Tennant's run toward the end went rather dark and they were constantly demonstrating how the Doctor bore the weight of the entire universe on his shoulders. It's a good theme to cover, but I was glad to see it end.

We still saw a bit of that idea in "The Beast Below".
But yes, I saw a review of "The Eleventh Hour" which pointed out that towards the very start we get...
Pond: "Don't have a mom and dad... just an aunt."
Doctor: "I don't even have an aunt."
Pond: "You're lucky."

If it had been Doctor 9 or 10 sitting there, he probably would have gotten a bit mopey and not responded.
11?
Doctor: "I know."

The End of Time I liked too, though obviously the last 10 minutes is the best part.

And any time Timothy Dalton was on screen. Come to think of it I did like The Master. He just like an antithesis to Tennets Doctor. Totally mad but had that goofy silliness.  Maybe it was just his face.

The new Doctors just seem too much like Mary Sue characters over the old ones. The new sidekicks reinforce that. Plus the villains don't seem as scarily ominous by design as they once were. Maybe the authors are trying too hard to sell him to a new audience?

Before anyone says it, the old Doctors were not Mary Sue characters because he always got called on his flaws. Romana would basically tell him what an idiot would do whenever he made a big mistake, Leela defeated the viral alien that the doctor accidentally allowed himself to get infected and K-9 stayed silent when the Doctor cheated after losing at their game of chess. Silence speaks volumes.

re: The tennant specials.

The first two were okay, but they felt like they would have been better off as regular episodes than specials. Waters of Mars was one of the best New Who episodes written by RTD. I actually really liked that one. End of Time had some great moments, but when you added it all up it felt like a missed opportunity. I'm excited to see Ep2 in the US tomorrow. Assuming my cable box doesnt give out again.

As for the new doctors being Mary Sues. I have to disagree. They comment on the Doctor's flaws all the time. Nine gets called out for being a jerk and being arrogant constantly, and while Ten might have had sue-ish moments, he always had big recoil ones as well. (Martha calling out that her family getting caught was his fault. In Waters of Mars he gets called out for being, well, insane.) but I mean to each his own. I certainly prefer certain doctors over others as well. I like 4 and 5 of the classic series the most. Hated 7. Hated 8. 1, 2, 3 were okay, but I haven't watched all their stuff, since the "effects" aged pretty horribly. 6 was okay, but I can't seem to have a strong opinion of him either way.

The end of the waters of mars episode was interesting, usually the
doctor (Tennents) is a pretty smug perfect guy brimming with confidence to the point that
than any sense of threat is usually dissipated. The fact he sounds like a
ranting megalomaniac at the end with the shooting becoming worm food seemed to work well with the characters
persona making him seem less two dimensional for a breif moment.

I would have totally restructured the last 4 specials. They should have moved Waters of Mars up earlier and had him run around as the Time Lord Triumphant! for a bit longer.

Anyone here see the Time of Angels? Amazing episode, I didn't think the Weeping Angels could be made creepy again, at least within the contex of a two-parter, but they pulled it off.

I saw The Time of Angels on Saturday.

For the most part it was pretty creepy. There were only a few bits I thought were kind of corny and not creepy, but they don't ruin the mood. Good cliffhanger too, I'm definitely watching next weeks part two.

Haha when it ended and I saw it was a cliffhanger I almost cried lol. I do not want to wat a week to see what happens.

The whole thing with River Song hurts my head sometimes. But I know we will learn the truth at some point lol.

I'm quite pleased with the Eleventh Doctor, even if I have to fight upstream through the Tenth Doctor fans.

I'm sure I'd like him but I just haven't kept up with the show like I should.

...and Billie Piper is still the hottest girl they've had in recent years.

Disagree.  Freema Agyeman is fiercely attractive.

classic Doctor Who fan also, love watching the original Black and White episodes. I am looking forward to the DVD release of the 1996 movie now that they finally got the distribution right for North America cleared up.

I wish Paul McGann had gotten a second bite at that particular cherry. He was so right for that part.
