Hell I always liked Tali, I exausted just about every conversation with her in the first one. I suppose I chose Tali as my LI for three reasons, one because she has a good personality and  uh... *coughs*  view, two because she was a familiar face in a place where I was expecting to get betrayed further down the road, and third of all because she was quite a step up from the Homicidal maniac (Jack) the consciessless code bound law enforcer (Samara) the asari with a death fetish (Morinth) my secretary (Kelly) and the arrogant, and frankly undiplomitic, self-proclaimed second in commmand (Miranda). I regret nothing and plan on staying with Tali all the way to the bitter end.[/quote

if by good personality u mean like a dog following her master(Shepard) then yea..she is very good..she was far more interesting in ME1 then ME2(loyalty mission excluded)....and well i actually like Jack,Samara and the others..never had Morinth and i dislike Kelly.
Also i am pretty sure Miranda did not self proclaimed herself second in command..more like TIM did that..u know to watch over Shepard...not that i have anything against her beeing my second.
And another thing how is tali a good view..she wears a costume...talimancers seem to think she is pretty based on her suit...dunno how to answer to that...
But...i like Tali just not as much as to not find some criticism on her..and as i said in other threads..she and Ashley were almost always my squad members in ME1

I like Tali for my own reasons, and neither the hyper-fans nor the hyper-haters can spoil that for me. Well, I tend to steer clear of the rant threads so I don't know neither side that much, beyond what spills over to regular threads. Still, I find it funny how a lot of people dislike her just because of the apparantly massive fanbase. Seems like some people can't form their own opinion, but there you go...

What I like about Tali is that she's consistent. She has well defined values and they are consistent from ME1 to ME2. That fact is mostly worth mentioning because of how Liara turned out, I guess. Prior to ME2 I wouldn't have given huge points for not messing up characters for no reason. If they turned Tali into a murdering psychopath in ME2 (or if they're going to do that in ME3) I wouldn't / won't like her anymore either.

In contrast to some other characters she can also be reasoned with. There's this scene between her and Legion and she will even meet him half-way, which has to be a tremendous step for a Quarian. I struggle to make politically correct analogies here, suffice it to say that it's pretty huge. Tali can be made to see that Legion isn't that much different from her in his desire to protect his people.

What appeals to me personally is that she's just a genuinely good person. Her moral values I can subscribe to. She's concerned about more than her immediate gain, as evidenced by her loyalty mission. Yea, it's all the rage to be badass and ****y these days, but that doesn't appeal that much to me. The novelty of being rude and all "in your face" wears thing real fast with me.

The voice actress did a really good job on her, too, but so did most of the VAs.

The character as a whole just makes sense. Everything she does or says fits her personality. That's a huge bonus for me. If you take other Bioware games, there's one companion I can specifically think of that always disapproves when you help *anybody* but then comes crying for your help when that companion has problems of their own. Previous like or dislike aside, stuff like that just doesn't sit well with me. If your attitude is that everyone should take care of their own problems, don't come crying to me for help.

Tali does stuff for good reasons. She joins Shepard in ME1 for good reasons and continues to be loyal to him because he's shown that he's worth it in ME1. (at least my Shepard did, I actually never played that much of a renegade to know whether or not it's possible to be ass enough so that it no longer makes sense that Tali is loyal to Shep.)

She has:

Dem hips.

Nerdy personality.

Thinks Shepard is the best man in the galaxy.

mystery about her identity and she is vulnerable as she's under a suit.

That's why people love her.

I liked Tali in ME1 but thought her story in ME2 was kinda lame. All they did was take Liara's old role of the cute, kinda geeky, sweet romance option and gave it to Tali. Even her story in ME2 mimics Liara's 1) Save her from being trapped by a geth attack on a remote world 2) Console her after the loss of a parent 3) Take her virginity

It would have been nice if BW had given her something original instead of just swapping her into Liara's old role.

I was actually completely neutral about Tali in ME1 and didn't become an active forum member 'til about  a year ago and encountered the rabid Talimancers for the first time.  That made me analyze the character again and I noticed there was a lot there I didn't see at first.  It made me really like her character.  Tali is my femshep's best friend.  She's the only really nice female character who isn't aloof (Samara, Miranda) crazy (Jack) or that doesn't hit on me (Liara.)  Ok, that's not fair, I really like Ash too, but her distrust of aliens means she never works out on my A team as my A team always includes Garrus.  Anyway, Tali's adorable.  She's like a little sister and her tech skills very naturally complement the types of characters I usually play.

On another note, I'm a rabid Garrus fan, and I think Garrus' fate is somewhat tied to Tali's as they are both the big "fan service" LIs.  In that sense, I just think it's natural for people with mutual interests to stick together so I have a tendency to defend the Talimancers because I think "as goes Tali, so goes Garrus."

Yeah I thought Tali deserved better than that, but I suppose with the current target audience they figured most folks wouldn't notice, and it seems they were right.  /shrug Oh well, so long as the Tali fans don't seem to care I suppose its all good, though if I was a "Talimancer" I'd be a little irked by the whole thing.

I'm surprised this thread got this far, usually topics like this end up as stable as the Middle East.

Meh, aside from the few random forum trolls I don't think any one cares enough to full on hate particular characters anymore.  Few months ago you are right, this thread would have went down in flames.

Personally I don't hate anyone on my squad in from ME1 and 2, not even Jacob, who for some reason is disliked for being a 'boring character'. Come on, not everyone needs emotional baggage! Plus he gave me a bro-hug too.

My fave character is Tali. I don't need to justify it, I just do.

I think it's a little extreme when someone says that "they got a squadmate killed on purpose". Not looking at anyone in particular.

Funny how so many people mentions her voice as a contributing factor to her popularity. To me, her voice is probably the most annoying thing about her.

Am I the only one who finds her voice a turn off?

Well, saying that everyone "discusses" Tali in the Tali thread might be an exaggeration. It unfortunately has a tendency to get derailed rather easily.

But here's my 2 cents, even if this topic has been discussed some half a dozen times already (at least).

First of all, you have to consider that Tali and Garrus are the only two party members who carry over from ME1 to ME2. That there gives them a huge bonus popularity wise because nobody's going to hold ME1 or ME2 against them, fans of either game (and most people are fans of both) aren't going to hate the character on principle the way some people are biased towards one game's characters or the other's.

It also means that the growth in relationship for either character feels more natural than it does in most ME2 romances or even, to an extent, the ME1 romances. It's more of a gradual build-up than a sudden revelation. And, even if you don't romance them, they feel like closer friends than most of the other ME2 non-romanceable characters do, simply because of their history with Shepard.

Secondly, Tali's a well-rounded character. She has strengths and weaknesses. She also isn't as archetypical as, say, Ashley or Liara, who tend to fall into easily defined roles (the female warrior and the hot librarian). Note here that I'm not saying that Ashley or Liara are poorly designed characters. Far from, I think both have hidden depths that people easily overlook. But Tali's unique-ness is more readily apparent: she's a techie, but she's also a warrior. She can be gentle, but she's also got a ruthless edge to her. People like variety in a character.

Thirdly, carrying on with her personality, Tali's got a strong exterior, but a vulnerable interior. Both of these are important, I think. Characters are most interesting if they can carry on for themselves and I get the impression that Tali's very self-sufficient. That being said, she has a vulnerability that she allows Shepard to see, both male and female. I've come to conclude that men really do have a strong protective instinct - we like to feel that we're "protecting" our significant others, even if it's only just in a very minor way. It makes us feel masculine and accomplished. So while Tali is capable of looking after herself, it appeals to our egos that she's willing to accept our help so graciously and that she then thanks us for our help.

Fourthly, I'm not going to deny that part of Tali's appeal is her exotic-ness. Like Liara (as far as I can tell Tali's closest rival as the most popular romance for male!Shep) or Garrus, Tali's an alien. And, to be entirely frank, I think a lot of nerds (and let's not pretend we aren't) are attracted to a degree of otherness they can identify with. Tali's got that in spades, not just as an alien, but as a quarian, a species routinely looked down upon by other species. And, even among her own people, she's something of an outsider. Tied into this is the fact that you never see her face, though I personally put this a bit low on the totem pole of what makes her an interesting character.

Anyhow, that's just what came to mind.

What he said!

Awesome post. I think this is what the cool kids call "win".

I guess I will just be the fanboy who writes an essay where it is not needed or welcomed. But here I go...

Tali is very physically attractive, for one. That's obvious. I reckon about 1/3 of her fanbase likes her for little more than "DeM HiPs". I'm not one of those people.

Her personality and her character is what really captivates people. She is nerdy and shy, but not socially awkward. She's very kind and welcoming, easily likeable by others. Tali doesn't, however, use her "likeability" (not even a word, I think) to promote herself; she is free of arrogance and is humble. You can observe this in her dedication to her people in the Migrant Fleet. She never puts herself ahead of others, but she still values her individuality enough to take care of herself well.

She also REALLY likes your Shepard if you pursue a relationship with her. Tali is, in a sense, obsessed with Shepard (or just madly in love with him), but not to the extent that its creepy. Her loyalty to others and to Shepard is unshakable; you know she will never question you, stab you in your back, or cheat on you. She has a strong lust and desire for Shepard, but not in a ****y or uncontrollably sexual way.

Tali knows how to balance being silly and casual with being serious and focused. She's not overly clingly to your Shepard like so many women are today; she doesn't complain and moan about petty crap and expect you to hold her hand like a small child all the time. Unlike many people, she knows when she needs to take care of herself and when it's okay to fall into someone else's arms.

There is so much more I could say, but I will control myself....for now.Image IPB Some people have mentioned a lot of things on here in ways that I couldn't have ever hoped to, so that's good. Good job.

Why does anyone like Jack?

Why does anyone like Miranda?

Why does anyone like Ash?

Same can be asked about all the ME charcaters, but for some reason people here just ask it about Tail. People like her because they do.

Well, no, not exactly. Sometimes you can't completely describe what you like about someone, but there's always something you can pinpoint.
Some like Jack because she's kind of crazy, but in such a way that's interesting.
Some like Miranda because she's not quite as she seems when you meet her first.
Some like Ashley because she's bold and...er, well, I didn't talk with Ashley much.

I like Joker because he's witty, funny, talented, loyal...I could go on forever.
So what does Tali have that attracts so many?
