But that's the beauty of optional DLC.

You know what's even more beautiful?

Abandoning the concept of "DLC" entirely, opening up a meaningful dialogue with the community, and giving fans substantial, timely updates to the games they have purchased, ones which don't cause more trouble than they solve.

I am also in favor of completely abandoning these micro-additions to the game. DLC is, has been, and will continue to be an idea that functions completely at the expense and loss of the gamer.

Replace "DLC" with "US Postal Service" and "gamer" with "taxpayer" and you might be on to something. Posted Image

I love how this was sold. It was clear from the marketing materials what it was they were selling so we could decide whether we wanted to buy it.

I certainly didn't want to buy it, so I didn't buy it.

I do not, however, see how this content harms the people who don't buy it, so I have no reason at all to object to its availability.

If it continues to be successful, this type of produt will continue to be made, instead of allocating resources elsewhere. We see less product that we find worth while as a result of this kind of thing selling. That's how it harms us.

Personally I'm not buying any DLC of any kind until Bioware actually patches Awakenings. It's not like DA:O was 100% stable before DA:A, but ever since I've installed the expansion (and nothing else), the game frequently crashes. From what I see on the forums, I'm not the only one with that problem.

As for this DLC... I don't see the point of it, so I didn't buy it. I wish they spent more time on actual content than this, but more power to everyone who enjoys stuff like this. Claiming content like this harms anyone is just ridiculous. They even advertised what it did, which is a nice surprise after the hype they made with other stuff, like DA:A, etc.

Only if its made at the expense of something else you'd want, and I don't see that happening.

The development of these DLC are funded by the sale of these DLC.  The development of the products you like are funded by their sale.

So, if you're simply becoming a niche market, yes, you'll see fewer products made that cater to you, but you can't blame other people for buying things they enjoy.

completely neutering the best part of the game, IMO.

I disagree about the approval rating being the "best part of the game" and I would also suggest that you really don't feel that way at all.  Maybe the characters, story and their interactions are IYO the best part of the game, but the approval system?  No

According to who?  Bioware has been doing DLC for a long time, and winning awards for it and making bank.

Replace "US Postal Service" with "Multi-National Military-Industrial Complex" and "taxpayer" with "earthling" and you nailed it!

I bought it because it was a slow week (month/year) on the PSN and $3 is not even enough money to buy lunch.

No, but I can try to convince them of the virtue of not buying it. And counteract the proliferation of backwards thinking that pretends to make sense, like the post just above this.

Because obviously a sandwich or a coffee is just like a video game.

I got it because I've already finished the game five times. Maybe more, I stopped counting. Also, the idea of giving Morrigan a stuffed Alistair toy was too good to resist.

I also buy fountain pens and expensive French writing paper.

Wasting my money is something I have a really good grasp of.

FeastDay DLC = Horsie Armor.

For April 1 Bioware should've put up a free Horse Armor DLC and made a big to-do about how they don't charge their customers for Horse Armor DLC unlike some folks.  And sure enough, Bodahn Feddic would have a nice assortment of horse armors of various materials in stock, with all sorts of fanciful descriptions and interesting stats and "Restriction: Horse" to drive the point home.

And then wait and see how long it was before someone pointed out that the game doesn't have horses.

King Cailan: "I'd hoped for a war like in the tales! A king riding with the fabled Grey Wardens against a tainted god!"

Riding what, good King Cailan?  Riding what?

You sir are a genious!  I almost choked on my soda when I read your post.

Well, let's frame this matter in a different conceptual way.

What if there were DlC that we would consider worthwhile, and DlC that we consider a waste of time?

(BTW, in another posting, I offered my criteria for what I consider "worthwhile".)

Perhaps we might encourage Bioware to make the kind of DlC we want by buying it, and not making the kind of DlC we consider crap by not buying it, and I guess if we really want influence, we'd try and influence others like this thread is trying to do.

I suppose.

As I've stated, I've liked all DlC up until this point. That includes Blood Dragon Armor, but I never would have paid for it. I accepted it because it was free.

FeastDay DlC is the first DlC I've seen for DA from Bioware that makes me think of Horsie Armor (and no I've never played Oblivion etc. games, but I guess I know what other people have written about that particular ... trinket.)

I even liked Return to Ostagar. I guess people didn't like the delays regarding it, but other than that I found nothing about it to dislike, particularly.

If bioware had implemented voice-free cut-scenes for those gifts/pranks I'd call it fan service.

If they were fully voiced cut-scenes I'd call it awesome.

As it stands for PC users(mods) it's a rip off imo.

I tihnk it's really up to each individual to determine if it's a waste of money or not. I've seen posts by people that thought it was well worth the 3 bucks. Personally, the concept didn't appeal to me, so I didn't opt to buy it.

It's kinda odd when something that is meant to be a gift to help celebrate an anniversary costs the recipient. Call it what it was, a way to make money with a new attempt at microtransactions. Simple math, roughly 3 million units (DA:O) sold worldwide, if only 10% of those customers bought it, BW/EA makes roughly $900,000.  Which is fine, they need to make payroll somehow, just call it what it is.

Added: I adjusted my math, darn typos lol

This.
And as strange as it sounds, I purchased it because of two reasons - first, I'd like to have a complete game, and second, since I enjoyed DAO as well as DAA (the later had obvious flaws, but still..) it's my "donation" to BW.

By that logic, I'm harmed because God of War was published.
