves is you can't adjust the jaw and cheek features if you give them a beard, and you almost always want to give a beard to a proper dwarf...

@Tyrax
Err... thanks [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/joyful.png[/smilie] but...

Elvalia, please spit out the Ham. Don't hold it in your Mouth for your Pic.

Wut ? [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/wondering.png[/smilie]
You mean she has a sadface or something ?

@drewj1988

Overall, looks fine to me. I'm going to second the others and say the chin looks a little sharp, so you may want to widen it a tiny bit and/or move the slider for square jaw back closer to zero. Nose looks somewhat weird because the bridge is thicker than the tip, did someone smash her nose long ago ? :P

@Wyldsong

Great tatoo on your dwarf. Big props if it's yours. It works well with his eye color BUT, I think both are oversaturated (that's the default teal eye texture I assume ?), so if  you can tweak that I'd suggest using something more tame in terms of saturation, without necessarily changing the color hue.

@YK
Elissa: I'm not fond of that hair so I'm just gonna pretend she's bald :P. Overall facial structure looking good. The nose looks a bit thin to me (on the nostrils especially, should be about the width of an eye, but she has larger than average eyes). The tatoo and lipstick seem to be at 100% opacity, personnally, as a general rule I like to make these no more than 80% because I think it blends better with the face.
No much to say about Rhaelyn but I see a glimpse of your Leliana on that one pic. Better angle than on the previous pic weeks ago, she's good.

@Petehog's random knightly NPC

What's up with the red cheeks ? Too much kid face texture on this one ? :happy:
Other than that, looks Petey-alright. Not your most noteworthy design but still miles ahead of watever it will replace.
Really lovely female elf on the previous page, though.

@Schratty

Charlotte's very pretty, big props. It's funny but your designs have something reminiscent of Petehog's. Maybe it's because of the eye textures you use and somewhat similar eye shapes ?

L_n_L: I have been thinking today that Elissa's makeup is a bit strong, and I'll see how the nose / eye changes work for her. Thankies on Leliana :) I'm gonna give tmp7704's hair a go on her though.

Went back and made some adjustments to the red tone of the cheeks. Also added some wrinkles to make him look a bit more mature.

Petehog: Yup, I know about the issue. It turned me off from Beards in the end & made me a Stubble guy.

_Loc_N_lol_: What I mean about 'spit out the Ham' is that when a Character looks like their cheeks are poofing out in a pudgy way on a Face that does not look pudgy-headed, & is not smiling, then it looks like a normal Face is holding 1/2 a solid Ham in the mouth to force the Cheeks to stay oddly poofed out like that, & I was just trying to be funny & jestful about it. I'm no Jay Leno... I tried the same thing a couple of Pages ago, & it didn't work there either. Perhaps it's a failed idea for a joke.

@ _Loc_N_lol_: Thanks a bunch :) Well, I'd be lying if I said the similarity wasn't partially done by design. I use the Redesigned mod and am a big fan of Petehog's morphs. In light of this, I try - at least a little bit - to make my pcs look like they "fit in" with other characters in the mod. So, I generally use the same texture pack and whatnot ;)

Those are some mighty fine looking elves! The two that stand out the most (to me anyway) are Lydiel and Neria. Lydiel's eye texture is full of win as far as I'm concerned. She has a very dignified look to her face - very nice. I really like Neria's nose, and the color palette you've selected as far as her skintone, hair, eyes, and make-up go - striking and wonderful! Awesome job on all counts :)

@ Petehog: I like the changes you've made. He definitely doesn't look quite as fresh-fashed and innocent anymore. Well done :)

I just want to say that the quality of everyones designs is really awesome right now, and this thread is steaming along at a rate of knots.

As one of the peeps that's been posting here for quite a long time now, I don't think it's ever been as good as it is right now. We have so many talented designers here.

Good news is that some time next week I will be able to start making designs again. My new computer will be ready by then with a bit of luck.

@ Petehog - I really like your new design :) he has a wonderful charm, your male characters are just so good!

Your dwarf is nice. Dwarves are fun to make, but to make them stand out is a challenge. I find humans are definitely easiest to design. I have recently experimented with making slightly darker more menacing human males, and I feel there is just a lot more to work with than with elves.

@ LNL - I like all those designs, but I think Lydiel is my favorite. She is a great example of your personal style, and shes pretty! very nice work!

@ YH - Elissa looks absolutely stunning in that first pic! wow she has a beautiful face, the eyes are perfectly done!

@ Wyldsong - I like how you integrated the scalp tattoo on your dwarf. It works well. I'd like to give that mod a try myself soon.

Elissa, the Ebon Reaver I think is my best H design.

@Loc - The eyes are actually a texture, from either Plane's or Bidelle's. Wolfheart also suggested they might be too much, so I may do another rendition without the texture. As for your creations, I gotta say, I really like Lydiel the most, you did a good job of capturing that look of natural beauty. I like.

@Mochen - Definitely give those scalp tats a look see. Wolf did some good work on them.

Welp, fiddling with the toolset, made a woodsy kinda elf. I just installed the toolset, and spent about 40 minutes in it and came up with unamed female elf. heh.

Eeep, stupid CC and this site that made Skadi's eyes all überslanted! I changed it with a .mor but the site is SOOO slow in updating the pic. I need to change my avatar D: Edit: Hmm, Gerdr's avatar pic looks okay.

@yasuraka.hakkyou
I thought DE's were supposed to have white-ish hair? :3 Amazing character tho, feature-wise!

@Wyldsong
*basks* Wiiie :D
Loving those pics of Rastan in the Proving <3

@drewj1988
You got some good advise already, however if you do use a blend of the female and elf complexions - KEEP IT if you want to!
I use that on most of my female humans/elves since the female one gives everyone a huge amount of eyeliner and also makes the edges of the lips very prominent.
Posted Image
This is one of my preset remakes. The first pic has a fem/elf-blend, while the "No Blend" version is all female complexion. My bf do prefer the No Blend but personally I much prefer the Blend one. It's just tastes, so don't let anyone tell you exactly what to use and not use! I think you pulled the blend off really good.

@Petehog

The tat you chose for the dwarf gives his cheeks a horrible sickly look. First I thought they were actually extremely gaunt, but then I saw the tat and went "ahaaa". So, another tat and he would look less sick.

@_Loc_N_lol_
Hellows!
Let's seeee
Lydiel - I like the eyes O: Very elven and cute too <3
Neria - Yep, I like the werewolf-eyes-and-ponytail version the most! That char is... wonderful <3
Theron - eeep, a good looking elf male <3 I am so totally in love with your designs, can you tell?
Alan - O_O *dies a little* Marry me, pretty boy!
Elvalia - Different! In a good way. I would perhaps prefer a slight changed nose-bridge (more "out") and I do think the eyes are a bit too light. Just a tad darker color on the eyes and I would loooove her tho! Loving the cheeks btw :3 No ham here, no-oh! If THAT is considered "puffy cheeks" then I dunno what the hell is wrong with people's view on anatomy xD

@Schratty
I would love that design with another eye texture. Something deep and "longing"-ish you know?

@neppakyo
I would drag the corners of the mouth down a bit, the smile looks ss unnatural otherwise. Also, normal eyes would suit her so much better :3

Hehe, yeah playing with mor files ain't fun.. I wish in the toolset you could rotate the head easier than changing vaules for the camera..

I need some cat eyes for elves.. real elves have cat pupils for eyes! Your human is lookin good, I think long hair would suit her more, but just my opinion :D

Hold Ctrl and the right mouse button while dragging the mouse around :3 Then you move the camera around the head. If you hold Shift instead you rotate the head but not the camera :3

 @ _Loc_N_lol_ - Ooh, I really enjoy all of your creations. Especially Lydiel, she's a cutie! ^_^
@ Tyrax - Hehe, I love Ghoulia! XD I laughed a bit too loud IRL after seeing that picture, ha!
I'm having a hard time with my (future) blood mage. I'm going for more of a seductive, sinister look. And maybe this is just me (I've been staring at the screen for faaar too long), but she seems a bit... plain? I dunno, everyone else seems to have unique looking characters and my mage doesn't seem to fit the bill imho:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Obviously I need to give her some hair, hehe. I know I should probably be beaten senseless for even considering this, but I am leaning towards that big curly barbie-ish hair:

Posted Image

Or even the shorter angled bob hairstyle?:

Posted Image

I dunno, I feel the longer hair goes well with type of character she is. But that's just me!

I think the Barbie hair suits her just fine :3 If YOU like it, ignore the haters :3
As for the unique/bland thing... well. Most people use specific features or tats to make their chars stand out. And since your girl doesn't have such things, she might seem bland to some people. For me tho, she's amazing :) Maybe just give her a little more jaw (downwards, not wider) and she'll be good to go :3

Edit:

Wasn't too happy with Zhen, so here is her daughter Xiang ^^

_Loc_N_lol_: You got it, even if I have to reload my last Save to get more chances of catching it. It's bound to be epic!

Schratty: It might take awhile to get more Screens of Ghoulia, since i'm still on Salona's Log atm, but who knows? I might switch between Logs if I need a change of pace from time to time.

Crevan is interesting. He looks like a once alright lookin guy maimed a bit, it gives him backstory & character!

Ya can call Ghoulia as ugly as ya want. She thinks as nothing about being an outsider as Morrigan & Flemeth do. Though... Considering she's stuck in an arranged meeting... One has to wonder if her arranged husband should be pitied. I wonder if he'll rethink his moral views on the concept of 'Arranged Marriage' after he sees her? Especially since she's a Rogue. (She sure puts the 'Night' into Nightstalker!)

neppakyo: She rocks! You seem to know your Elves, unlike me. Ya've seen my 1st Toolset go at an Elf! Mind ya, i'm still finding her cool.

sailorsaturnz: Many thanks! Ghoulia's working out so well, she's gonna be my 1st Rogue! The stealth world will never be the same...

For your Blood Mage, I think both Hair's work. The longer Hair makes her look like a ladylike Character, & the short Hair makes her look like a serious-minded Tomboy. I say pick the Hair that gave the impression you more desire for her design, or try a new Hair & continue experimentation.

VirusCat: Xiang looks like a formal, by-the-book, serious person, a cutie that can't exert her full cuteness through all her workaholic personality. She looks good to me, but I don't fully know your plan.

Edit: Oh, almost forgot, I managed to make Ghoulia look awesome in her Portrait Pic, & the best viewing of it is on her Character Page, check it out here! It's cool!
