I'm a strict vegan but even if I wanted to get fresh dairy I could as I live in a rural community with family farms.  I shop at the farmer's market for my produce when it is open and Whole Foods Gorcery during the fall and winter(more expensive but still high quality organic foods).

Yes, but not everyone can afford to eat organic and fresh.

Junk foods and processed foods cost less then fresh foods and organic.

Well, it´s more a matter of organization and logistics than money very often times. Sure, getting all organic is expensive, but there is also a middle ground where you can get pretty decent real food and not pay a terrible amount of money; the trick is cooking.

In fact, the huge problem is cooking. When you work like a mule for a ton hours you don´t have the time nor the will to cook something nice. I have forced myself to eat by my own hand over the years and now, cooking is not an issue. That´s why I´m not worried with health issues since I know for sure what I´m putting in my stew. =]

Chef Boyardee used to just be disgusting garbage, now it's hilarious garbage.

Actually it used to be great homemade hand canned stuff... and then it was turned into garbage.

Really? You get your milk and cream straight off the farm?

I used to pick up raw milk and butter from an Amish farm in Lancaster. Not entirely fresh(it's delivered in coolers to areas near me), and the butter was frozen, but damn it's the best.

I agree,my health is worth the extra cost.

Agreed. And if you're smart or lucky, the difference in cost is negligible or none.

Having a half Mexican, half Puertorrican previous roomate combined with a year in a "student koljoz" in Norway helps you discovering how can you eat tasty, healthy and cheap. =]

You should have seen how fun it was to see a group of Japanese ladies eating traditional Castilian garlick soup. :P

true enough but how many waste their government check or hard earned money on alcohol or drugs? Some are condemned to that life and for those I feel sorrow, those that squander what little they have I've no sorrow for.

I never said anything about government checks. I said lower class. Some people in the lower class work hard for the little amount of money they make with no assistance from the government.

*Rises hands* Like us, international grad students.

Someone should write a disertation about us, who still resist with less than what a pizza delivery guy makes.

I was never a grad student but I was on the "kicked out when I was 18 and homeless" diet.  Let me tell you that is a damned good diet.  Maybe that is why the MRE's tasted so good when I enlisted.

I was a "citizen" guess what? I got nothing other then a free meal from the soup kitchens that were run by religious institutions.

I was an 18 year old white male who was not a father, no drug problems, no alcohol problems, not crazy enough, and because I was working was no eligible for ANY kind of help.
I made note of mentioning the "white" part because it was confirmed by a good friends mother who was a supervisor at that social assistance site and several "minorities"  (A black and latino that were no different then I other then the color of their skin) that I shared a room with at the shelter that it was a affirmative action thing. They had a qouta of minorities that had to "help" and since I was not one I got nothing.
Sorry to rant. It is just one of those things close to my heart. That point in life you learn that life is bs. After a few months of working 80+ hour weeks and seeing that I would never get anywhere with that I made the choice to enlist.
I figured at that point a person in position had to put his life on the table and roll the dice to get any help at all at making a better life for himself... that was spring of 2001.

P.S.
I am still waiting on that can Ashedman.

This is fake you people are stupid. The rat is not even cooked... I'v seen rats cooked before and they are not that color, that is the color of a rat they killed and stuffed in the can.

Are YOU stupid?  Obviously a cooked rat is going to be properly PREPARED (IE. shaved, gutted, etc), and the ravioli is cooked in a different process, the rat probably got caught during the packaging process (ie. POST-cooking) so it was never cooked only smashed and crushed into the can by the machine.

Cans are heated up after they're fully packaged. So no, it's not a stupid assumption.

Why do you think canned veggies are generally so overcooked? It's due to the canning process itself.
