Also, I think it's a bit of a cop out game design-wise to have an ability (charge) that's there specifically to compensate for the artificially crippled range of the shotguns.  It would be better just to give shotguns better range in the first place so you don't have to be point blank to use them effectively.

I think part of the reason for the short range on shotguns is because a number of enemies use them and if the range on their shotguns was greater they would be really overpowering since the shotguns are a lot more powerful in ME2 than they were in ME1.  If for example the enemies were wielding Eviscerator shotties instead of Katana shotties even that minor increase in range would mean they could kill you in one or two shots as soon as they got into close range.

I personally find the Eviscerator to have all the range I need on a shotgun since I only use my shotgun at very close range anyway.  That said, a shotgun with reduced damage; but much greater range would be a nice addition to the game particulary for your squad.  Maybe something like a shotgun firing a single slug as opposed to shot, I'm thinking something with accuracy on par with the Carnifex; but with a much lower rate of fire and a lot more damage.

in me1 the shotguns were beastly later on

Having one button for cover AND sprint is even worse than the lack of weapon hotkeys. The unnecessarily gimped PC controls are SOOOO annoying. Seriously Bioware, you got this right the first time around. Why would you REMOVE features from your perfect ME1 port?

on Xbox 360:
press a to take cover
hold a to sprint

How exactly does the class which requires precise aiming "play itself for you" more than the class that essentially entails press Y, pull right trigger, press B (if necessary), run away, repeat process?  The Vanguard is fun; but its hardly demanding of your intellect or your aim.

It's funny how everyone always says that, but when someone points that with Shockwave, Pull and Reave/Energy Drain the Vanguard is also capable of pretty tactical power usage AND charging, along come people who insist that 'if you're not charging whenever you see an enemy, you're doing it wrong.'

I'd recommend Vanguard because it's a complete game changer. Sentinels for example may be more powerful and easier to play but being a Vanguard simply allows you to experience the most fun and dynamic gameplay this game has to offer.

I kinda remember ME1 having no cover button, essentially making Shepard stick to cover whenever he could and causing some pretty idiotic deaths. Regardless, if you can't get used to it after playing for half an hour, you're doing something wrong.

Dynamic Entry!:P

Seriously though...when I try to sprint I occasionally cover by accident. It is absolutely ludicrous to have it be the same button.

Come on, PC's and console controllers have a lot more versatility than this game offers for controls.

It's as streamlined (dummied down) as it can be.

Uh huh ... do everything buttons are horrendously annoying.

Heck, I activated cloak this one time and wanted to sprint, but instead started a conversation with Kal Reegar.

I was like wtf.

Isn't the Soldier also a "press Y, pull right trigger, press B (if necessary), run away, repeat process" class?

Depends on the Weapon you're using, which gives it a bit more variety than the Vanguard which is really all about the shotgun.   The Vanguard is fun; but if you're not charging in and shotgun blasting people you're handicapped.

When a Soldier is using a shotgun, you have to make a push to get in close since you don't have charge or let your enemies come to you, then you "press Y, pull right trigger, press B (if necessary), run away, repeat process".

With an assault rifle. pistol or the Viper you aim, press y, pull right trigger till they drop, return to cover, repeat process.

And with the Widow or Mantis sniper rifle you aim, press y, pull right trigger, return to cover, repeat process.

Playing a shotgun soldier is a very different experience. You don't have an easy way to bypass obstacles like the vanguard, so it's all about carefully observing the layout of the battlefield and timing your adrenaline rushes so that you get maximum benefit from the damage and speed boosts.
Fights are much more unpredictable, and I find myself looking at the radar and looking for potential flanking opportunities a lot more when using the eviscerator.

FYI imploding goat...Vanguards can get sniper ability in Collector ship, so can snipe after that mission (except never gets Widow, which I totally agree is "super wicked"). Also, Vanguard with Arc projector, AWESOME - so not always 'handicapped" by up close and personal, imo

Soldier all the way, all weapon from the start, plus the useful ammo.

I always believe a soldier to be a true warrior leader, the rest are just followers.

No offense tended

I've been playing a vanguard on insanity lately, and I have to say that even though I die a lot, it's still ridiculously fun to charge around the battlefield, picking off people that split apart from their group, and blowing people off ledges. It feels like I'm playing a completely different game. On every other class, I would sit in cover, use some abilities, but would generally be at the mercy of my ridiculously powerful enemies. Now I'm running in and flattening them.

But both classes are fun. The soldier has more toys, and that is certainly appealing.

This is exactly why the decision becomes about your playstyle. Both classes do most of their work through weapon damage. The difference comes down to this: Do you prefer a defensive style of gun fighting (soldier) or an aggressive style of gun fighting (vanguard)? Now the soldier can play aggressively too but the difference is in charge, because it allows the vanguard to get close with his enemies faster than any other class. The sodier has the assault rifle and the sniper rifle, so it is not imperative for him to get into close quarters with his enemies in order to be effective. The soldier is the king of attrition in that he can win prolonged combats at any range, but the vanguard is the the tactical fighter, using surgical strikes to eliminate isolated enemies and create pincer siuations on enemies for his allies to take advantage of.

To me, the soldier is the safest class to play, as you'll suffer less from mistakes or diverting from your mian strategies. The vanguard has to move tactically, so it requires more precise gameplay, but it is by far more fun in my opinion.

I couldn't agree more. I just started playing the Vanguard class last night and it's a blast! I died a lot as well, but I was just so eager to charge and see what kind of trouble I could get myself into that I couldn't help myself. Image IPB

I like them both. Go soldier if you want a reliable experience. The game will basically play like any third person shooter this way. Adrenaline rush tips the scales in your favor, if you're someone who enjoys taking cover and systematically offing the bad guys soldier will do you just fine.

Vanguard is a much more tactical play style. To get the most out of it you'll have to utilize charge to get up close and blast away with your shottys. It takes a bit more finesse than the soldier (deciding who to charge and when, what cover you will move to after you charge etc.) It's extremely fun and charge is a pretty unique ability that can produce some humorous results.
