Kinda bummed, I purchased download from EA last night , installed fine, but game crashes after splash screen. I hit play, it tries to configure, then I get eror saying configuration utility stopped working and program stops working. Am I hosed?

Why not try the Legacy Bioware Forums, where ME-1 for the PC has all of the old messages archived.  That is, if you ran a search here and didn't find anything already. 

There were plenty of local hits for Mass Effect:

I can run the game on 7. Run the game in Windows XP compatible mode as administrator. Make sure you meet the system requirements. (Many people ignore that part.)

ME1 runs fine on my 64-bit Win 7 Home Premium, even without compatibility.The OS is not the problem.

Same here, I just installed ME1 and it worked great without any tweaking. And I run the 64 bit version of Pro! Adobe + 64 bit has been tons of trouble, but was mostly sorted before I got around to installing games. I also have all my drivers updated, and made sure they were Vista/Win 7 drivers.

I also run ME downloaded from the EA store. IIRC Mass Effect crashed to desktop when I first tried to run it on my Windows 7 Pro 64-bit system. Once I installed the 1.2 patch for ME the game ran fine.

EDIT:  Wow.  Took me a while to find the 1.02 patch on BioWare's website.

I have no idea what you're talking about, except maybe that your configuration utility isn't working?

I'm going to confirm that the 1.02 patch will make work. Thanks to cutmeister who suggested it.
