I plan to use morrigan during my first playthrough.  I heard something along the lines of "Morrigan gets mad when you help people and Leliana wants you to help people."  Now on my first playthrough I plan on doing as many sidequests as I can, I hope she doesn't get pissed and leave because of that.

I guess I'm concerned about the "companion loyalty" mechanic.  I hope it's a complex mechanic and not as simple as mentioned above.  And yes, I know there are gifts to earn love or whatever it is... Can anyone link the page that has the character info pictures with the +/- loyalty explanation.

If you're a hardcore RPer and you want to get the experience just perfectly, how about this:

Don't do sidequests just for the sake of doing sidequests. Pick a personality for your character. If he wouldn't help that person (no likely reward, he -wants- the person to suffer, indifference, etc), don't make him.

It'll make it much more fulfilling when Morrigan gets angry because he does help someone and when Leliana gets angry because he doesn't.

Im a bit worried about this to. Im planning to take Morrigan along, in my first playthrough, as my party's mage, but like you want to do as many side quests as possible. Welll... hopefully i'll be able to dazzle her with a unholy amount of gifts, or she'll be susceptible to my PC's high coercion level.

is this the link you wanted?

I'm more into game (quests) and  story (dialogue) than "roleplaying" a character.  I plan on taking different sets of companions and using them throughout the game during each playthrough.

So what I've gathered from your last sentence is that you DO believe the companion loyalty mechanic will be that simple?

I think this is the page you're looking for Halfcab: link

I don't think just the simple fact that you accept a side quest should upset or please someone; more likely it's how you accomplish it.  For instance I kept Bishop in my party throughout NWN2 and undertook every single side quest, and maintained a higher influence with him than with any other companion.  I'm guessing you can help somone for several different reasons (morality vs. money) and have that taken into consideration.
Anyway, I love party mechanics so I can't wait to see how it all plays out.

I'm not particularly worried about it seeing as how some angry banter between Morrigan and the PC might be fun to read. I doubt she'd leave the party over a few sidequests though.

And she might not be bothered by sidequests at all depending on the choices you make during them.

I think you'll miss out on alot if you don't take companions along, but if thats how you enjoy playing, I don't think you have to take companions with you if you don't want to.
Heres what David Gaider said about it, link

I think you might be able to turn people down. Like Zevran for example. Apparently he tries to kill you then when you beat him askes to join. I am guessing you could probably say no. However Alistair and Morrigan are supposed to be integral to the main sotry line so I don't know how or if you will even be able to get them to quit your party. It might only be optional characters that you can get mad at you...

But alistar sounds forced on me by duncan in the narrative gameplay they show him saying when your ready seek out a young grey warden recruit.I know it doesnt say anything about forcing him on me but seems like im not gonna get rid of him till the end of the battle of ostagar.

You can choose what party you leave camp with - even if you're forced to have someone in your party, you can just have them cool their heels while you go do everything solo.

yup but it would be nice to not have them there at all to tempt me to use them when things get a little hard.

You're playing on Easy. I don't think you'll have any problems.

Solo in a game that is suppose to be easy for a party of 4 and the reviews and devs say on some parts will be pretty hard even on easier difficulties....i do think im gonna have a problem or two making this game very hard and also i may mess my character up since its my first playthrough........

I think that Black Gimoire has Morrigan's name on it.

Mix your party members up throughout gameplay. Remember, they all have their own individual quests.

On the other hand, wouldn't it be simplistic in itself just to throw a bunch of stuff at a companions way to keep them around? Maybe I'm over analyzing but I'm hoping it's more complex than giving your companions phat lewtz to keep their loyalty.

The number of gifts is limited and they have diminishing returns. So no you can't buy love if they have grown to hate you.

I wonder if it's possible to maintain friendly relationships with every party member during one gameplay. Friendly enough to get quests, and be able to choose a romance, eventually.

So long as when they scold you for your actions you respond in a way they like and mix up who you support when they get into arguments with eachother I imagine you'll likely be able to keep your party members from leaving, but getting quests and having romances tends to require a pretty good relationship, so not sure about that.

Well, maybe I'll be able to pump those relationships up with a gift or two when something goes wrong. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.
It's not really significant, anyway, as I plan to beat the game with every origin.

Given Bioware's history of providing their players ample choices in their games. I think its quite possible to do all the side quests in a manner that Morrigan would approve off. For instance lets say you get a side quest to go slaughter a band off bandits nearby that are plaguing a local community.

Morrigan would probably disapprove if you just went and drove them off and saved the day like a knight in shining armor, but I'd be surprised if Bioware didn't add and evil option to it as well. Like for instance. Persuading the bandits to pay you "taxes" for operating in the area. And if you fail that persuasion and have to kill them anyway, you can go back to that local community and have them pay you "protection money".
