I tried an insanity run a while back and was honestly so frustrated with it that I abandoned it entirely even while trying to pick up Mordin. I recently decided to try again

...and have found it one of the more fun and interesting classes to play once I figured out how to do it in a way that suits me.

I'll say up front that I'll never be able to do one of those (admittedly awsome) trophy YouTube videos. There have been a couple spots where I've thinned out heavily populated areas by one or two with the Locust just to give myself a little leeway in my home position when starting the charge spams.

I have pulled off some awesome moves though. In order to get anywhere I've really had to change how I play because the other classes are about crowd control and Vanguard's are really only about one thing: position. Where you are and where you want to be two charges from now.

If you can domino them though you just completely destroy the battlefield in a way no other class can. Since every enemy basically locks on to Shep chaining one position change after another puts them in disarray just doing it.

And since your teammates position changes pretty quickly relative to yours they become more devastating by being able to unleash hell inside enemy lines rather than it just being a straight up fight of attrition on the fringes. Kasumi has been a freaking death dealer in this regard.

And pumping a shotty point blank into an enemy and watching them burn is its own reward. :)

I still die sometimes, but I don't have that "I'll never be able to do this." feeling that i did the first time.

So, I'm a confirmed Vanguard fan. Certainly was more fun to me than my soldire playthrough which seems to me just Matrix "bullet time"---shoot, bullet time--shoot. In fairness I have yet to do a soldier insanity run so maybe that'll change.

But I love playing as a Vanguard right now---- and I never thought I'd say that.

right-click someone's vanguard sig, click copy image location, then paste to your sig with [img*][/img*] tags without asterisks

Unlike most people, I actually don't find Vanguards very fun. I've beaten the majority of the game on an insanity vanguard and I didn't have much problmes beating levels while also playing very aggresively. I also love playing agressively, but I just don't have a lot of fun playing the Vanguard.

I am with you tommyt, it's a great class. But I don't enjoy it very much.

I have more fun playing a vanguard and charging with the SMG ... 'cos it's full of giggles.

Playing a Vanguard now. Since my favourite classes so far have been the Infiltrator and Adept, it's taken more than a bit of mental adjustment. I died a lot on Omega getting the hang of things, but dying isn't so bad on Vanguard because it happens so fast :D That's the one thing I've noticed-- you either destroy everything like a great wind, or everything destroys YOU.

But it's getting addictive. I am really looking forward to the Claymore.

I recently started a vanguard and it's fun, but I have to get used to the 'agressive' playstyle.

What do you guys think is the better bonus skill? I thought I'll pick something like Barrier or Geth Shield, but the cooldows clash with charge =/

Well, I took Barrier ... not 'cos I use it, but there are those times when Shep says "can't get a lock" and then dies moments later.

So I use barrier as the "FU I'm not gonna die 'cos you fail at pathing" button.

But if you're thinking of a power that complements a vanguard's abilities, I actually suggest slam. (Reave is probably the most effective, but it's OP and effectively cheating). Vs. tough foes at close range, such as YMIRs, you can just lock it down with slam's 3s cooldown. Vs. foes at range (that you can't charge to), use slam just to stagger them, shoot off their defenses, and let your ammo power CC them.

I played as solider in Mass effect 1, and replayed it as a Vanguard because biotics seemed to be such a large part of the game I would feel guilty if I didn't play with them too. ;)

In the original I enjoyed the vanguard class, in the second installment I found the class hard to play, perhaps the addition of ammo use and one cooldown timer for all powers made it more difficult to lay waste to enemies, instead majority of the game is spent crouching behind a shipping crate.

However, once you were able to use barrier the battles became much more aggressive, not having to hide and wait for your shield to restore.

I can vouch for Slam as well. It can also set up Warp explosions so you can essentially ignore Pull and Shockwave if you really wanted to.
