THOSE WERE MARVELOUS DAYS.

I guess I'm part of what you guys call the "problem". I love online gaming and don't mind how many games now have both single player and online features. Sure, things still bother me like Bioshock 2's awful, tacked on online gameplay and hackers on online FPS games, but connecting with people around the world is, for me, the ultimate experience.

Seriously, you guys wouldn't think it was awesome if the next DA had online co-op? Or ME3? That would be amazing, if implemented correctly. My brother and I have gamed together since the early days of N64.. now I'm moving away to college. Well thanks to online games, we can still game together. Both of us still dream of the day a GOOD co-op RPG comes out and we'll be the first ones in line to buy it.

So I agree about half-arsed online gameplay but I don't want them to just cut online play out.. I want them to do it right! Sorry old gamer demographic, but online gameplay is definitely the wave of the future.

I'm not old. I just don't think it needs to be in every single game. It's annoying. Not everything needs to be online so you can play with your friends. The thought process of some gamers that this should be so is the issue.

Person 1: Hey, here's a new Mahjong game!
Person 2: Does it have co-op?
Person 1: Well no but...
Person 2: Good day sir.
Person 1: But...
Person 2: I said good day!

MMos fill a a necessary niche. A lot of people genuinely like MMOs or multiplayer games. The problem only comes in when companies start focusing solely on MMOs.

A half decent solid MMO can make much larger profits than a single player game can. First you have the costs to buy the game, sometimes. Then you have the monthly fees. But MMOs are also very competitive, and you can find a private server for pretty much every MMO out there. Short story, MMOs while being a bit riskier have a higher profit if it pays out.

As an old MMORPG player, I have to say I prefer single player games. Yes, MMOs of the games I like could be interesting. But I'd react the same way to it that I would about TOR. I'd rather have the next version of the game as a single player, with indepth plot and storylines.

There's still a lot of amazing games without online though. Batman: Arkham Asylum, Just Cause 2, God of War series, FF series, Fallout 3, just to name some of the more recent, big budget games off the top of my head.

I almost never play online games. I can't stand games that have really short single player game play and the rest is multiplayer online. To me...they should almost be exclusive of each other or make up your mind which one you want to make as a developer.

I know I don't feel compelled in anyway to play Mass Effect or DA:O with other people over a network. The game is fine as is.

I don't like this having to be connected to the internet to play a console game. I mean what if you are playing a game and save it. Then say, your internet goes down and you can't continue the game you were playing because it is linked to online content. This online content can be as simple as freaking achievments. This is ridiculous, stupid, and idiotic.

This has happened to me with DA:O several times....very annoying.  Especially when it can't find DLC items and won't let you load your save game.

I am afraid you might be right about that.

My biggest concerns with games today is that there are developers, producers, and gamers that think every new game needs to have everything that every other game has.  Online is just the easiest one to point a finger at. If a game does not have online people demand it should be patched in or whatever. If it does have online then they tend to demand some other online function. Like if it does not have Co-Op they want Co-Op.
Its not just online. Like I said that is the easiest to point a finger at but if one game has "free play" mode then gamers want that in other games.
It goes further then that. There seems to be a large population out there unable to judge a game on what it is and tries to be but instead  judge it on what it is not and never tried to be. First example to come to mind is DAO. Since it was noted as a "spiritual succesor" to Baldurs Gate many were up set that it was not a duplicate. BG had this this and that. DId things this way and that way. Since DAO was not a clone of BG it is a failure.  I see it as trying to judge a apple on the qualites of a potatoe.
This complaint goes further then gaming but now a days it seems to be more about trying to nickel and dime consumers to death instead of providing a better product then the competitor at a equal or lower price.

Now where do I go for my own personal robot slave?

I really do hate motion control. I am not excited or pleased with any of it. The last thing I want is more motion control games in the future. It will be interesting to see if Natal or PS3(whatever they call it now) motion controllers are successful. I really don't want to wish them failure, but I do not want to see motion control games prove (further) to be a marketable demographic

Motion control is not the video game future I want.

ahhh... I miss the old "3 lives 3 continues" kinds of games... No saves, no cheats, no passwords. Just you, the game, a bag of chips and a bottle of soda.

Aside from no plans on a Homeworld 3 game... ya I agree.

I also have a problem with those gamers/game makers that think graphics is what matters. It is just one persons opinion but games are for enjoyment so a fun game trumps any super awesome shiny pictures.

Though, gotta say that Dawn of War 2 is a game where the graphics are definitely fun.  Watching a hundred orcs blow up into a million giblets and dreadnoughts plow through walls is always great.  Though, it wouldn't be if the isometric tactical squad strategy gameplay wasn't so smooth and fun.

I think the real problem is the gaming community.Being in my early 30's, i don't see many people my age or a bit younger playing.Which means the majority of the gamers are teenagers(more or less) who want awsome graphics and online play to compete with others, for the feeling of superiority it gives them.I'm Greek btw, so i've on;y seen this here, but after 4 years of WoW and 2 years AoC, o got the impression it is a world wide phainomenon. And of course since thses are the majority of those who pay for games they get what they want.

It's worse than that, the future is going to have FULL BODY gesture controls. That just looks so horrible. Why would I want to point my finger at the screen and make the "pew pew" motion in order to play a game?

Full body controls are pointless until we build holodecks.

As long as things don't get like the movie Gamer. Good grief that was a horrid look at gaming in general but scarily accurate to a point.

Yeah, I dunno who that movie was targeting. I mean most gamers think it'd dumb as hell and, to a certain degree, makes us look bad.

But the people who think of gaming as an abberant culture and are afraid of it won't understand the terms and thinly veiled satire.

It is not that those players are out there but it is that they tend to group up and keep to themselves. Maturity is not in age but in the head.
I played WoW at release and we ended up grouping together or had a close relationship to those few other guilds. Our ages spread from 14 year olds to the guild leader that was in his 50's. I think our record of clearing all the old content first should speak for itself. No we did not put 50 hours a week into raiding. Maybe 10 into new content and then it was a "who ever wants to go do the old stuff get together and do it on your own time" type of thing.
It never felt like work for me. We had fun doing it. I think it was because we all had the mindset that you had 19/39 other people there and we wanted to get it done not waste each others time.

Wait so I am the only person that walks around town doing that? Hmmmmm no wonder i get the odd looks and stares.

Forget full body motion games.. developers of the future will just embed games into real life. Like, in order to have breakfast I have to fight computer generated ninjas on my way to the table.

Now if God would just give us the source code to real life...
