It kinda depends what class you're playing. The first time I was playing a drwarven 2-handed warrior, and Wynne was in my party pretty much all the time. The other spots were occupied variably by Leliana, Shale, Dog, Alistair and Oghren... sometimes Morrigan, but not too often and Zevran even more rarely. Didn't use Sten at all on my first playthrough.

Now I'm playing a mage, and have Sten, Shale and Wynne in my party (I'm at the mage's tower so that's why Wynne). I won't probably use Wynne as much this time around, and I intend to use the characters I used less the first time around, with the possible exception of Shale, who's my tank this time around, and seems to be doing a pretty good job of it.

My current preference is PC warrior, Alistair (although any of the other fighters will do depending on how I feel at the time), Leliana (bow, locks, looks and character), Wynne (healing, haste, telekintetic weapons).

For my DW rogue I went with Shale (defensive), Sten (offensive) and Morrigan (crowd control) for a more ruthless bunch.

I've always wondered about telekinetic weapons, how effective are they?

Don't know whether it's highly effective or not, but my impression is that bosses go down more easily. Anybody have the mechanical breakdown out there?

According to the wiki:
Armor Penetration Bonus: ( Spellpower / 7 ) up to a maximum of 12.5  With 2h warriors getting a 25% bonus
I always thought it was better than either of the elemental weapons but I guess that depends on the armor of the enemy.

Come to think of my groups, I almost always have Alistair (tank) and Leliana (bow / locks), regardless of my PC class, with either Sten or Oghren if I'm a mage or Wynne or Morrigan if I'm not.

First playthrough (normal): Dwarf Warrior. I underestimated the value of dexterity, so for a long time I didn't have a decent tank. Eventually I took on the role myself. Mostly teamed with Leliana (as an archer) and Wynne. Third slot was taken by whatever character was locked in or seemed appropriate for the current quest.

Second playthrough (hard): Human Rogue. Handles every locked chest, always succeeds at persuading, discovers and disarms nearly every trap. Love this character. Anyway, I digress. In the beginning, I used Shale for tank (recruited right after Lothering) and also used both Morrigan (with Heal) and Wynne. Massive overkill; got a bit bored with it eventually, because most fights could be done half-asleep. So I let Alistair take over the tanking, had Sten help out with damage, and used only Wynne for healing. Worked out alright. Then my Rogue got stronger, and I find myself recklessly charging Ogre Alphas (i.e if someone wants to tank, he has to catch up first). Whether fights are organized or gloriously messy, I expect Wynne to keep everyone alive - and (aside from the rare instances with nasty DoT or AoE spells from mages) she does. Wynne is awesome.

The usual suspects:

Warden: ( Arcane warrior / Blood Mage) For killing anything attacking tank, usually rogues.

Allistair: (Champion / Templar) Main Tank

Shale: Secondary Tank, I throw her in when I get tired of Allistairs whining. Not very good at taking the heat off my warden though.

Wynne: (Spirit Healer / Shapeshifter) Healing & Buffs, plus shapeshifter for really desperate fights.

Leliana: (Bard / Duelist) Lockpicking, scouting, archery, secondary tank-defender-person. If my warden falls, Leliana makes a good back-up.

Morrigan: Secondary spell caster, Morrigan has almost the exact same spells as my warden (Entropy, Primal, and a few spirit), so I use her only once in a great while, usually to hear her dialog.
