The new run... it's ok. It's not the old-school Doctor, but it's still pretty entertaining. Ecclestone was fairly good at it, and thus far, Smith isn't the worst there's been. As far as I'm concerned, that goes to Tennant. Could not stand him; started off so strongly, then ended up this sentimental, simpering something. No edge at all.
I swear, if he said "I am so sorry" one more time, I'd have had his leg... <_<

I wish Paul McGann had gotten a second bite at that particular cherry. He was so right for that part.
Well he got a second chance with the Doctor Who Audio Adventures from Big Finish, he actually did a pretty good job at making the role his own. They also do new Audios with Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvestor McCoy. Colin really is relishing the second chance with the audios and honestly these audio plays kick his TV run's butt.

Baker Mk. 2 wasn't too bad, but I was oggling Perry more than really paying attention.
I can't begin to imagine why...

I was also very pleased with Paul McGann's interpretation of the character. Somewhat sorry that he only got the one movie, but who knows what they would have done with that series considering it was going to be network television. And FOX at that. Like that he did make the character his own in the end, and I suppose the audio adventures made him the longest continuous running doctor of them all.wolfsite wrote...

I wish we had seen more of Ecclestone. His version of the doctor intrigued me, holding that weight of some catastrophic war but without all that heavy-handedness about just how catastrophic and lonely and tragic it all was. So yeah, I started off liking Tennant, but by the time they were doing the last of the Tenth Doctor specials, I was so ready to see him go. I was just about ready to hate it all.Mondo47 wrote...

I like Smith so far, but that might have a lot more to do with the reboot to the series with the new showrunner, trying to step away from the melodrama that was the Tenth Doctor's story. A lot more references to previous doctors. A lot more fun. But it probably says something that I'm more interested in River Song's story at the moment than I am about the Doctor's. So jury is still out, I suppose.

I love Dr Who. I grew up with Pertwee, Baker and Davidson. They were my Doctors, and always shall be. Baker Mk. 2 wasn't too bad, but I was oggling Perry more than really paying attention. McCoy though brought the magic back for me; he could be sweet and cuddly one minute, and the next be sinister and brooding. Easily one of my favorites.

Sounds like you're the same vintage as me Mondo. My favourite will always be Tom Baker though.
I just couldn't get into Paul McGanns doctor, When I see him I only see him as the drunken actor in 'Withnail and I'
I did like Christopher Eccelstone's portrayal, he was quite serious in comparison to what we're seeing now.
As for David Tennant I didn't like him at first but he grew on me. I was really worried about Matt Smith taking over because he looked so young (maybe I'm getting old too quick!) a friend of mine even refered to him as "the child doctor" but I have to say he's grown on me.
