I don't plan on watching another anime unless it's either really good or related to one of the above five series, which means I'll have to do with the second seasons of Haruhi and Clannad. I read that Code Geass is getting a third season, and I will probably rewatch the first two.

i personally prefer to ride in the time machine and read the mangas, of which i keep up on 5 (bleach naruto fairy tale air gear, and another...) (i know, very mainstream)

Seagloom! You stole my list!
.....awesome list by the way.
Actually, I'm surprised no one has mentioned this one and it probably is my favorite so....
Fushigi Yugi!
.......can't believe I listed a romance series.
If it's any consolation most of those anime were shown here on TV, so I'm not surprised our lists were similar.
Fushigi Yugi was okay but not a series I stuck with until the end. I eventually lost interest. That has nothing to do with it being shoujo though. I don't enjoy shoujo as much as shonen and seinen but I do lose interest if it feels like a story is being dragged on... and on... and *on*...
That's another reason I prefer manga to anime. Anime has a tendency to throw in ridiculous amounts of filler material in any series that runs longer than two volumes. It's why I can't stand say, Naruto in anime form but find it decent for what it is in manga form. Of course some series are just ridiculously long, period. Fushigi Yugi was one of those. Inuyasha is another. (Someone mentioned it earlier, which is why I bring it up.) Maybe it starts off great, lays down plots threads, piques my interest... all that good stuff. But if the writers take too long finishing what they started, I stop caring. The exception is if a story is just too dense and packed with so many characters that all plot threads can't possible be resolved in a short period.

But I can't say I ever got into animé on a huge scale. Can be damn expensive to get in England, plus a lot of it doesn't appeal to me.

I liked the two GitS films, actually. I've seen some Studio... uh... Who did.. Ah yes! Studio Ghibli stuff. I liked "My Neighbour Totoro". And I really liked some of various Transformers series!

Part of the reason i stoped buying them, cause of the cost with me living in england, plus alot of the newer anime was getting to be too daft.

Hellsing was odd for me in that I got 3/4 of it on DVD, and I really don't care much for vampires. I think it's just the quality of the story, because it really was quite enjoyable. I'm now thinking about trying to acquire the DVDs all over again.

Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, and Spirited Away were all great movies. That studio has put out many other movies too. Miyazaki Hayao is one very talented man. You just don't see much old school animation on bigger budget productions anymore. CG has crept into everything. I suppose it's only a matter of time before it seeps into those movies too. If it hasn't already, but at least I have good memories...
Anime can be damn expensive everywhere, by the way. It's easy to plunk down hundreds of dollars on two or three series.

Does that ever come to an end?
I really despise series that just get cut off and by you mentioning that it brought up memories long forgotten of that particular series and how I looked for a complete collection of it way back when but never fond it.

Yes, the OVA comes to a definitive end. I wonder if you're thinking of the TV series? That one goes on forever and is very disappointing when compared to the original.

Aha! Steel Moon mentioned Gunsmith Cats! I never got to see all three OVAs. I only own the first two on VHS. The manga stories are personal favorites though. It's one of the few series that made guns interesting to me. I also liked that it took place primarily in the US. A rare thing for anime/manga.
Agreed that it taking place in the US made it seem special. The guns were pretty cool, but actually I like Rally's car. The GT350 is my dream car. Did you see the episode with the car chase? Awesome.

There was some other one from that time I remember now but cannot remember the name. Weird mushroom type buildings, a female bounty hunter, futuristic, and they were big on these shields that formed up like crystals.
There was a silly live action movie too. Was on scifi channel. I think it was saturday mornings after MST3000k during scifis anime hours.

I've never been much of a gun or car fan, but Gunsmith Cats made both look cool. Yep, I saw the car chase. That was in the second part... when they were chasing the russian speaking woman who always wore those shades. Easily the best car chase I've seen in anime. Hell, few anime even include car chases. I especially loved those brief perspective camera shots that put me into the scene. Remembering it now, her car was made a lot cooler in the OVA than manga for that scene alone.
In the manga there was a strong emphasis on guns to the point many of them had their history, strength and weaknesses explained. It was clear the creator had a passion for firearms. It was just infectious. That and the drawings were so detailed.

I dislike dubbed anime. I prefer watching it subtitled. North American dubbing is usually contrived and silly.
But then, I've been watching subtitled movies all my life.
Dubs are usually not very good to eh (the worst is when they pretend it's actually America; I just can't watch Case Closed for this reason, though I love the manga), but I will defend the Cowboy Bebop dub to the death. Spike just isn't Spike without Steve Blum.
My favorites are Cowboy Bebop, Gurren Lagann, Outlaw Star, FLCL...probably more, but those are the ones I'll just sit down and watch just to enjoy them. I was pretty excited when I randomly encountered Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim the other night (Pierrot le Fou, hell yeah). Sadly, the anime adaptation of one of my favorite game series was pretty horrible (Persona 3 to Trinity Blood).
Used to watch Inuyasha, Fushigi Yugi, that kinda stuff, but it really wore thin when even filler stuff that accomplished nothing would be extended to two-three episodes. Drove me nuts. I still have a soft spot in my heart for Sailor Moon, though.

For recommending anyone watch Perfect Blue, I think you're the one who needs to be destroyed.Stanley Woo wrote...
I WILL DESTROY YOU!
No, I won't. Everyone's got their own tastes, even if they are misguided and TOTALLY, COMPLETELY WRONG!I kid, I kid.
I'm also a huge fan of Satoshi Kon's work. He's like the Terry Gilliam of anime, with weird, messed-up dreamscape-like concepts in his stuff. Don't believe me? Check out Paprika or Millennium Actress. Or, for something way more disturbing, Perfect Blue.
Seriously, I've had a copy of it for years, I've watched it once, and I don't even want to touch the case anymore. Perfect Blue is the most f'ed up thing I've ever seen.
