How much harder is Insanity vs Hardcore?

I'm running thru Hardcore to get myself ready for my insanity run, and I just finished Horizon. I'm playing as a Sentinel, and so far, Hardcore is actually easier for me than Veteran was with my Vanguard and Infiltrator playthrus. I died a couple of times on the first Harbinger fight (I was down to only one medigel, and Miranda kept dying. Without her second Warp it was a bit harder than I think it should have been), but otherwise, Horizon was pretty easy, even the two Scion fight and the Praetorian fight. I'm not using my tech armor as much as I should (compared to the videos I've seen) so that's not it. I think the Sentinel just fits my playstyle better, much to my surprise. So, what should I look forward to on Insanity once this playthru is over with? Obviously, it'll be harder, but how much harder is it, really?

Literally.

Honestly? I can't tell the difference between Hardcore and Insanity.

Not much... although the difference between NG+ Insanity and Insanity is painful.
True, I did my first insanity run as an NG+ soldier and it definitely kicks your ass early on until you start getting some upgrades. The single hardest part of my first inanity run was the final fight on Mordin's recruitment mission simply because I had so few upgrades and it was so easy to screw up and get mowed down by some random Vorcha which is exacerbated by the fact that you don't get any save opportunities until you beat it. Now that I've got the achievement when I play NG+ I generally play hardcore until after Horizon then I crank it up to insanity.
One big plus I'd mention in favor of insanity over hardcore is that a lot of the bosses have unique behaviors on insanity that make fighting them a lot more interesting. Captain Wassea for example will fling some crates which open up an entirely new part of the level, while the final boss will start destroying parts of the platform you're standing on.

Wha? That's only on insanity?
(I wouldn't know ... I've never played on anything else)

The reaper one might be unique to insanity, i never killed it slow enough on other difficulties to tell, ran outta ammo on insanity and had to wait for harbinger to come drop boxes for me, so it took a while >_>
Honestly, I don't think insanity is that much harder than hardcore, the bosses are buffed heaps but everything else felt about the same to me. I went from hardcore vanguard to insanity infiltrator though, maybe the playstyle difference made it seem easier than it was.

From my own experience, insanity-level enemies do more damage as well as taking less damage themselves.

That can happen on lower difficulties too if you don't take her out fast enough.

Oh, and I'm not about to do a NG+ on insanity for my first run. I've heard horror stories. I'll start a new Shep for that one.

- enemies have about 20% more health
- Shepard has about 15% less health
- enemy power cooldowns are about 15% shorter
- friendly power duration is about 10% less
- enemies get 75 points more protection
- enemies are more accurate (EnemyAimMultiplier = 0.6 for HC, 0.4 for Insanity; apparently lower number is harder because it's 1.0 on Normal)
Other settings I don't know the meaning of but are different for HC and Insanity, are
- BreachDuration = 0.75 for HC, 0.5 for Insanity
- MaxTargetTickets = 5 for HC, 6 for Insanity

New Game+ Insanity is a Level 25-30 character who has beaten the ME2 Story.
NG+ Insanity is generally harder because enemy offense and skill is keyed to your level. In NG+, all upgrades are stripped away, and you have to get them back. You therefore have enemies who are strong enough to deal solid damage to a character that is fully upgraded, but you don't have the upgrades they're expecting, so they tear through you much more quickly. Once you get a decent amount of upgrades (which generally happens after Horizon), things become much easier.

Honestly, I'm getting to the point where I just start games on the highest difficulty and don't change it. Rather than get bad habits that I have to break on the higher difficulties, I get good habits that make me that much meaner if I decide to play on a lower difficulty. There's more of a learning curve, but I don't have to unlearn anything later.
I wish I could play like this, but I'm not that great at "twitch" type games, like shooters. I like ME's combat, it's intensely satisfying when I pull off a perfect flanking maneuver, etc, but I can't hit the side of the proverbial barn when shooting. I have a hard time lining up headshots with the Widow on an Infiltrator even with the time dilation. So, Insanity for me would be no fun if I tried it first. I usually play thru these games on a lower difficulty to see the story, how the plot turns out, then slowly up the difficulty if it's a game I want to replay (like ME).
Yeah, that means I have to unlearn certain ways of playing (like using no tactics on Normal/Veteran, not relying on my squadmates as much as I should, etc) and I have to learn tactics that work on higher difficulties (like the Geth Prime fight on Haestrom I mentioned earlier. I had to figure out where to put my squad so they wouldn't die in the first 5 seconds, where I should be to be most effective, etc.) but I just can't jump into insanity. I'm just not naturally good enough.

I guess they designed Insanity well then. Not everyone is supposed to be able to even play through it... it's there to provide a challenge to those who find lower difficulties simply too easy.

The early game is the most difficult. I almost gave up on Jack's recruitment mission.
I tried Insanity with a Vanguard. Man, that was a pain! I actually dumbed it down to Hard core, and then stepped it back to insanity once I go the hang of it. Vanguard is not an easy class to play.
I was to try Insanity with my adept next. Adept was my first hardcore run through, and after trying Eng/Adept/Sent and now Vangaurd, Adept was by far the most rewarding for me.

THANK YOU.
I'm doing my first insanity run with an adept (also the first time with an adept) and I'm halfway through the game. I've still never met a challenge like Jack's recruitment. I must have reloaded fifteen times before I finally beat it. It's good to know I'm not completely crazy and other people had difficulty with that level.
I never felt like I was going to give up though. I always felt like I was just close enough and I just had to change tactics a little. The one mission I did feel like I was going to give up, which wasn't as hard once I figured out what I could do to beat it, was the final battle in Horizon.
For some reason I never use heavy weapons. I always forget I have them and it takes me about ten reloads before I realize, wait, what if I tried this with a heavy weapon. Well horizon was no different. On insanity, that final battle is scary. The two abominations can two shot kill me, and all the zombies have armor so i can't throw them away to save myself. Every single time I tried (I had Mordin and Grunt with me) my two teammates would die in the first 15 seconds of battle, and I'd get mauled to death. And when I tried to run for it, I'd get hit with a shockwave, knock backed for long enough for them to catch up to me, get mauled and knocked back long enough to get hit by a second shockwave, and then die.
Then I whipped out my arc projector and toasted everything but the two abominations as I ran around in circles from the very beginning of the fight, and all of the sudden it only took me two more tries.
The moral of my story is that, for me at least, the difference between insanity and hardcore was using everything at my disposal. I played a Vanguard on normal, an infiltrator and sentinel on hardcore, and now an adept on insanity. And all the playthroughs that weren't on insanity I rarely, if ever, used unity or heavy weapons. On insanity, I can't imagine surviving without using unity at least once every "level" and the majority of my heavy weapon ammo before the level is complete.

I think I've figured out the safest method of doing that mission (have a video in sig), but it can still be hair-raising at times if I get too confident/aggressive.
