I have now spent an hour reading various forums on this problem and nothing seems to work. I've tried turing User accounts off, tried running as admin, tried going into program files and launching from the executables in the ME folder directly, but NOTHING WORKS! I still get the same message regardless of how i try to launch the game:

"Mass Effect Has Stopped Working: A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

Of course windows won't find a solution and all the forums out there seem to have solutions that do not work for me. I am running Windows VISTA
NVIDIA 7950 GX2
2gigs ram
Intel Pentium D 3Ghz

Frustrated that I have to spend an hour on my Sunday troubleshooting a game i just paid for.

I learned something new from Victor Wachter last week that I just do not know why it hasn't become better known information.  When you allow Microsoft to collect an error report, it is going to end up going back to the program developers, besides to Microsoft, so it's not such a waste of time to say Yes to that dialog box after all.

It was a port from an Xbox360 game, and EA supervised the port.  Bioware didn't handle it, and I do not recall the company -- wait, yes I do, it was Demiurge.

As to forums for ME-1, the best of them was closed when ME-2 was released, it was the Legacy forum on Bioware's old "pre-Social" forums.  You need to visit there.  The search is much better than the amateur version here (but you really have tried using the Search here, correct?)

meforums.bioware.com/viewforum.html

Yes, the old forums are inactive in the sense you cannot reply any longer, or start new messages there, but the archives are all readily available for reference.

Have you tried repairing the installation? Or perhaps just uninstalling and reinstalling all over again?

Make sure your Antivirus software isn't interfering with the repair or install.

If you don't have any AV software, you might have some malware or a virus that is mucking things up.

For you Win 7 users, try checking compatibility mode to run the game. (Sorry to deter from your OP bitto)

Ok Just go and visit this website, if your system doesn't pass then i'm afraid the game has to wait for the new system.

ANYONE READING THAT BAD ADVICE!  Ignore it.

SR Labs' results are so inaccurate that they are a laughing stock.  Anyone suggesting someone else should go there is being a Troll, hoping to upset you when the foolishness from there  bites you in the behind.

What's interesting is I'm running Windows 7 on a DELL laptop, Inspirion 1564, and when I go into properties for ME  (or anything else) I don't have a compatibility tab, I have everything but that, and instead I have a web document  tab.
I'm having the same issue as everyone else, I've tried  re-installing, and I'm running it off of Steam so I've tried running Steam as admin but still no dice.

This is a PC Game tech discussion forum.  "Me, too" has no validity here.  Consoles are all the same, PCs are not.

Reporting a Problem with Mass Effect 1 PC Version:
http://social.biowar...1/index/2012975

Including adequate information in a problem report, ME-2:

It is now a day later, and the Me, too complaint is the only activity that the new member ever undertook.  It would seem that making a proper report is too much trouble, so I would guess that he / she took momentary advantage of that $5 sale, discovered that PCs are "too complicated", and forgot about his / her "problem".
